Americans purchase approximately 6.5 billion greeting cards a year, according to an estimate published by the Greeting Card Association (GCA) in 2020. That is a historical estimate of purchases—not a verified 2026 total, and not a count of cards mailed. The distinction matters: the GCA also reported a much smaller USPS delivery figure for an earlier year.
How many greeting cards are bought and mailed in the United States?
The best-known annual U.S. total is approximately 6.5 billion greeting cards purchased, based on the GCA’s 2020 fact sheet. The document also estimated annual retail sales at $7–8 billion. Both are industry estimates published in 2020, not current-year measurements. GCA 2020 fact sheet
For a count of cards delivered through the U.S. Postal Service, the GCA fact sheet presents USPS figures totaling 2.321 billion greeting cards in fiscal year 2018: 1.332 billion holiday cards and 989 million non-holiday cards. The publisher-revenue figure is a different kind of statistic from card purchases or retail spending. The FRED series identifies the U.S. Census Bureau’s Service Annual Survey as its source and covers greeting-card publisher employer firms. It should not be treated as either the number of cards bought or the total consumers spend at retail.

Why aren’t purchases and USPS deliveries the same number?
The GCA’s fact sheet says industry research at the time estimated that roughly half of purchased cards were mailed to recipients. It also describes cards being delivered by hand, enclosed in packages, or sent through carriers other than USPS. That historical explanation helps account for why the purchase estimate is higher than USPS deliveries, but it does not establish today’s share of cards mailed.
Which occasions account for the most cards?
The GCA’s 2020 fact sheet identifies birthdays as the leading everyday card occasion and Christmas as the leading seasonal occasion. Its occasion figures are historical estimates, not current-year counts.

The GCA fact sheet says nine in ten households buy greeting cards yearly. It gives a historical retail price range of 50 cents to more than $10, with most cards priced between $2 and $5. The fact sheet associates higher prices with features such as intricate designs, special techniques, sound chips, LED lights, and handmade construction. These are category-level figures from the 2020 document, not current prices or product rankings.
