Re:

How Much Cash Should You Keep Outside Your Investment Portfolio?

There is no universal cash percentage for investors. Start with three to six months of realistic expenses, add known near-term bills, and adjust for income stability, dependents, insurance and access needs.

Short answer: A practical starting point is cash equal to three to six months of essential expenses, held outside your investment portfolio. That range is a rule of thumb cited in Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) home-buying guidance—not a universal portfolio allocation or a guarantee that every household has enough. Your target should also cover known near-term bills and reflect income reliability, dependents, insurance, debt obligations and how quickly you could replace lost income.

“Outside the portfolio” means liquid money reserved for emergencies and near-term spending, rather than stocks, bonds or other investments intended for longer-term growth. The right amount is measured against your cash needs and expenses, not as a fixed percentage of your investment assets.

What cash outside your portfolio is meant to cover

An emergency reserve is for unplanned financial shocks: a car or home repair, a medical bill, or a loss of income. The CFPB recommends thinking about the unexpected expenses you have faced before and what they cost, rather than choosing an arbitrary balance. See the CFPB’s emergency-fund guide.

  • Near-term spending: cash for rent, taxes, insurance premiums, tuition, a planned move or another bill due soon.
  • Long-term investments: money that can remain invested through market declines because you do not expect to spend it soon.

A portfolio can be diversified and still be the wrong place for an emergency. Selling during a market decline can turn a temporary cash need into a permanent investment loss. Conversely, keeping every dollar in cash can reduce the growth potential of money you will not need for years.

How to calculate a starting target

1. Find your real monthly baseline

Review several months of bank and card records. Start with expenses you must continue if your income stops:

  • Housing, utilities and basic communications
  • Groceries and essential transportation
  • Insurance premiums and required debt payments
  • Childcare, medication and other unavoidable care costs

Do not rely only on a current-month budget. Include irregular costs such as repairs, medical treatment, annual insurance bills and financial support for family members. The CFPB’s budgeting guidance specifically points readers toward accounting for irregular expenses; its spending-assessment worksheet is a useful way to identify them.

2. Convert irregular costs into a monthly amount

Add the nonmonthly costs you reasonably expect over a year and divide by 12. For example, $6,000 of annual repairs, medical costs and insurance payments adds $500 to a monthly baseline. If essential monthly bills total $4,000, your planning baseline becomes $4,500.

3. Apply the three-to-six-month reference range

Using a $4,500 baseline, three months is $13,500 and six months is $27,000. The CFPB includes three to six months of expenses as a rule of thumb in its down-payment planning guidance. The page does not state a publication year. Treat the range as an initial planning reference, not as an officially optimal cash allocation for every investor.

4. Add known bills separately

If you know that a $10,000 tax bill, tuition payment or move is due before your investments should be touched, reserve that amount in addition to the emergency target. A planned purchase is not an emergency, and including it in the three-to-six-month figure can make the reserve appear larger than it really is.

When three months may be too little or six months may not be enough

The CFPB says the amount depends on your circumstances and prior unexpected expenses. It does not publish a formula that assigns a precise number of months for a particular job, debt level, family size or portfolio. These are practical factors to consider when choosing a point within—or beyond—the range:

Income stability

Someone with a predictable salary and a short, realistic job search may choose a lower point in the range than a contractor, commission-based worker or business owner whose income can stop abruptly. Consider how long replacing your income actually took in past disruptions, not only how secure the job feels today.

Dependents and shared obligations

Children, a dependent adult, a partner with irregular income or family members you support can increase the amount you would need during an interruption. Count obligations that would continue even if the person providing income changed.

Insurance and other backstops

Health, disability, homeowners or renters, and auto insurance can reduce the size of a financial shock, but deductibles, exclusions and claim delays still require cash. Verify what you would have to pay before coverage responds.

Debt and fixed commitments

Large required payments leave less room to cut spending during a job loss. A household with a mortgage, private education debt or other inflexible obligations may need a larger reserve than a household that can quickly reduce its monthly bills.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ability to replace income

Severance, unemployment benefits, a second income or readily available family support may shorten the period your savings must cover. Count only support you can reasonably rely on and understand the timing and conditions.

These considerations are planning judgments, not CFPB-backed numeric adjustments. The evidence supports tailoring the amount to your circumstances rather than claiming that every investor needs a particular percentage of assets in cash.

A worked example: separate emergencies from planned spending

Suppose a household has $4,000 of essential monthly bills and averages $6,000 of irregular costs each year. Its baseline is $4,500 per month, producing an emergency range of $13,500 to $27,000. It also expects a $10,000 tax payment in eight months.

