American Express currently shows 10,000 Membership Rewards points as worth $70 when redeemed at Amazon. That is 0.7 cents per point, calculated as $70 ÷ 10,000 × 100. The figure is the standard value displayed by Amex’s Rewards Points Calculator, not a permanent cash rate or a guarantee that every account will see the same offer.
Amex says its calculator excludes discounts and promotions and that point values can change. Before you confirm an Amazon purchase, check both the live calculator and the conversion shown in your own Amazon checkout.

What the Amazon valuation means
The Amazon figure is a redemption-specific value. Membership Rewards points do not have one universal cash price: the value depends on the way you use them. Amex’s own FAQ states that “the value of Membership Rewards points varies according to how you choose to use them.” Using points at Amazon is one route, alongside options such as gift cards, statement credits, checkout payments with participating merchants, and travel booked through Amex.
At the currently displayed Amazon rate, each point offsets 0.7 cents of eligible Amazon spending. In dollar terms, 1,000 points would offset about $7 and 10,000 points would offset $70 if the same rate is available at checkout. Those smaller examples are mathematical illustrations of the displayed conversion, not separate promises from Amex.

Standard value is not a guaranteed cash value
Amex labels the calculator figures as standard values. The label matters because promotions, account-specific offers, participating merchants, eligible products, and program rules can affect what you are offered. The calculator also says that its standard values exclude discounts and promotions and may change. Treat the number as a current reference point to verify, rather than as a fixed exchange rate for all future Amazon orders.
Why the same points can be worth more or less elsewhere
A point used for an eligible statement charge may produce a different credit from a point used at Amazon. A gift-card offer can have a separate conversion, and a travel booking can use another rate. Comparing the number of points alone is misleading; compare the dollars shown for the same balance, the restrictions on the redemption, and whether you would otherwise pay cash for the purchase.
What you need before using points at Amazon
Amazon redemption is not available simply because you hold Membership Rewards points. Amex’s terms require an eligible Membership Rewards Card Account and a linked Amazon.com account. You must link the eligible Card Account to Amazon and link the associated Rewards Account before points can be displayed and applied.

- An Amazon.com account that can be linked to that card.
- A successful connection between the Amazon account and the Membership Rewards account.
- A checkout that actually presents Shop with Points and shows the conversion available to your account.
The June 2026 Membership Rewards terms also say the option is unavailable when the only linked Card Product is a Legacy Card. Because eligibility and participating products can change, the checkout screen and the current terms control what you can do.

How to link your Amex account to Amazon
Amex describes two setup paths. Choose the one that matches whether you need to redeem immediately.
Path 1: Link after a purchase with the eligible card
- Use the eligible Amex card for an Amazon purchase, following Amazon’s normal checkout process.
- Use Amazon’s Shop with Points setup prompts to add the eligible Card Account and connect the Rewards Account.
- Complete the authorization steps shown by Amazon and Amex.
- Allow up to 72 hours for this linking method to finish. Until the connection is active, your points balance may not appear as a payment option.
This route can work when you are setting up the feature in advance, but it is not the right choice if you need to spend points immediately after adding the card.
Path 2: Link from checkout for immediate use
- Add the eligible Amex card to your Amazon account and begin checkout for the order you want to pay for.
- At checkout, find the eligible card and select Learn More next to it.
- Follow the displayed steps to link the Amazon account with the Membership Rewards account.
- Return to the payment choices and confirm that points are available and that the displayed dollar conversion is acceptable.
Amex identifies the checkout method as the path to use when you want to redeem immediately after adding the card. Do not assume that adding the card alone completes the Rewards Account link.
What happens at checkout
Once the accounts are linked, Amazon can display your available points balance and the amount that can be applied to the order. Review the points-to-dollar conversion before placing the order; the live checkout offer is more relevant to your transaction than an older screenshot, saved calculator result, or a general points guide.

