Grimmway Farms recalled select organic whole and baby carrots over possible E. coli O121:H19 contamination. The FDA says the outbreak investigation is complete and the recalled products are no longer for sale in stores, but they may still be in home refrigerators or freezers. Check the brand, product type, bag size and date information below before deciding what to do.
Which carrots were recalled?
The voluntary recall covered select Grimmway Farms organic whole carrots and organic baby carrots. The FDA’s notice lists affected labels including 365, Bunny Luv, Cal-Organic, Compliments, Full Circle, Good & Gather, GreenWise, Marketside, Nature’s Promise, O-Organics, President’s Choice, Simple Truth, Trader Joe’s, Wegmans and Wholesome Pantry. Not every product under those labels was included: match the specific bag size and date details against the FDA’s complete recall notice.
| Product | How it was identified | Relevant dates |
|---|---|---|
| Select organic whole carrots | Check affected brand and bag size in the FDA notice. The bags had no best-if-used-by date. | Sold at retail from August 14 through October 23, 2024. |
| Select organic baby carrots | Check affected brand and bag size in the FDA notice, along with the date printed on the bag. | Best-if-used-by dates from September 11 through November 12, 2024. |
The FDA expanded the notice on November 21, 2024, to add certain whole-carrot bag sizes; the date ranges did not change. The outbreak investigation also notes that other products using or repackaging affected carrots were recalled, so its list is broader than the original Grimmway bag list. See the FDA outbreak investigation page if you have a product that may contain or repackage these carrots.
Were Costco carrots part of the recall?
The official Grimmway recall notice names Walmart labels Marketside and Good & Gather, among other brands, but it does not name Costco or a Costco brand. The reviewed official materials do not confirm which Costco product, if any, is meant by the Costco reference in the headline. Do not assume a Costco bag was affected—or unaffected—based on the store name alone. Compare its label and product details with the FDA notice, and contact the retailer or manufacturer if you cannot identify it.

Walmart says its recall resource links to manufacturer and regulatory notices and that its recall list is not all-inclusive. Costco also maintains a past recall-notice archive. These are places to check for retailer information, not confirmation that a particular Costco product was included in this Grimmway recall.
How to check a bag at home
- Look for the product form: organic whole carrots or organic baby carrots. The original recall covered select versions, not all carrots.
- Match the brand and bag size to the full list in the FDA recall notice.
- For baby carrots, compare the best-if-used-by date with September 11 through November 12, 2024. For whole carrots, use the August 14–October 23, 2024 retail sale window; the bags did not have a best-if-used-by date.
- If the product is not clearly identifiable, do not treat its appearance as proof that it is safe. Check the FDA outbreak page and contact the retailer or manufacturer for help identifying it.
What should you do with recalled carrots?
If you find a product that matches the recall, discard it. The FDA says the recalled products are no longer available in stores, but carrots can remain in refrigerators or freezers after a recall ends; check both places. Follow any handling or cleanup directions in the official notice, particularly if the carrots or their packaging may have contacted food-preparation surfaces.

What illness was the recall intended to prevent?
The concern was Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli O121:H19. The FDA’s investigation linked the outbreak to Grimmway Farms organic whole and baby carrots. Of 27 people interviewed in that investigation, 26 (96%) reported eating carrots; that is a finding among those interviewed, not a general estimate of an individual’s risk.
The recall notice lists possible symptoms including severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, fever, nausea and vomiting. Its November 2024 notice says symptoms may begin 24 hours to as many as ten days after exposure, with an average of three to four days. The FDA’s later completed-investigation page summarizes symptom onset as a few days to nine days after consumption. Some infections can cause severe bloody diarrhea and complications including hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a form of kidney failure, as well as high blood pressure, chronic kidney disease and neurologic problems. If you are concerned about symptoms after eating a potentially affected product, contact a healthcare professional.