Purpose Calculation Amount
Emergency reserve, lower reference point $4,500 × 3 $13,500
Emergency reserve, higher reference point $4,500 × 6 $27,000
Known tax payment Separate planned obligation $10,000
Total liquid cash to schedule Emergency range plus tax cash $23,500–$37,000

The example does not establish a recommendation for every household. It shows why a single “cash percentage” can hide the difference between money for emergencies and money already committed to a known date.

Where to hold the reserve

Accessibility and safety matter more than chasing a return on money you may need tomorrow. The CFPB identifies bank or credit union accounts, prepaid cards and physical cash as possible places for emergency savings. It describes a dedicated bank or credit union account as generally safe, while warning that physical cash can be stolen, lost or destroyed.

Location Useful features Important limits and checks
Bank savings account Dedicated, liquid deposit account; straightforward access Check fees, withdrawal or transfer rules, and applicable deposit insurance
Bank money market deposit account Deposit account that may offer access features beyond ordinary savings The CFPB says transaction limits and minimum deposit requirements may apply; confirm terms and insurance
Credit union deposit account Deposit account at a credit union with analogous federal insurance when the institution is covered Confirm the credit union’s insurance status, ownership category, fees and access rules
Prepaid card Can make funds accessible without using a checking account Review fees, reload rules, access and protections before relying on it for a large reserve
Physical cash Immediate access during outages or when electronic access fails It can be lost, stolen or destroyed; keep only an amount appropriate for those risks
Money market mutual fund Investment vehicle that may provide cash-like access It is not a savings or checking account and is not converted into an insured deposit by check-writing features

Money market account versus money market mutual fund

The names are similar but the products are legally different. A bank money market account is a deposit account. A money market mutual fund is an investment. The CFPB explains this distinction and notes that a fund is not a savings or checking account even when it offers check-writing. Read the CFPB’s explanation, last reviewed August 28, 2026, at What is a money market account?

Before placing emergency money in either product, verify whether the balance is a deposit or an investment, how quickly you can withdraw it, whether transactions are limited, and what protections apply. A fund’s cash-like design does not create FDIC insurance.

How deposit insurance affects large cash balances

At an insured bank, the general FDIC coverage limit is $250,000 for accounts with the same owner or owners. Credit-union accounts have analogous coverage through the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA). The CFPB describes the limit and ownership caveat at How can I be sure my money is safe in my bank account?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Coverage depends on the institution, account type, ownership structure and how accounts are categorized. If your balances approach or exceed $250,000, or you use multiple owners or unusual ownership arrangements, ask the institution or use the insurer’s estimator to confirm the specific coverage. Do not assume that splitting accounts at the same bank automatically creates additional coverage.

Build and maintain the reserve

  1. Record spending. Use statements and receipts, including annual and irregular bills, to calculate your baseline.
  2. Separate purposes. Keep emergency savings distinct from money earmarked for taxes, tuition, travel or a planned purchase.
  3. Choose a target within the range. Place income stability, dependents, insurance, debt and likely job-search time on the same decision list.
  4. Automate contributions. Direct part of each paycheck or irregular payment to the reserve until the target is reached.
  5. Keep access practical. Test transfers and understand transaction limits, minimums, fees and withdrawal timing before an emergency occurs.
  6. Recalculate after major changes. Revisit the target after a move, job change, new dependent, debt payoff, insurance change or sustained change in spending.
  7. Replenish after use. If a repair or income interruption draws down the reserve, temporarily redirect surplus cash toward rebuilding it before increasing long-term investments.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Using a fixed percentage of investments

No reviewed CFPB guidance prescribes a universal percentage of portfolio assets to hold in cash. Correct the mistake by calculating expenses and circumstances first.

Counting volatile investments as emergency cash

Stocks, bond funds and money market mutual funds can change in value or have different access and protection rules. Label them as investments unless you have verified the product and its risks.

Ignoring irregular expenses

A monthly budget that omits insurance renewals, repairs or medical costs understates the reserve. Convert realistic annual costs into a monthly amount.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Putting the entire reserve in physical cash

Cash at home is immediately available but vulnerable to theft, loss and destruction. Use only an amount justified by access needs and protect the rest in an appropriate account.

Assuming an account name proves safety

“Money market” can describe either a bank deposit account or an investment fund. Check the legal product type and insurance status rather than relying on the label.

When extra cash can move into the portfolio

After emergency savings and known near-term obligations are funded, money with a genuinely long time horizon can be evaluated for investment. The decision should account for your goals, risk tolerance, tax situation and ability to withstand a market decline. Do not move money needed for a foreseeable bill merely because the emergency account has reached six months.

The practical test is simple: if an unexpected bill arrived tomorrow or income stopped, could you pay the obligation without selling a long-term investment at an inconvenient time? If not, your liquid target is not finished, regardless of your portfolio size.
