How much did Jack get for the clock?
In the series’ 1884 storyline, Jack Trotter and Larry Russell reportedly sell the patent for Jack’s alarm-clock invention for $600,000 total and split the money evenly. Jack receives $300,000; Larry receives the other $300,000. ARY News reported those figures in 2025.
So, Jack does not personally get the full $600,000. That is the reported sale price for the two partners together.
What would Jack’s share be in today’s dollars?
Using a 2025 consumer-price comparison, Jack’s $300,000 share works out to about $9.87 million. This is a proportional inference: it halves the approximately $19.75 million estimate reported for the combined $600,000 sale, rather than relying on a separately published conversion for Jack alone.

Published estimates for the combined 1884 sale differ. ARY News reported a fan CPI-style estimate of $19,748,632.65 in 2025 dollars and also cited an HBO social-media estimate of $21,195,495.51. EntertainmentNow reported an estimate of about $19.75 million, citing the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics inflation calculator while noting its limitation for an 1884 amount. These are estimates published in 2025, not exact 2026 values or a single agreed conversion.
What the inflation comparison does—and doesn’t—tell you
A consumer-price adjustment gives a sense of how an amount compares with the cost of consumer goods and services. It does not show precisely how Jack’s fortune would compare with a modern person’s income, household budget, or place in the economy.

There is an additional historical limitation: MeasuringWorth explains that the official U.S. CPI series begins in 1913; earlier historical CPI observations are reconstructed. It also offers several ways to compare historical values, because different measures answer different questions. That is why the published 2025 estimates are best treated as ballpark purchasing-power comparisons, not a definitive statement of how rich Jack would be today.
