Take-Two Interactive says Grand Theft Auto V has sold-in over 230 million units worldwide, according to its August 2026 investor presentation. That is the company’s latest reported milestone—not a precise count of copies bought by individual players.
What does “over 230 million” mean?
Take-Two’s August 2026 investor presentation uses the term “sold-in.” The company’s public financial materials distinguish products “sold digitally” from those “sold-in physically”; Rockstar Report explains that sell-in can include units sold to retailers as well as digital sales. The total should therefore be described using Take-Two’s wording, rather than as 230 million confirmed end-user purchases.
The presentation also says GTA V has been released across three console generations. The figure is cumulative across the title’s long release history; Take-Two does not break out the total by platform or edition in this milestone.

The wording matters: “nearly 230 million” was the earlier May update, while “over 230 million” is the later August milestone. Take-Two’s August deck also reports nearly 475 million units for the entire Grand Theft Auto franchise; that franchise figure is not a GTA V total.

A company-stated sales record
Take-Two’s August presentation says GTA V surpassed $1 billion in retail sales faster than any entertainment release in history. This is the company’s historical comparison; the presentation does not provide a methodology or independent validation alongside the claim.
A U.S. sales ranking with a defined period
The same presentation, citing Circana, LLC’s U.S. Video Games Retail Tracking Service, calls GTA V the best-selling U.S. title of the past ten years by both units and dollar sales for January 2016 through December 2025. This ranking is limited to the United States and that stated period.

GTA Online is related, but the unit total is not a player count
Take-Two describes GTA Online as free with every copy of GTA V and notes that a standalone version launched on March 15, 2022. The sales milestone does not reveal how many copies are currently active, how many people play online, or how many standalone players there are.
What the milestone does—and does not—say about revenue
Take-Two’s May 21, 2026 results release listed both Grand Theft Auto Online and Grand Theft Auto V among the largest contributors to fiscal fourth-quarter net bookings and revenue. Its definition of net bookings includes products and services sold digitally or physically, as well as licensing fees, merchandise, in-game advertising, strategy guides, and publisher incentives. Those company-wide disclosures do not isolate revenue attributable to GTA V.

Take-Two’s August 7, 2026 release likewise named the Grand Theft Auto series among the largest contributors to first-quarter fiscal 2027 net bookings and revenue. That quarter ended June 30, 2026, and the release did not provide a separate GTA V unit-sales total. The over-230-million milestone comes from the August investor presentation.

A headline reporting 205 million reflects an earlier milestone, not Take-Two’s latest figure in its August 2026 investor presentation. For a current answer, use the newer “over 230 million units sold-in” wording and keep the distinction between the single game and the broader franchise clear.
