The administrators’ reported value of James Bord’s proposed Sheffield Wednesday takeover was £47.8 million. Bord’s consortium withdrew on 25 February 2026, saying due diligence showed that the offer could no longer be justified given the club’s condition and history. The exact findings remain private, and reports differ on how much the agreement allowed the consortium to renegotiate.
How much was James Bord’s Sheffield Wednesday bid?
The joint administrators’ reported figure for the preferred bidder’s offer was £47.8 million, according to BBC Sport and Sky Sports. The administrators selected the James Bord-led consortium as preferred bidder on 24 December 2025. It comprised Bord, Felix Romer and Alsharif Faisal Bin Jamil.
There is a separate figure in The Guardian’s reporting: based on sources, it described the bid as around £40 million, while noting that £32.5 million had also been reported at the time. That estimate is not the same as the £47.8 million value attributed to the administrators by BBC Sport and Sky Sports; the available accounts do not reconcile the difference.
Why did Bord’s consortium withdraw?
On 25 February 2026, the consortium said a lengthy due-diligence process had changed its assessment of the offer. BBC Sport reported its statement: “The historic mishandling of the club and pattern of catastrophic underinvestment means our sizeable binding bid can no longer be justified.” This is the consortium’s explanation, not an independently published finding about the club’s finances or facilities.

BBC Sport reported that the club’s valuation was then considered lower than the £47.8 million offer. The consortium said the agreement did not allow it to renegotiate the bid downward. Sky Sports, however, relayed claims from sources that there might have been room to renegotiate. The accounts therefore differ on that point, and the agreement itself has not been made public in the cited coverage.
Was stadium maintenance the issue?
Sky Sports reported that stadium maintenance needs were thought to be a key reason for the withdrawal. That is an outlet-reported explanation; the public reporting cited here does not establish maintenance as the sole or decisive cause, nor disclose the technical findings of the due-diligence review.

What money had the consortium already paid or spent?
- £2.5 million deposit: BBC Sport reported that the consortium paid this non-refundable deposit when it was chosen as preferred bidder.
- More than £4 million in total support and costs: The consortium said it had spent more than this over the preceding two months, including the deposit and support for club operations, as reported by BBC Sport and Sky Sports. This is the consortium’s reported figure, not an independently audited total.
The Guardian also quoted a consortium spokesperson saying: “The figure we offered is significantly higher than that justified by the findings of a lengthy due diligence process.” The underlying review has not been publicly detailed in the cited accounts.

On 10 March 2026, Sheffield Wednesday announced that Arise Capital Partners LLC had been selected as the new preferred bidder. The club said Arise had provided a substantial deposit and evidence of funds, and that its offer would not deliver the same creditor return as the previous proposed transaction. The announcement establishes Arise’s preferred-bidder status on that date; it does not establish that a takeover was subsequently completed.
