Margin interest is the cost of borrowing from your brokerage firm. It usually accrues each day that your account has an interest-bearing debit balance, then appears as a charge on a monthly schedule. The amount depends on your broker’s margin agreement: the balance it counts, the rate and any rate tiers, the day-count method, settlement timing, and how it treats cash in other parts of your account. The examples below describe particular brokers’ published methods, not rules that apply to every account.
How the calculation works
A useful estimate for one day is:
Daily interest ≈ interest-bearing debit balance × annual margin rate ÷ day-count basis

For a billing period, add the daily interest charges. When the debit balance and rate stay constant, the calculation can be simplified to:
Estimated period interest = debit balance × (annual rate ÷ day-count basis) × number of days

The balance in this calculation is not necessarily the cash figure you happen to see on a screen. Each broker’s agreement defines the balance used to calculate interest, and it may change as transactions settle or other account activity occurs.
A worked illustration
Webull gives an example using an average debit balance of $10,000, an annual rate of 8.74%, a 360-day basis, and a 30-day period. The calculation is $10,000 × (0.0874 ÷ 360) × 30, or about $72.83. This is a broker’s illustration of its stated method—not a current rate quote, a prediction of what another broker will charge, or a guarantee of the charge on an individual Webull account.
At a 360-day basis, dividing the annual rate by 360 produces a larger daily rate than dividing it by 365. Schwab explicitly notes that its 360-day method results in a higher effective annual cost than a 365-day calculation. The broker examples discussed here use 360, but that does not establish a universal industry convention; check the basis in your own account terms.

When interest begins—and when the charge appears
Daily accrual and monthly billing are different events. A broker can calculate interest each day without debiting it from the account each day. In the examples published by three firms, charges are posted monthly, but on different schedules:
| Broker | Described posting schedule | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Webull | Typically between the 15th and 18th | The firm describes this as its typical schedule. |
| Schwab | The second-to-last business trading day of the month | This is Schwab’s stated schedule, not a general rule. |
| Interactive Brokers (IBKR) | The third business day of the following month | IBKR describes the posting of actual interest on this schedule. |
Posting dates can change. Check the current explanation from your broker and the timing shown on your own statement rather than assuming that another firm’s billing date applies to you.
Settlement can affect the first day counted
Trade timing matters because brokers may base the interest-bearing debit on settled activity. Schwab says a loan created by an order begins accruing interest as of the trade’s settlement date; its cited explanation identifies settlement as T+1. Webull says its closing debit balance is based on position settlement and describes a same-day opening and closing of a position as not incurring margin interest under its method. That example should not be extended to other firms or account activity: the agreement and the broker’s treatment of the specific transaction control.

Which balance is charged interest?
A margin debit can arise when the account borrows to finance a purchase or another transaction. You do not necessarily have to think of yourself as deliberately taking out a loan for borrowing to occur. FINRA explains that a broker may lend the shortfall between a security’s purchase price and the customer’s own funds, with securities serving as collateral: “The shortfall between the purchase price and the amount of money you put in is a loan from the brokerage firm, and you will incur interest costs, just as with any other loan.”
A negative cash balance can be a useful clue, but it may not be enough to reproduce the broker’s calculation. The agreement’s definition of debit balance, trade settlement, withdrawals, option activity, and internal transfers may affect the balance used. Compare the statement with the account’s margin balance and the agreement’s calculation terms; do not assume that one displayed cash figure is the complete interest calculation.
Do positive cash or sweep balances offset a margin debit?
Not always, and the treatment can depend on the account structure and the broker’s rules. The SEC investor bulletin recommends asking whether the firm nets balances between cash and margin accounts, whether account structure changes that treatment, and how cash or money-market sweep balances affect the calculation. A positive figure elsewhere in the account should not be treated as an offset until the broker confirms that it is included in the interest calculation.

Why the annual rate may not be one flat number
Margin rates differ among firms and may change. Some rates depend on the amount borrowed. Interactive Brokers describes a tiered approach in which portions of a loan can be charged at different rates, producing a blended rate rather than applying one rate to the entire debit. The rate and thresholds can also vary over time, so use the current schedule for the account’s currency and expected borrowing level rather than relying on an old example or headline figure.
When asking about a quoted rate, find out whether it is fixed, tied to a benchmark, or set at the firm’s discretion; whether the firm applies tiers to portions of the debit; and which balance level determines the applicable rate. The rate that matters for an actual charge is the one applicable to the account and balance during the relevant accrual period.

- Find the statement entry. Identify the date and amount of the posted interest charge, and note the period the statement or account activity associates with it.
- Locate the margin agreement and rate schedule. Find the agreement’s definition of the debit balance, its annual rate or tier schedule, its day-count basis, and any terms explaining cash netting or unpaid interest.
- Review account activity for the accrual period. Look for transactions that could have created or changed a debit, including purchases, settlement, withdrawals, option activity, and transfers. Use the broker’s margin balance information as well as its cash figure.
- Check the rate that applied during each part of the period. If the rate or debit changed, a single average-rate estimate may not match the broker’s daily calculation. For a tiered loan, determine whether the schedule applies different rates to portions of the balance.
- Estimate the charge using the broker’s stated method. For each day, use the agreement-defined interest-bearing balance and applicable annual rate, divided by the stated day-count basis. Add the daily amounts for the period. If the balance and rate were constant, the simplified period formula can be used instead.
- Ask the broker about any unexplained difference. Request the daily debit balance, rate, day-count basis, accrual dates, settlement treatment, and any cash-netting or tier calculation used. Those details make it possible to distinguish a timing difference from an incorrect assumption about the rate or balance.
This procedure produces an estimate unless you have the broker’s actual daily figures and complete terms. A visible monthly amount alone generally does not show which balance or rate was used on every accrual day.

Questions to ask before borrowing or comparing brokers
Compare terms at the balance you expect to carry, not just a headline rate. The SEC investor bulletin advises customers to ask what the current rate is, whether it can vary, how changes are disclosed, how often interest accrues, and how to reduce the loan balance. For a fuller comparison, ask each firm:
- What annual rate applies at my expected loan amount and account currency? Is it fixed, benchmark-linked, or otherwise variable?
- Are rates tiered? If so, do different rates apply to portions of the loan, and what are the current thresholds?
- How does the agreement define the interest-bearing debit balance? Which settlement date starts accrual?
- What day-count basis does the calculation use, and does the firm accrue daily?
- Can cash or sweep balances in this account—or balances in a separate account—offset the debit?
- When is accrued interest posted? How does the firm treat interest that remains unpaid?
- What account eligibility rules or minimums apply, and how can I reduce the debit balance?
- How are rate changes communicated, and where can I find the complete rate schedule and any markup terms?
The SEC investor bulletin says that, in general, a firm must provide at least 30 days’ written notice of changes in the method of computing interest. Treat that as SEC staff investor education, not a substitute for checking the governing account documents or the requirements applicable to your account.
What to do if the terms are hard to find
Look beyond a promotional or headline rate. Find the account’s actual margin agreement and the rate schedule that applies to its balance and currency. A FINRA BrokerCheck report concerning Axos Clearing documents a historical disclosure failure: the findings say the firm’s margin agreement did not provide the current base rate or explain its relationship to a public rate, and did not provide the introducing broker’s markup or otherwise ensure customers received it. This is a specific historical case, not evidence that every firm has the same disclosure problem. It does show why customers should identify the applicable rate schedule and markup terms rather than relying only on a headline rate.
