Sony’s later annual data records 59.2 million cumulative sell-in units as of March 31, 2024; its latest company data reports more than 95 million sold-in worldwide as of June 30, 2026. Those totals count different stages of distribution, so they should not be read as a direct count of consoles bought by players.
What does the 59 million PS5 sales figure mean?
Sony’s FY2026 Q1 supplemental information lists 59.2 million cumulative PS5 sell-in units as of March 31, 2024. That is the dated figure behind the rounded “59 million” milestone. Sony’s annual cumulative sell-in table reports units sold into distribution, not a count of individual consumers’ purchases.
In ordinary terms, sell-in tracks consoles moving through Sony’s sales channel, while sell-through tracks units sold on to customers. The measures answer related but different questions: sell-in indicates how many units entered the channel; sell-through is closer to how many reached consumers. Sony’s separate December 2023 announcement described more than 50 million PS5 consoles as “sold through to consumers.” That milestone is not interchangeable with the 59.2 million sell-in total.
How many PS5 consoles has Sony reported selling now?
Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Business Data & Sales page reports more than 95 million PS5 units sold-in worldwide as of June 30, 2026. This is the latest dated total in the company data cited here; it is a cumulative sell-in figure, not a contemporaneous estimate of how many consoles are in players’ homes.

Sony’s annual series gives these dated cumulative sell-in totals:
| Date | PS5 cumulative sell-in units | Source |
|---|---|---|
| March 31, 2024 | 59.2 million | Sony FY2026 Q1 Supplemental Information |
| March 31, 2025 | 77.7 million | Sony FY2026 Q1 Supplemental Information |
| March 31, 2026 | 93.7 million | Sony FY2026 Q1 Supplemental Information |
| June 30, 2026 | More than 95 million | Sony Interactive Entertainment Business Data & Sales |
The June 2026 figure is later than the March 31 annual-series entry. Sony’s FY2026 Q1 supplemental information also presents 59.2 million for March 31, 2024, while its Corporate Report 2024 gives 61.7 million cumulative sell-in units as of June 30, 2024. The dates differ, and the figures should not be treated as conflicting measurements taken at the same time.

How does sell-through compare with sell-in?
Sony’s Corporate Report 2024 states that cumulative PS5 sell-through reached 56 million by March 31, 2024. Its note says the sell-through total includes both PS5 and PS5 Digital Edition. This consumer-facing measure and the 59.2 million sell-in total are both dated March 31, 2024, but they describe different points in the distribution process. Sony’s report also says monthly active console figures are estimates based on company research and may be updated.
For another consumer milestone, Sony announced on December 20, 2023 that more than 50 million PS5 units had been sold through to consumers, three years after the console’s November 2020 launch. Jim Ryan, then President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, said in that announcement: “Achieving this PS5 sales milestone is a testament to the unwavering support of the global PlayStation community and their passion for the incredible experiences created by the talented developers from PlayStation Studios and our partners,”

What do these totals say about PlayStation’s business?
Console totals provide one measure of scale, but Sony’s PlayStation business also includes games, subscriptions and peripherals. In its Corporate Report 2024, Sony reported 116 million monthly active users across PS4 and PS5 as of June 30, 2024, and said more than half of PlayStation players were PlayStation Plus subscribers. Those are company-reported figures with their own dates and populations; they are not additional PS5 sales counts.
High cumulative sales alone do not establish why consumers bought the console, how well a particular game or accessory performs, or whether a PS5 is the right purchase for an individual. The figures describe reported unit movement and platform reach, not product quality or a personal buying recommendation.
