Guinness World Records says the price comprised $4 million cash plus a PSA Grade 9 Pikachu Illustrator valued at $1.275 million. Paul later sold the card at auction for $16.492 million, including buyer’s premium, in February 2026.
What card did Logan Paul buy?
The record-setting purchase was a Pikachu Illustrator card. The Charizard wording in the question is a mix-up: the $5.275 million figure is not the price of a Charizard. Guinness World Records identifies the card as a PSA Grade 10 Pikachu Illustrator, and the Associated Press also identifies Paul’s card as Pikachu Illustrator.
Guinness says the transaction took place in Dubai on 22 July 2021. Its record page describes the card as the only known PSA Gem Mint 10 copy.
How was the $5.275 million purchase paid?
The headline amount combined cash and another card, rather than being an all-cash payment:

- Total reported transaction value: $5,275,000
This breakdown is reported by Guinness World Records. The $1.275 million component was the stated value of the traded card, not additional cash.
What happened when Paul sold the card?
Guinness World Records records Paul’s later Goldin Auctions sale at $16.492 million on 16 February 2026. That record total includes the buyer’s premium. The Associated Press reported the result as $16.5 million, a rounded figure, and said the auction lasted 41 days.

The purchase and auction figures describe different transactions: the first included cash and a traded card, while the auction figure includes buyer’s premium. They should not be treated as a simple profit calculation; fees, other costs, and the value assigned to the traded card affect any estimate of Paul’s net gain. Guinness’s auction record page gives the precise total and its qualification: most expensive Pokémon card sold at auction.

The Pikachu Illustrator was created for a 1998 illustration contest. The Associated Press reported that it was designed by Atsuko Nishida. Guinness’s record coverage describes the card as an exceptionally scarce promotional card; its high-grade condition and rarity help explain why it drew such an extraordinary auction result.

In a 2022 Guinness article, Paul said: “Only 39 were given out to Illustration contest winners in 1998, and this was a purchase for the only one in the world that has been graded a perfect "10."” That is a historical statement attributed to Paul at the time, not a new comment. Guinness’s later record page continues to describe the card as the only known PSA Gem Mint 10 copy. See Guinness World Records’ 2022 coverage.
