Published Meta materials from 2024 even conflict on the Gifts threshold, so check your account’s current eligibility in Instagram’s Professional Dashboard rather than treating an old number as a promise.

These routes are different: being eligible to use a feature does not ensure that anyone sends a Gift, subscribes, hires you, or generates a bonus. Meta does not publish a universal follower count that guarantees income.
How many followers do Instagram Gifts require?
Meta’s April 3, 2024 update said creators needed at least 5,000 followers for Gifts, along with a professional account, age 18 or older, and compliance with Partner Monetization Policies. Gifts let fans support creators with virtual gifts purchased using Stars. Meta’s announcement gives that 5,000-follower figure.
But another Meta-published source gives a different number. A presentation for the South African Competition Commission’s public hearing on March 27, 2024 listed Gifts at 500 followers, age 18+, and acceptance of Gifts terms. The presentation conflicts with the later 5,000-follower figure; the cited material does not establish why the thresholds differ or which one applies to a particular account today.

So, can you get paid on Instagram with 500 followers? The 2024 presentation shows that 500 was a published Gifts threshold in that specific source, but it is not enough to conclude that your account currently qualifies. Check the Gifts section of your Professional Dashboard for the eligibility shown to you.
How many followers do you need for Instagram Subscriptions?
The March 27, 2024 Meta presentation listed 10,000 followers for Subscriptions, alongside an age requirement of 18+ and subscription creator terms. That is a dated published example, not independent confirmation of today’s eligibility rule. Meta’s April 2024 announcement said Subscriptions had expanded to more creators and described recurring subscriber income, but the passage does not state a follower threshold. Subscriptions are a separate option from Gifts: creators offer subscriber content in exchange for recurring payments. A follower count alone does not confirm that Subscriptions are available to you; use the Professional Dashboard to check account-level access.
Can you make money from brand deals with a small following?
There is no universal follower threshold for a brand deal in the cited sources. A business negotiates directly with creators it chooses, so follower count is not a single platform-set gate like a stated program threshold. Meta describes creators working with brand partners on branded content and Partnership Ads; its help description says the brand pays the creator off-platform for content used as a Partnership Ad. A smaller account may pursue a deal, but the available evidence does not establish a minimum audience or guarantee that a brand will offer one.

Disclosure still matters regardless of audience size. Meta says a paid post, a post featuring a free or loaned product, and affiliate-link content count as an exchange of value and require the Paid partnership label. For affiliate links, Meta says to use the label even if you do not tag a business partner. Read Meta’s branded-content guidance before posting.

No general follower threshold or dependable open-to-everyone bonus is established by the cited sources. Meta’s April 3, 2024 update described a seasonal bonus based on Reels plays and photo views that was invite-only and limited at that point to creators in the United States, South Korea, and Japan. That is evidence of a historical, restricted program—not a current offer to all creators or a reason to expect earnings at a particular follower count. Meta’s update is available in its announcement.

How to check what your account can use
- Open Instagram and go to your profile.
- Open the Professional Dashboard.
- Review the monetization tools and eligibility or policy-status information displayed for your account.
- Check the specific feature—such as Gifts or Subscriptions—rather than assuming eligibility for one tool means eligibility for another.
- If an option is unavailable, use the dashboard’s status information to identify whether the issue is eligibility, policy compliance, or availability for your account.
Meta’s cited materials do not establish current country lists or individual account status. The dashboard is the practical place to verify what Instagram currently offers your account.
What a follower threshold does—and does not—mean
A threshold, when one applies, is an eligibility condition for a possible monetization feature, not a promise of payment. Gifts require fans to send them; Subscriptions require people to subscribe; a brand deal requires a brand willing to work with you. The sources cited here do not establish typical earnings or a payout amount, so a follower count cannot be translated into a reliable income estimate.
