How Much Did Elon Musk Donate to Help Elect Donald Trump?

Musk’s reported support for Trump grew from a December 2024 snapshot of more than $260 million to at least $288 million in a later year-end analysis. The figures cover different dates and measures.

The “more than $260 million” figure was a December 2024 snapshot of Elon Musk’s contributions to political groups that supported Donald Trump. It was not the final cycle-wide total: an analysis of year-end filings later put Musk’s spending to help Trump and other Republican candidates at at least $288 million. Those figures differ in date and scope, so they are not interchangeable.

Where the $260 million-plus figure came from

TechCrunch reported in December 2024 that Musk had donated more than $260 million to groups that helped Trump, using then-current campaign-finance data. The same coverage cited a New York Times figure of about $277 million in donations to federal groups that cycle. Both were contemporaneous estimates, not a single final tally of all Musk’s political spending. TechCrunch’s December 6, 2024 report provides the date and context for the headline figure.

Which groups received Musk’s contributions?

America PAC

America PAC was the main identified recipient. Its FEC Schedule A filing reported Musk’s aggregate contributions to the committee as $238,523,078.25 through November 25, 2024. This is a committee-specific, year-to-date contribution figure through that filing date; it is not the final total across all groups or all later filings. The FEC contribution record shows the reported contributions.

RBG PAC and MAHA Alliance

TechCrunch reported that Musk gave $20.5 million to RBG PAC and $3 million to MAHA Alliance. These are amounts attributed to those committees in the December 2024 reporting, rather than a separate final FEC-wide total for Musk. TechCrunch’s report names both recipients.

Why later reports put the total higher

In January 2025, The Washington Post analyzed year-end FEC filings and reported that Musk spent at least $288 million to help Trump and other Republican candidates. Its account included an $11.2 million in-kind America PAC contribution for petition incentives on December 31, on top of a nearly $40.5 million in-kind contribution reported for the same general purpose on November 25. The broader figure reflects later filings and a wider description of the political support counted; it should not be treated as a revised America PAC cash-donation figure. The Washington Post’s year-end analysis explains its scope.

Figure What it measures Cutoff or publication date

About $277 million Donations to federal groups that cycle, as attributed by TechCrunch to the New York Times Reported in December 2024; not a final cycle-wide figure

Contributions, fundraising and spending are different totals

A donor’s contributions to a committee are not the same as the committee’s total receipts or the amount it spends. The figures reported for America PAC illustrate the difference:

  • The FEC Schedule A filing listed $238.5 million in Musk contributions through November 25, 2024.
  • The Washington Post reported that America PAC raised $263 million, a committee-receipts figure.
  • OpenSecrets estimated that Musk personally contributed about $249.8 million to America PAC and reported that the committee spent $259 million on the 2024 election, more than 90% of it on the presidential race.
  • FactCheck.org’s September 2026 profile said America PAC reported $261.2 million in 2024-cycle spending.

The differing contribution estimates and spending totals reflect different measures, reporting cutoffs and filings. They should not be added together or described as the same amount Musk donated. OpenSecrets’ 2025 annual report and FactCheck.org’s September 2026 profile give their respective figures.

What America PAC did with the money

The Washington Post described America PAC’s work as voter outreach, including canvassing aimed at lower-propensity voters in swing states, as well as incentives connected to petition signers. Musk was quoted in late October 2024 describing a planned recurring incentive as “$1M to someone in swing states who signed our petition to support free speech & the right to bear arms.” The Post later corrected its estimate of 2024 payments tied to petition signatories to at least $51.7 million, replacing an earlier $52.7 million figure. That $51.7 million is a reported payment category, not an additional donation by Musk. The Washington Post’s account describes the campaign activity and correction.

What “super PAC” does—and does not—tell you

The FEC defines a super PAC as an independent-expenditure-only committee that may solicit and accept unlimited contributions from individuals, corporations, labor organizations and other groups. The label describes the committee category; by itself, it does not determine whether a particular action or relationship complied with campaign-finance law. The sources cited here establish reported financial amounts and activity, but do not establish a court or regulator finding resolving the legality of the petition-incentive program. The FEC’s super PAC guidance explains the committee classification.
