Plan on about four years for a typical full-time bachelor’s degree, but the FBI does not require applicants to spend exactly four years in college. Its special-agent guidance requires a bachelor’s degree or higher and lists separate experience requirements for qualification routes. After meeting those requirements, selection and hiring may take a year or longer.
How long college usually takes
A bachelor’s degree commonly takes about four years of full-time study. That is a general college-planning estimate, not an FBI rule: the FBI requires the credential but does not set a number of years in which you must earn it. Time to graduation depends on factors such as course load, transfer credits, and whether you study part time.
The FBI’s current Special Agent Application and Evaluation Process and its Special Agent FAQ state the degree requirement without naming a mandatory undergraduate major. Check the live application information for the qualification route you intend to use.
What education and experience the FBI lists
A degree alone may not meet the qualification route for which you apply. The FBI’s current special-agent application page describes these routes:

| Qualification grade | Listed route |
|---|---|
| GL-9 | Bachelor’s degree plus one year of sworn law-enforcement officer experience, or an advanced degree. |
| GL-10 | Bachelor’s degree plus at least two years of full-time professional work experience, or an advanced degree plus at least one year of full-time professional work experience. |
These are the routes described on the FBI’s application page; exact language can vary by hiring route and may change. Review the current FBI special-agent qualifications rather than assuming that any bachelor’s degree by itself is sufficient.
Can a master’s degree substitute for a bachelor’s degree?
The FBI FAQ says applicants need at least a bachelor’s degree or higher from a U.S.-accredited college or university. An advanced degree appears as an alternative in some qualification routes, but it does not mean college can be skipped: the listed advanced-degree routes include the work-experience conditions shown above.

Does military service waive the degree requirement?
No. The FBI’s Special Agent FAQ says military service does not waive the bachelor’s-degree requirement.
Allow time for the hiring process, too
College is only one part of the timeline. The FBI describes application screening, Phase I testing, a physical-fitness assessment, a meet-and-greet, Phase II written assessment and interview, followed—if a conditional offer is made—by steps including a medical evaluation, polygraph, and background investigation. See the FBI’s evaluation-process stages.

The FBI’s general Eligibility and Hiring guidance says hiring can take up to a year. Its Special Agent FAQ says the special-agent application process generally takes at least a year and often longer. These are agency estimates, not a promised schedule for an individual applicant. If you are planning from the start of college, account separately for earning the degree, meeting any applicable experience requirement, and completing selection and hiring.

Education and experience are not the only conditions. FBI guidance identifies U.S. citizenship, age and driver’s-license requirements, physical fitness and medical standards, eligibility for a Top Secret Sensitive Compartmented Information clearance, and the ability to legally possess and carry a firearm. General FBI employment guidance also discusses public-record and drug-policy requirements. Age exceptions may apply in specified circumstances. Consult the current special-agent application requirements and general eligibility guidance for the details that apply to you.
