Michigan’s income tax helps fund state government, but the available figures do not show that income tax alone pays for local community services. In fiscal year 2025, personal income tax and sales tax together accounted for 59.0% of Michigan’s $42.0 billion in state tax collections. That combined share shows their importance, not income tax’s individual share or a direct link to any particular local service.
How important is Michigan income tax to state revenue?
Michigan collected $42.0 billion in state taxes in fiscal year 2025, according to the Michigan Office of Financial Management. Personal income tax and sales tax together made up 59.0% of that total. The published figure combines the two taxes; it does not say what portion came from income tax alone.

For comparison, state tax collections were $41.5 billion in FY2024, also reported by the Office of Financial Management. These are fiscal-year totals, not individual taxpayers’ tax bills.

What is Michigan’s income tax rate in 2026?
Michigan’s individual and fiduciary income-tax rate is 4.25% for tax year 2026, the Michigan Department of Treasury said in its April 15, 2026 notice, “4.25% Income Tax Rate for Individuals and Fiduciaries in 2026 Tax Year.” Treasury stated: “As a result, the rate in effect under Section 51 for the 2026 tax year is 4.25%.”
#1 Best Overall
The rate is subject to a statutory annual adjustment mechanism. For the FY2025 comparison used in determining the 2026 rate, general fund/general-purpose revenue decreased 1.56% while inflation increased 2.70%; a rate reduction therefore did not apply. Those figures explain the 2026 determination, not a guaranteed outcome in future years.
What do recent income-tax estimates say?
The Michigan Senate Fiscal Agency’s May 14, 2026 outlook estimated net individual income-tax collections of $14.2 billion for FY2025–26, projecting 6.4% growth against its prior fiscal-year baseline and citing employment and wage growth as factors. This is a forecast, not a finalized or audited collection result. It also covers a fiscal year, whereas the 4.25% rate above applies to tax year 2026.

Does income tax directly fund local community services?
The statewide totals establish that income tax is an important source of state revenue, but they do not trace each income-tax dollar to a named service or show what any particular city, township, county, or school district receives. State tax collections and local budgets are different measures. To identify the funding for a particular service or place, readers need the relevant state program’s allocation records or that local government’s budget.

The available figures support the importance of income tax as part of Michigan’s revenue base, but do not establish that it is the sole or direct backbone of local services.
