Macaulay Culkin was reportedly paid about $250,000 for the 1990 original Home Alone, according to contemporary Los Angeles Times reports. The frequently repeated $4.5 million figure belongs to the 1992 sequel, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, and its reported terms were never confirmed as stated.

What was Culkin paid for the original Home Alone?

In May 1991, the Los Angeles Times reported that Culkin had been paid $250,000 for the original film. A November 1992 Los Angeles Times interview likewise described his pay for the movie as about $250,000. These are contemporary reports, not a copy of his contract or a verified payment record. Los Angeles Times, May 1991; Los Angeles Times, November 1992.

Some later coverage has put the original salary lower, including at $100,000. The available reporting cited here does not establish the executed contract amount or explain the difference. The most defensible answer is therefore about $250,000 as the best-supported contemporary reported figure—not an audited exact amount.

Why is $4.5 million often associated with Home Alone?

That figure refers to Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, not the 1990 original. In May 1991, the Los Angeles Times reported that Culkin’s sequel deal was said to be worth $4.5 million plus 5% of the film’s gross. The article also said the terms had not been confirmed; a Fox spokeswoman said the signed deal was “but not exactly for those terms.” A November 1992 Los Angeles Times interview continued to describe the $4.5 million-plus-profits figure as reported. The reported sequel figure should not be added to the original-film salary as though it were the amount Culkin earned from the first Home Alone. Nor does the reported deal by itself establish what he ultimately received.

What did Culkin later say about sequel participation?

In a 2025 interview recap, Culkin was quoted recalling, “I think I own five percent of the net. I also 15 percent of the merchandising.” He was discussing the sequel arrangement. This later recollection is distinct from the 1991 report of 5% of gross: net profits, gross receipts, and merchandising participation are different terms, and neither statement verifies the amount ultimately paid. What the available figures do—and do not—show

  • Original film: about $250,000, as reported by the Los Angeles Times in 1991 and 1992.
  • Sequel: $4.5 million plus a reported 5% of gross, with the 1991 report explicitly noting that the deal was not confirmed as stated.
  • Later recollection: Culkin said he thought he had 5% of net and 15% of merchandising for the sequel; that does not document his final receipts.

These figures are about reported compensation and deal terms. They do not establish Culkin’s net worth, lifetime earnings from the films, continuing residual income, or an exact amount deposited for the original.
