Sporting CP disclosed a guaranteed €20 million fee for Viktor Gyökeres, plus up to €4 million in conditional additions. Coventry City also retained a share of profit on a future transfer: originally 15%, later reduced to 10% under terms Sporting said had been triggered.
How much did Coventry sell Viktor Gyökeres for?
Sporting Clube de Portugal’s 13 July 2023 regulatory filing put the agreed amount for Gyökeres’s sporting rights at €20 million. It also provided for up to €4 million in additions, dependent on individual and collective objectives. How much could Coventry get in bonuses?
The additions were tied to the achievement of objectives, rather than being part of the guaranteed €20 million. Sporting’s filing establishes the maximum amount and the conditional nature of the payments, but does not provide a full accounting of which objectives were achieved or how the contingent sums were paid.
Did Coventry have a sell-on clause?
Yes. Sporting’s original notice said Coventry would receive 15% of the profit on a future transfer, not 15% of the next club’s entire transfer payment. In other words, the stated base was future-transfer profit (the Portuguese filing uses “mais-valia”), rather than gross proceeds. Sporting’s notice also said that percentage could be reduced to as low as 10% under specified conditions.

Why did Coventry’s sell-on percentage fall from 15% to 10%?
In a notice dated 28 July 2024, Sporting said the percentage had been reduced from 15% to 10% following the achievement of €2 million in contracted objectives and Sporting’s exercise of a corresponding €1 million option. Those figures explain the reduction Sporting announced; they should not be confused with the separate €20 million agreed amount or the maximum €4 million in conditional additions. Do the disclosed costs show Coventry’s net receipt?
No. Sporting separately disclosed €2 million in intermediary-services costs and said it would bear solidarity mechanism amounts due to third-party clubs. Those disclosures do not provide a complete reconciliation of the transaction or establish Coventry’s final net cash receipt. It would therefore be misleading to subtract the intermediary cost from the transfer amount and present the result as Coventry’s take-home figure.

What were Gyökeres’s contract terms at Sporting?
Sporting said the five-season employment contract ran through 30 June 2028 and included a €100 million release clause. That clause was a term of his Sporting contract, not the fee Coventry received for the 2023 transfer. Sporting CP’s signing announcement, 13 July 2023

Sporting’s signing announcement credited Gyökeres with 22 goals and 12 assists in 50 Coventry appearances in the preceding season. BBC Sport reported 21 Championship goals and 12 assists in 2022–23, a narrower competition-specific tally; it also described the move as Coventry’s club-record sale.
