The studio gave that milestone in a statement dated July 17, 2026, but did not publish an exact lifetime total. The often-cited figure of roughly 12 million refers to the game’s 2015 launch announcement, not its total sales.
What is Fallout 4’s latest reported sales figure?
Bethesda Game Studios said on July 17, 2026, that Fallout 4 had “recently passed over 35 million copies sold.” That wording establishes a threshold: the game had sold more than 35 million copies, but Bethesda did not say how far above that mark it was. Bethesda’s studio note is the latest official lifetime-sales figure identified here.

So the precise answer is over 35 million copies, not exactly 35 million. The statement does not break the figure down by platform, edition, region, or digital versus physical sales.
Does the 12 million figure mean 12 million copies sold?
No. In its November 13, 2015 launch announcement, Bethesda Softworks said it had shipped approximately 12 million units worldwide to meet day-one demand. The announcement also described strong store and digital sales and said more units were being shipped to retailers, but it did not establish that all 12 million units had already been bought by consumers. Bethesda’s announcement and contemporary coverage distinguish the launch supply figure from a confirmed consumer sell-through count.

The same 2015 announcement cited more than $750 million in sales value. That was part of the launch announcement, not a statement of Fallout 4’s lifetime revenue.
How the launch and lifetime figures differ
| Figure | What it measures | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Approximately 12 million units worldwide, announced November 13, 2015 | Units Bethesda said it had shipped to meet day-one demand | That 12 million consumers had bought copies, or the game’s lifetime sales |
| Over 35 million copies, stated July 17, 2026 | A Bethesda Game Studios lifetime-sales threshold | An exact total, or a breakdown by platform, edition, region, or format |
What about comparisons with Skyrim?
In 2017, Bethesda marketing executive Pete Hines said Fallout 4 had sold more copies than Skyrim “over the same period.” That is a comparison of the games’ sales over a matched time frame, not a claim that Fallout 4 had surpassed Skyrim’s lifetime total. GameSpot’s report covered the comparison and Hines’ clarification.

What the reported total does—and doesn’t—tell you
The over-35-million milestone is a unit-sales figure, not a revenue figure or a count of people currently playing. The available statement does not separate original and Anniversary Edition sales or identify how many copies were sold on any one platform. Bethesda announced the Anniversary Edition for digital availability on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC, PlayStation 5, and PlayStation 4; its announcement does not verify current physical retail availability. Bethesda’s Anniversary Edition announcement describes the edition as including the base game and six official add-ons.
Concurrent-player counts, launch shipments, revenue, and period-matched comparisons cannot be used to calculate a more exact current lifetime unit total. Bethesda has not stated one in the cited July 2026 update.
