Virgin Australia reported six new Boeing 737 MAX 8 deliveries during financial year 2024 (FY24). That is the airline’s reported financial-year total—not a confirmed count for the calendar year from January to December 2024. In November 2023, the airline had forecast that 11 remaining MAX 8s would arrive throughout 2024, at a pace of nearly one per month.
What Virgin Australia forecast for 2024
On 24 November 2023, Virgin Australia said it had increased its Boeing 737 MAX 8 pipeline by six aircraft. It expected the 11 remaining MAX 8s to arrive through 2024, nearly one per month. The airline said its MAX 8 fleet would reach 14 and its total planned latest-generation aircraft count would reach 39. Those figures described the plan at the time, not a subsequent delivery tally. What the airline reported it delivered
In its FY24 results, released on 14 October 2024, Virgin Australia reported six new Boeing 737 MAX 8 deliveries during the financial year. The same results separately recorded 14 Boeing 737-800 aircraft reconfigured with new-generation interiors. New MAX 8 deliveries and reconfigured 737-800s are different parts of fleet renewal; the 14 reconfigured aircraft were not additional MAX 8 deliveries. Virgin Australia’s FY24 results.
Why FY24 is not the same as calendar 2024
The six-aircraft figure is explicitly an FY24 result. It should not be presented as the confirmed number delivered between 1 January and 31 December 2024: the cited results do not give that calendar-year tally. The 11-aircraft figure, meanwhile, was a forecast announced in November 2023. Comparing the figures shows the difference between the plan and the later reported financial-year result, but their reporting periods and basis are not identical.

What the fleet and route updates add
In a July 2024 route announcement, Virgin Australia said it had seven MAX 8s and expected an eighth in August. It also said its Cairns–Tokyo Haneda service would end from 24 February 2025 and that the aircraft operating it would move to domestic routes. This was a dated fleet snapshot and a plan for that route, not a current schedule or a replacement for the FY24 delivery figure. Virgin Australia’s July 2024 route announcement.

Virgin Australia’s FY24 sustainability report describes the MAX 8 as approximately 15% more fuel efficient than older-generation 737s. That is the airline’s comparison, not an independently established measurement here. The same report says the company’s FY24 Scope 1 and 2 emissions intensity was 6% below its 2019 base year. The aircraft-efficiency comparison and the company-wide emissions-intensity figure have different benchmarks and scopes, so one does not establish the other.
