Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) lists 588 licensed, production-oriented aquaculture facilities in British Columbia when three facility categories are added together: marine finfish, shellfish and land-based. That is a calculated sum of map counts with different data dates—not a single official total, and not a count of farms currently operating.
What does the 588 figure include?
DFO’s Pacific Region aquaculture maps show these licensed facility counts:

The total counts licensed locations in those three production-oriented categories. A licensed site is not necessarily operating, and the figures count facilities—not companies or operators. Because the category counts have different reference dates, 588 should not be described as a consolidated count for one date.
How many marine finfish farms were active?
DFO reported 46 active marine finfish farms in 2023. This is a narrower, time-specific operating count, not a contradiction of the larger licensed-site inventory. In its 2019 marine finfish reporting, DFO defined an active farm as a site with at least three full pens of fish for at least 30 days of a calendar quarter. The threshold applies to that activity measure; it should not be treated as a definition of every kind of fish farm.

Why might a broader aquaculture count be higher?
DFO lists some facilities separately from the three categories used for the 588 production-oriented-site sum:

- Shellfish hatcheries: 10, with map data dated September 4, 2025. These are distinct from shellfish grow-out facilities.
- Enhancement facilities: 125, with map data dated January 6, 2025. This category includes salmon enhancement and recreational stocking operations, which are not necessarily commercial food-production farms.
Land-based aquaculture is also its own map category and can include hatcheries. Since these categories can serve different purposes and their map dates differ, adding them to 588 would produce a broader licensing inventory, not a same-date count of commercial fish farms.
Does production volume tell you how many farms there are?
No. Production measures output, while facility counts measure locations and operating counts apply a separate status definition. DFO’s production statistics, which report Statistics Canada data, put British Columbia’s 2024 aquaculture output at 64,154 tonnes, including just under 55,000 tonnes of salmon. How to compare fish-farm counts
When two figures differ, check what each one measures before treating them as inconsistent:
- Geography: British Columbia or another region.
- Facility type: marine finfish, shellfish, land-based, enhancement or hatchery.
- Status: licensed facilities or farms meeting an active-operation threshold.
- Reference date: a map-data date or reporting year.
- Unit: individual sites or companies and operators.
