That put the club eighth-highest among the 20 Championship teams with staff-cost figures listed by Salary Sport—but the comparison combines clubs’ latest filed accounts, not one uniform season, and measures whole-club payroll rather than first-team players’ wages alone.
Where Middlesbrough ranks by staff costs
Salary Sport’s latest-filed-year comparison places Middlesbrough eighth among 20 clubs with listed staff-cost figures. The table below shows Boro alongside the clubs immediately around it in the comparison; account years are shown because the figures do not all cover the same season.

The full comparison also lists Burnley at £82.3m, Birmingham City at £38.9m, Stoke City at £33.2m and Bristol City at £35.9m above Middlesbrough’s figure. These are whole-club staff-cost totals, and the league table is assembled from each club’s latest filed year rather than a single common accounting period. Salary Sport says it has accounts for all 24 clubs in its Championship list but staff-cost figures for 20. See Salary Sport’s Championship comparison.
What Middlesbrough’s £36.36m figure includes
The £36.36m is the club’s total staff costs for 2024/25, not a standalone figure for first-team player wages. Salary Sport’s account-derived breakdown lists £32.002m in wages and salaries, £4.147m in social security and £211,000 in pension costs. The wages-and-salaries line is narrower than total staff costs, but it still should not be read as a first-team-only number without a further breakdown. The club-wide payroll includes players as well as coaching, academy and ground staff. View Middlesbrough’s staff-cost breakdown.

Staff costs compared with revenue
Middlesbrough reported £32.476m in revenue for 2024/25. Staff costs were therefore 112% of revenue and exceeded revenue by £3.884m. This ratio gives a sense of how large the payroll was relative to the club’s reported income; it does not mean that 112% of revenue went to first-team players.
For league context, Deloitte’s 2026 Annual Review reports that Championship clubs generated £942m in revenue in 2024/25, down £16m (2%) on the prior season, while operating losses rose 5% to £436m. Those are league-wide figures, not a Middlesbrough-specific measure or a direct comparison of clubs’ payroll ratios. Read Deloitte’s Annual Review of Football Finance.

How the bill changed and what the accounts say
BBC Sport reported that Middlesbrough’s staff costs rose 16% year on year, from £31.4m to £36.4m, in the accounts for the year ended 30 June 2025. It also reported an £11.4m loss for that year. The BBC figures are rounded; the account-derived total listed by Salary Sport is £36.36m. BBC Sport’s report on Middlesbrough’s 2024/25 accounts.
In a directors’ statement reproduced by BBC Sport from the accounts, the club said it would “continue to keep control of operating costs and make as much income as possible available to invest in the football team” while striving for progression and promotion to the Premier League. That statement describes the directors’ stated approach; it does not change what the published staff-cost figure measures.

How to interpret the comparison
- It is not a like-for-like season table. The comparison uses each club’s latest filed year, and the reporting periods differ.
- It is not a player-wage ranking. Staff costs cover a club’s wider workforce, while the available wages-and-salaries line is not broken out as first-team-only pay.
- The rank covers listed data, not every club. Salary Sport’s comparison includes staff-cost figures for 20 of the 24 clubs in its Championship list.
- Payroll size and affordability are different measures. Middlesbrough’s 112% ratio compares total staff costs with reported revenue; it does not establish player quality or league competitiveness.
