Narendra Modi’s suit sold at auction in Surat, India, on 20 February 2015 for Rs 43,131,311. Guinness World Records lists it in the category “Most expensive suit (clothing) sold at auction”; the listed buyer was Laljibhai Tulsibai Patel, and Guinness says the proceeds went to the Namami Gange Fund.
What record did the suit set?
Guinness World Records uses the precise category “Most expensive suit (clothing) sold at auction.” That is narrower than saying it was the most expensive item of clothing ever sold: the listing concerns a suit sold at auction. Guinness’s page records the 2015 sale, but it notes that records can change and that updates may not appear online immediately, so the careful wording is that Guinness lists this sale as the record.
How much did it sell for?
Guinness gives the sale price as Rs 43,131,311, with its page displaying equivalents of £448,944 and $693,174. The rupee figure is the auction amount; the pound and dollar amounts are Guinness’s conversions, not separate payments made in those currencies. Contemporary news reports described the price as about Rs 4.31 crore and published different dollar conversions, reflecting exchange rates or dates used in those reports. Guinness World Records’ record page is the source for the listed amount and its conversions.
Who bought it, and where did the proceeds go?
Guinness names Surat, Gujarat, India, as the location and Laljibhai Tulsibai Patel as the buyer. Guinness says the proceeds went to the Namami Gange Fund, a project to clean the Ganges. Contemporary reporting described the auction as supporting the Clean Ganga mission; the stated destination should not be confused with an independent audit of how much the fund ultimately received. The Indian Express’s 2016 account also reports the record entry and the buyer’s family’s submission of auction materials to Guinness.

The Indian Express described it as a navy blue pinstripe bandhgala with “Narendra Damodardas Modi” woven or embroidered into the stripes. The Tribune reported that Modi wore it on 25 January 2015 for summit talks with U.S. President Barack Obama in New Delhi. The Tribune’s report places the wearing date before the February auction.

- 20 February 2015: The sale closed in Surat. Guinness gives this as the auction date; Indian Express/PTI reported the suit sold for Rs 4.31 crore. The 2015 Indian Express/PTI report covers the sale.
- 21 August 2016: The Indian Express reported that Guinness had entered the sale as a record. Its account says the buyer and his son sent documentation including the cheque, auction register, photographs and video; that is the newspaper’s description of their application, not a published Guinness audit report.
What is known about the suit’s origin?
The auction record establishes the sale and buyer, not how the suit came into Modi’s possession. The Indian Express reported that businessman Ramesh Virani said he had gifted the suit to Modi. That is an attributed claim rather than a fact independently established by the Guinness record listing.
