How Market Corrections Differ From Bear Markets and Crashes

A correction commonly marks a decline around 10% from a recent high, a bear market uses a 20% convention, and a crash describes a sudden extreme fall. The definitions vary, and none is a forecast or proof of recession.

A market correction is commonly described as a decline of about 10% from a recent high; a bear market commonly means a decline of 20% or more; and a crash describes a sudden, extreme fall over a short period. These are conventions, not universally binding definitions. In particular, “crash” has no standard percentage trigger, and a downturn label by itself does not tell you whether the economy is in a recession or what the market will do next.

What is a stock market correction, and how does one work?

A correction is a name commonly given to a decline of around 10% from a recent high in a market index or investment. It describes the size of a drop relative to a reference point; it is not a diagnosis of why prices fell or a forecast of what happens next.

The boundary is not identical across educational sources. Fidelity describes the common convention as a drop of at least 10% from recent market highs. Morningstar describes a correction as greater than 10% but less than 20%. Because of that difference, “about 10%” or “commonly described as at least 10%” is more accurate than presenting one exact boundary as universally official.

How to calculate the decline

To interpret a percentage decline, identify the specific index or investment, its relevant recent high, and the value being compared with that high. The calculation is: (recent high − current value) ÷ recent high × 100. For example, if an index hypothetically falls from 100 to 90, the decline from that reference high is 10%. This arithmetic illustrates the convention; it is not a claim about a real market move.

The starting point matters. A percentage decline is measured against a chosen peak, not against an investor’s purchase price or an unrelated index. A headline that says “the market is down 10%” is incomplete unless it makes clear which market measure and which high it uses.

What does a bear market mean?

A bear market commonly refers to a decline of 20% or more from a recent high. Investor.gov’s general glossary definition adds a duration condition: a broad market index falls by 20% or more over at least a two-month period. Other investor-education sources use the 20% threshold without specifying that duration. The 20% convention is common, but the time rule depends on the definition being used.

For a simple illustration, a hypothetical index that falls from 100 to 80 has declined 20% from that reference high. Whether a particular source would also require the decline to persist for a stated period depends on its convention. If duration matters to the claim, name the definition rather than quietly treating the two versions as identical.

A bear-market label is about a market measure’s fall from a high. It does not, by itself, mean that every stock or asset has fallen by 20%, or that an economic recession is underway. Specify the index or asset under discussion instead of generalizing from one measure to all investments.

What does “market crash” mean?

“Crash” emphasizes speed and severity: it is commonly used for a sudden, extreme decline over a single day or a very short period. Unlike the correction and bear-market conventions, the reviewed definitions do not establish a universal percentage that a decline must reach before it can be called a crash.

That makes “crash” a descriptive label, not a threshold investors can apply as precisely as a percentage calculation. A sharp short-term fall may be described as a crash even if a particular source has not specified a numeric cutoff. Conversely, the word alone does not establish the full size of a decline, how long it lasted, or whether it later continued.

Correction vs. bear market vs. crash

Term Common meaning Size convention Time element What the term establishes
Correction A market or asset decline from a recent high Often around 10%; exact boundary wording varies No duration requirement established in the cited definitions A commonly used description of the decline’s size, not its cause or next direction
Bear market A substantial decline in a broad market index or other stated measure Commonly 20% or more Investor.gov’s general glossary definition specifies at least two months; other educational sources may omit a duration rule A decline meeting the convention being used; not proof of a recession
Crash A sudden, extreme decline No universal numeric trigger established in the reviewed definitions Over a single day or very short period in Chase’s description A description of speed and severity, not a standardized category with a fixed cutoff

The terms are not three mutually exclusive boxes with a single official rulebook. A decline can be sudden and severe, then continue far enough to meet a bear-market convention. Likewise, a drop around the correction threshold can deepen rather than stop there. The label depends on the measure, reference high, time period, and definition used.

How to read a market-downturn headline

When a report uses one of these labels, check the underlying claim before treating the word as a complete description. A useful reading sequence is:

  • Comfortable Non-Slip Grip:The ergonomic pen barrel has a soft rubberized coating for a comfortable, non-slip grip, so you won't get fatigued even after long hours of writing.
  1. Identify the measure. Is the report discussing a broad market index, a particular asset, or something else? Do not assume one index describes every investment.
  2. Find the reference high. The percentage decline is relative to a peak. Check which high and comparison date the report uses.
  3. Check the arithmetic and threshold. A correction is commonly associated with about 10%; a bear market commonly uses 20% or more. Treat these as conventions and note whether the source uses a different boundary.
  4. Check the time dimension. A sudden move over a very short period supports the descriptive use of “crash.” For the bear-market definition, see whether the source requires persistence; Investor.gov specifies at least two months, while some other educational definitions do not.
  5. Separate the label from the explanation. The word does not, on its own, identify the cause of a decline, establish economic conditions, or forecast the next move.

Do corrections, bear markets, or crashes mean a recession?

No. A downturn label is not proof that the economy is in a recession. Market prices reflect investors’ expectations and reactions to information, and can diverge from current economic conditions. A market can be falling without that label establishing a recession, just as the label alone cannot settle what the broader economy is doing.

Keep the two questions separate: the market question is how a specified index or asset has moved from a specified high; the economy question is whether economic conditions meet a separate description. The percentage thresholds in these market terms do not answer the second question.

What these labels do not tell you

Calling a decline a correction, bear market, or crash does not tell you how long it will last, how far it will ultimately fall, or when it will recover. None of the definitions supplies a reliable forecast. Nor do the terms provide a consistent basis for claiming how often each event occurs or how large its average loss or duration is; those comparisons require a consistent dataset and definitions across categories.

Use the labels as shorthand for describing a move, not as a substitute for stating the facts. The clearest account names the index or asset, the peak used as the reference, the size of the decline, the period measured, and the convention behind the label. That is more informative than the label alone.
