How Many Bitcoins Are There? Maximum Supply vs. Current Supply

Bitcoin’s 21 million maximum is not the same as the amount already issued. Here’s the dated supply figure, how halvings slow issuance, and why lost coins still count.

Bitcoin has a maximum supply of 21 million BTC. About 20.09 million had been issued by September 25, 2026, according to a dated tracker snapshot. Those figures describe different things: the first is the long-run cap, while the second is the amount created by that date.

Bitcoin’s maximum, issued, and spendable supply

“How many bitcoins are there?” can mean the number that can ever exist, the number already created, or the number people can currently spend. These are not interchangeable.

  • Maximum supply: Bitcoin.org says issuance will eventually stop at 21 million bitcoins. This is the commonly stated long-run cap, not the amount already in circulation. Bitcoin.org’s FAQ describes the limit.
  • Issued supply: Bitcoin Supply Check recorded 20,089,079.25231719 BTC on September 25, 2026, at 19:06:11 UTC—about 20.09 million. The tracker says its data is generated using Bitcoin Core 31.1’s gettxoutsetinfo. This is a dated measurement, not a live count for October 4, 2026. Bitcoin Supply Check
  • Spendable supply: The amount whose owners can access the private keys needed to spend it is not reliably known. Lost coins remain recorded on the blockchain, but inaccessible keys can make them effectively dormant. Bitcoin.org explains this distinction but does not provide a reliable total of lost bitcoins.

Why the issued total keeps changing

New bitcoins enter the supply as a block subsidy paid to miners. The subsidy declines in steps rather than at a constant rate: it is halved every 210,000 blocks, approximately every four years. A 2026 U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filing describes the reward as 3.125 BTC per block at the time of that filing. That figure is a dated description; future block rewards will change at later halvings. SEC filing

Bitcoin.org says issuance will eventually halt once the total reaches 21 million. The supply snapshot is therefore expected to grow as blocks are mined, but at a declining pace.

Why lost bitcoins do not reduce the issued total

A bitcoin that cannot be spent because its owner has lost the necessary private keys was still issued. It remains part of the blockchain’s history and is included in the issued supply, even if no one can access it. Bitcoin.org puts it plainly: “Lost bitcoins still remain in the blockchain just like any other bitcoins.”

The tracker’s September 25, 2026 snapshot identified 230.12268281 BTC as unspendable within its reported total. That tracker category is not a complete estimate of all economically lost coins: there is no reliable count of every bitcoin whose keys are permanently inaccessible.

Bitcoin can be divided into smaller units

A 21-million-BTC cap does not mean Bitcoin is limited to 21 million individual payments or that a person must buy one whole bitcoin. Bitcoin.org says a bitcoin is divisible to eight decimal places: one bitcoin equals 100,000,000 satoshis. Smaller units allow people to transact with fractions of a bitcoin.
