Neal’s Yard Dairy said a fraudulent buyer posing as a legitimate wholesale distributor obtained more than 22 tonnes of cheese—950 cheeses in total—without paying. The dairy valued the loss at more than £300,000; the Associated Press reported that as approximately $390,000, the basis for headlines rounding it to nearly $400,000. The dairy said it paid the three affected cheesemakers in full.
How was 22 tons of cheese stolen?
Neal’s Yard Dairy described the theft as buyer impersonation and fraud, not a conventional break-in. According to the dairy’s account, the buyer posed as a wholesale distributor for a major French retailer and appeared credible in the European cheese trade. The impersonator presented a detailed contract with payment terms and seemed familiar with the business. The dairy delivered the cheese before discovering the buyer’s identity was false. Neal’s Yard Dairy’s statement and industry warning described the scheme as convincing.
The case illustrates a financial risk in wholesale transactions: a plausible business identity and formal-looking paperwork can create confidence before payment is secured. The details above are the dairy’s account of this particular fraud; they do not establish how often similar scams occur across the cheese trade.
What cheese was stolen from Neal’s Yard Dairy?
The shipment comprised three artisan Cheddars: Hafod Welsh Organic Cheddar, Westcombe Cheddar and Pitchfork Cheddar. Neal’s Yard Dairy reported more than 22 tonnes across 950 cheeses. Those figures describe the wholesale shipment, not consumer-sized wedges. The dairy’s October 2024 statement gave the quantity and names of the cheeses.

The dairy asked cheesemongers to watch for clothbound Cheddar in 10 kg or 24 kg formats with the tags detached, and to contact the dairy if offered or supplied cheese they believed might be connected to the theft. That was an industry appeal, not a confirmed forensic test for identifying the stolen cheeses. The dairy’s warning to the trade set out those details.
How much was the stolen cheese worth, and who bore the loss?
Neal’s Yard Dairy put the loss at more than £300,000. The Associated Press reported an approximate equivalent of $390,000 in its October 26, 2024 coverage, explaining why some headlines describe the haul as worth nearly $400,000. The dollar figure is a reported conversion, not the dairy’s original valuation. The Associated Press report also quoted the dairy saying the high monetary value of the cheeses likely made them a particular target.

The dairy said it paid all three cheesemakers in full despite the loss, describing that decision as part of its commitment to small-scale suppliers. The available statements therefore do not support saying the producers themselves absorbed the full financial loss. Patrick Holden, identified by the dairy as owner of the farm where Hafod is made, said: “It might sound naïve to fall victim to a scam, but the truth is that the artisan cheese world is a place where trust is deeply embedded in all transactions.” Tom Calver, a director of Westcombe Dairy, said: “we’re devastated that this fraud has targeted one of our most valued customers.” Both comments appeared in the dairy’s statement.

Neal’s Yard Dairy said in an October 30, 2024 update that it had learned the Metropolitan Police made an arrest in connection with the theft. The Guardian reported the next day that a 63-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of fraud by false representation and handling stolen goods, questioned and bailed pending further inquiries. The Guardian’s October 31, 2024 report said inquiries were ongoing. These are historical updates: the cited reporting does not establish a later charge, conviction, recovery of the cheese or final case outcome.
