In the latest country-by-country figures available here, for 2024, the United States was the largest reported source, followed by South Africa, Kazakhstan, Colombia and Indonesia. At Jorf Lasfar, ships deliver coal to the neighbouring port, where dedicated facilities handle it for the power station. The national import figures show the origins of coal entering Morocco; they do not reveal which plant received a particular shipment.
Where does Morocco’s imported coal come from?
World Bank WITS, presenting UN Comtrade data, records 9,317,330,000 kilograms of Moroccan imports in 2024 under HS 2701: “Coal; briquettes, ovoids and similar solid fuels manufactured from coal.” The leading reported partner countries were:
| Reported origin | Imports in 2024 |
|---|---|
| United States | 7,217,450,000 kg |
| South Africa | 890,204,000 kg |
| Kazakhstan | 856,017,000 kg |
| Colombia | 220,549,000 kg |
| Indonesia | 122,693,000 kg |
These are national trade totals for the stated commodity classification, not figures for a single power station. HS 2701 is not a thermal-coal-only category, and the table does not establish that every recorded shipment was burned to generate electricity. It also does not identify the receiving plant, the mine behind an individual cargo, or the companies that sold or shipped it. World Bank WITS’ 2024 Morocco import table is the basis for the country and volume figures.
How does coal reach Morocco’s power stations?
Shipments to Jorf Lasfar
At Jorf Lasfar, on Morocco’s Atlantic coast, coal arrives by ship at the neighbouring purpose-built port. The generating station has dedicated coal-handling facilities, and TAQA Morocco’s 2024 annual report identifies a coal-unloading pier as part of securing the plant’s fuel supply. The route is therefore maritime: imported coal is unloaded at the port and handled for use at the adjacent station. TAQA Morocco’s 2024 annual financial report and its regulatory filing dated 1 May 2026 describe the port and coal facilities.

Stock cover is a dated operator report
In the 1 May 2026 filing, TAQA Morocco described six generating units and approximately 35 days of coal reserves at the site without further deliveries. That is the operator’s reported snapshot, not a fixed reserve requirement or a statement of the plant’s inventory at any later date.
How important is coal in Morocco’s electricity mix?
The U.S. International Trade Administration’s Morocco energy guide reports, citing ANRE, that coal supplied 64 percent of Morocco’s electricity production in 2023. That share is specific to 2023; it should not be presented as a 2024 or 2026 figure. It is also a generation statistic, distinct from the 2024 import volumes above. The Trade Administration’s Morocco energy guide gives the dated figure and attribution.

Who buys the electricity, and what does that tell us?
TAQA Morocco says Jorf Lasfar sells its electricity to ONEE, Morocco’s state utility, under power-purchase agreements. This identifies the electricity buyer, not the coal supplier. The public figures cited here do not connect specific import origins, traders, cargoes or mines to Jorf Lasfar or to individual generating units.

The latest comparable country-by-country coal import breakdown identified here is for 2024; it is not a 2025 or 2026 ranking. Morocco’s Office des Changes describes its official foreign-trade database as queryable and updated quarterly, making it a place to check for newer trade data. A newer table should be compared using the same commodity classification and should not be treated as plant-level delivery evidence. Office des Changes’ foreign-trade database provides the official query tool.