Check whether the order contains items, sellers, shipping charges, taxes, subscriptions, or other components that Amazon excludes from Shop with Points. The exact eligible amount is determined by Amazon’s checkout and Shop with Points terms. If the points option disappears after you change the order, shipping address, or payment method, recalculate the purchase rather than assuming the original conversion still applies.
Confirm the amount you are actually applying
- Verify the number of points selected.
- Verify the dollar credit shown beside that selection.
- Check whether a remaining balance will be charged to the Amex card or another payment method.
- Review the final order total after shipping, tax, discounts, and promotional credits.
- Save the order confirmation so you can reconcile the points and card charge later.
A points redemption can look attractive when viewed as a percentage discount, but the useful comparison is the dollar amount you avoid paying today versus what those points could provide through another eligible channel.
Returns, cancellations, and account information
Amazon’s Shop with Points terms apply in addition to Amex’s Membership Rewards terms. Amazon controls whether a return or cancellation is authorized under its policies. Amex’s June 2026 terms say that Amazon must authorize the return before Amex can credit the card or return the points.

When you link the accounts, account information is shared with Amazon so that the points balance can be displayed and used. Review the permissions and disclosures presented during linking, especially if more than one Amex product is stored in the Amazon account.
How Amazon compares with other Membership Rewards uses
Amex’s April 30, 2026 explainer lists these published category figures. They provide context, but none of them replaces the Amazon-specific conversion shown by the calculator.

These are category-level figures from Amex, not a promise that every account will show every option. Participating merchants, eligible charges, available products, and rates can change. Use the same number of points as your comparison baseline and record the dollars each route would provide at the time you are ready to redeem.
A practical decision framework
Use Amazon when the immediate discount is the priority
Applying points at Amazon can make sense when you already intend to place the order, the checkout conversion is clear, and you value reducing today’s out-of-pocket cost more than pursuing a potentially different redemption. It is also straightforward for a small balance when you do not have a near-term travel or gift-card use.

Pause when another option shows a higher verified value
If your account offers a higher dollar return for the same points through a redemption you would actually use, compare the net benefit before accepting the Amazon credit. A nominally higher rate is not automatically better if it requires buying something you would not otherwise purchase, creates fees, or expires under separate terms.
Do not value points from a rate that is unavailable to you
The published 1-cent travel figure, for example, does not turn every Membership Rewards point into a guaranteed 1-cent Amazon credit. It applies to the stated travel route. Your own calculator and checkout are the authoritative evidence for the transaction you are considering.
Common problems and fixes
The points balance does not appear
Confirm that the Rewards Account is linked, not merely that the card is saved in Amazon. If you used the post-purchase setup path, allow the stated 72-hour window. If you need immediate use, restart from checkout and select Learn More beside the eligible card.
The points option vanishes after you edit the order
Recheck the items, seller, delivery address, and payment method. Amazon determines eligibility for the revised order, so an option shown for the original cart may not carry over.
Your card is linked but still ineligible
Check whether the only linked Card Product is a Legacy Card, which the June 2026 terms identify as unavailable for this option. If you have multiple Amex products, verify which one is connected to Membership Rewards and which one Amazon is using at checkout.
A returned order has not restored points
Wait for Amazon’s return authorization and retain the return confirmation. Amex’s terms require Amazon authorization before Amex can credit the card or return points. Escalate only after checking both the Amazon order status and the Membership Rewards activity.
Checklist before you click Place your order
- Open the current Amex Rewards Points Calculator and note the value shown for Amazon.
- Confirm that your eligible Card Account and Rewards Account are linked to Amazon.
- Check the live checkout conversion, not just a general published rate.
- Compare the dollars offered with another redemption you can genuinely use.
- Review what happens to shipping, tax, discounts, and any remaining card balance.
- Save the final order and points details in case you later return the item.
The short answer remains 0.7 cents per point at the currently displayed Amazon standard value. The responsible way to redeem is to treat that figure as changeable, verify eligibility and the live checkout amount, and decide based on the purchase you are actually making.
