What Phoenix Labs said about the layoffs
In a statement reproduced by Gematsu, Phoenix Labs called the decision “unfortunate but necessary changes to our operations” and said it would part ways with “the majority of the studio.” The company thanked affected staff and said its immediate focus was supporting them through the transition.

The statement did not name a speaker or explain the operational reasons in more detail. It also did not say how many people were affected. GeekWire reported the announcement on January 27, 2025, and noted that no exact layoff count had been announced: GeekWire’s report.
Why there is no confirmed layoff total
The phrase “majority of the studio” describes the scale in the company’s own terms; it is not an exact count or a stated percentage. GeekWire separately cited a LinkedIn-based estimate that Phoenix Labs had around 90 employees. That estimate describes company size, not the number laid off, so it cannot be used to calculate a confirmed total.

Coverage of Phoenix Labs’ May 2024 restructuring also circulated estimates of affected staff, but those were not company-confirmed totals. They refer to a separate earlier round and should not be combined with or substituted for a count of the January 2025 layoffs. PocketGamer.biz and Game Informer covered that restructuring and project cancellations.
What the announcement meant for Dauntless and Fae Farm
Phoenix Labs said it would share more details in the coming weeks about what the changes meant for Dauntless and Fae Farm. The January statement did not itself announce a specific change to either game. GameSpot lists Fae Farm for Nintendo Switch among other platforms: GameSpot’s game listing.

Later update: Phoenix Labs and Fae Farm in August 2025
A separate development came on August 12, 2025. PC Gamer reported that a Forte representative said Phoenix Labs had not ceased operations. The same report said Fae Farm multiplayer support was being discontinued and described a Steam notice stating the game would remain playable offline but receive no further updates.
