There is no publicly available, consistently defined budget ledger for all eight seasons of Game of Thrones. The clearest reported figures are about $6 million per episode for season 1, $100 million for season 6, and about $15 million per episode—or $90 million across six episodes—for season 8. Other public numbers cover a single episode or production spending in Northern Ireland, not a whole season.
Reported budget figures by season
The figures below are not a like-for-like accounting: some describe an episode, some a season, and some spending in one region. Where a comparable season total has not been established in the cited sources, the table says so rather than estimating one from episode counts.
| Season | Publicly reported figure | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | About $6 million per episode | A later estimate attributed to HBO executive Francesca Orsi’s remarks; it is not a disclosed season total. Westeros.org |
| 2 | $8 million for “Blackwater” | An episode-specific reported cost. The Los Angeles Times said episodes at the time had an allocation of about $6 million; this does not establish the season’s total. Los Angeles Times |
| 3 | No comparable season total established | Reports describe earlier episodes as averaging about $6 million and budgets rising over time, but the cited evidence does not establish a season 3 total. Los Angeles Times; Society of Camera Operators |
| 4 | £23.2 million | Northern Ireland production spend reported for the series, not the worldwide season budget. Northern Ireland Screen |
| 5 | £26.3 million | Northern Ireland production spend reported for the series, not the worldwide season budget. Northern Ireland Screen |
| 6 | $100 million for ten hours; $10 million per episode as a working average | The Los Angeles Times reported the season total in 2016 and noted that individual episodes did not all cost the same. Los Angeles Times |
| 7 | Estimated £20 million | Northern Ireland regional production spend, not a worldwide season total. Northern Ireland Screen |
| 8 | About $15 million per episode; $90 million for six episodes | The per-episode figure was attributed to Orsi’s remarks; FilmLA reported the $90 million six-episode estimate. Neither is an audited HBO ledger. Westeros.org; FilmLA |
Which figures are closest to a season budget?
Season 6: $100 million reported for ten hours
The Los Angeles Times reported in 2016 that season 6 cost $100 million for ten hours, making $10 million a working average per episode. The same report emphasized that the budget was allocated unevenly: some episodes cost more, others less. The $100 million report is the clearest season-wide figure in the sources cited here.
There is a conflicting estimate: a Society of Camera Operators feature described costs rising from about $40 million for season 1 to a reported $165 million for season 6. The available reporting does not reconcile the difference in scope or accounting. The figures should not be combined or treated as equivalent; the contemporaneous $100 million Los Angeles Times report is the stronger headline figure.

Season 8: $15 million per episode, or a reported $90 million total
The final season had six episodes. A figure of about $15 million per episode was attributed to HBO executive Francesca Orsi’s remarks, while FilmLA’s 2018 television report listed $90 million for the season at that rate. The multiplication is consistent—six episodes times $15 million—but the reported estimate is not a public, audited HBO accounting.
Why public budget numbers do not line up
“Budget” can mean a per-episode average, a complete season’s production budget, the cost of one unusually large episode, or spending within a particular location. Those measures answer different questions:
Rank #2
- Episode figures identify a reported cost or average for an hour of television, not necessarily a season total.
- Season totals cover a season’s reported production budget, but episode-level spending can vary within that total.
- Regional production spending measures activity in a place, not the full cost of producing the season worldwide.
Northern Ireland Screen’s figures for seasons 4, 5, and 7 are regional spend entries. They cannot be compared directly with the season-wide U.S.-dollar figures reported for seasons 6 and 8, nor do they establish the full budget for those seasons.
Why some episodes cost more
Large battles and other demanding sequences could use more of a season’s resources than routine episodes. The Los Angeles Times reported that season 2’s “Blackwater” cost $8 million against an approximate $6 million episode allocation at the time. Showrunners David Benioff and D. B. Weiss described budget growth as gradual, saying, “There’s never a blank check policy.” They also said they abandoned a planned season 1 battle because “those are three shooting days we can’t afford.” Society of Camera Operators

What can—and cannot—be concluded
The public reporting supports useful benchmarks, not a complete eight-season cost ledger. Season 6 has a reported $100 million total; season 8 is commonly represented by the reported $15 million-per-episode estimate and FilmLA’s $90 million figure. For seasons 1–5 and 7, the cited sources do not establish a consistently scoped worldwide season total. That does not prove internal figures do not exist; it means they are not established by these public reports.
