These protections make transaction details harder for public observers to link; they do not hide everything from the recipient or protect every network connection and device.
What a public blockchain observer can see
On a transparent blockchain, transaction details can generally be inspected on the public ledger. Monero is designed differently: its required privacy mechanisms prevent the ordinary transaction record from directly identifying the actual input, exposing a recipient’s published address as the destination, or showing the amount. The Monero Project FAQ says: “All transactions on the network are private by mandate; there is no way to accidentally send a transparent transaction.”
The protections are distinct. Ring signatures obscure which existing output is being spent; stealth addresses create a one-time destination for each payment; and RingCT hides the amount while providing cryptographic proofs that let the network validate the transaction.
How Monero obscures the sender
Ring signatures mix the real spend with decoys
When a Monero transaction spends an output, a ring signature presents that real output alongside other eligible outputs from the blockchain. The signature establishes that one member of the ring authorized the spend without publicly identifying which member it was. The current Monero technical specification lists a ring size of 16: the real output and 15 decoys.

This creates uncertainty for a public observer, not a guarantee that every ring member is equally likely to be the real spend under all possible outside analysis. The decoys are plausible candidates in the signature; they are not additional people sending the transaction.
How Monero obscures the recipient
Stealth addresses create a one-time destination
A recipient can share one public Monero address. For each payment, the sender derives a separate, one-time output address for that recipient. The recipient’s wallet scans blockchain outputs and recognizes the ones intended for it using view-key information and the public spend key.

As a result, an observer cannot simply search the blockchain for the recipient’s published address and use it to list all incoming payments. The recipient can identify payments to their wallet, but those outputs do not appear publicly under the shared address.
How Monero hides transaction amounts
RingCT conceals amounts while allowing validation
Ring Confidential Transactions, or RingCT, hides the ordinary amount transferred in a transaction. Cryptographic proofs allow the network to check that transactions follow the protocol’s rules without publishing those amounts in the clear. The Monero Project’s Moneropedia says RingCT was activated at block 1,220,516 in January 2017 and became mandatory after September 2017.
Not every value associated with a transaction is hidden: the technical book Zero to Monero, Second Edition notes that transaction fees are stored in clear text. RingCT conceals transfer amounts, not every transaction field.

Recipients and chosen verifiers can learn payment details
Blockchain privacy is not secrecy from the person receiving a payment. A recipient’s wallet identifies outputs meant for it and can show the payment details. Monero also supports selectively proving a payment to a chosen party using transaction-specific information, so privacy from the general public does not prevent disclosure to a verifier.

Network metadata needs separate protection
Dandelion++ is designed to make transaction propagation patterns less useful for tracing a transaction’s origin. It does not protect against every network observer. Monero’s technical specification notes that a remote node or an internet service provider or VPN provider may still be relevant to IP privacy; using a remote node does not protect the user’s IP address by default. Tor or I2P must be configured separately for network-layer protection.
People, keys and devices remain part of the picture
Cryptography cannot prevent someone from identifying themselves to a counterparty, exposing keys, using compromised software or otherwise leaking information that links them to a payment. Those risks are outside what the public transaction format can conceal.
Quick Recap

Monero privacy compared with a transparent-chain transaction
| Question | Monero’s public ledger | Transparent-chain transaction |
|---|---|---|
| Is the actual spent output directly identified? | Ring signature hides which member of a 16-output ring was spent. | Not stated in the cited Monero sources; visibility depends on the chain and transaction design. |
| Can a recipient’s published address be used to link incoming payments? | Each payment uses a one-time destination rather than displaying the published address as the output. | Not stated in the cited Monero sources; visibility depends on the chain and transaction design. |
| Is the transfer amount visible? | RingCT conceals ordinary transfer amounts; fees remain visible. | Not stated in the cited Monero sources; visibility depends on the chain and transaction design. |
| Is network-layer IP information protected? | Not by the on-chain privacy mechanisms alone; separate Tor or I2P configuration may be needed. | Not stated in the cited Monero sources. |
