What did the 2026 WalletHub survey find?
In WalletHub’s full response table, 81% of respondents said tipping had gotten out of control. The figure is the survey’s reported result for that question; it is not the same as the “nearly nine in 10” description used in some coverage.
Other responses point to why tipping practices may frustrate customers:

These are respondents’ reported views, not measurements of how employers set wages or how customers behave in every transaction. WalletHub notes that percentages may not total 100% because of rounding.

Why does the headline say “9 in 10”?
Fox News described the 2026 result as “nearly nine in 10,” while WalletHub’s primary report lists 81% for the corresponding response. For the precise 2026 figure, the primary report’s full table is the clearest reference: WalletHub’s 2026 tipping survey. Fox News’s account is secondary coverage: Fox News report.
A separate WalletHub tipping guide published June 27, 2025 also used “nearly 9 out of 10” wording. That earlier statement should not be substituted for the 2026 table result or treated as a directly comparable trend point: the reviewed sources do not establish equivalent question wording, sampling or timing. The 2025 guide also summarizes a 2023 Pew Research Center finding that about seven in 10 people believed tipping was expected in more places than a few years earlier. How representative is the poll?
WalletHub says the study was an online survey of over 200 respondents and that responses were normalized by gender and income to reflect U.S. demographics. The public report does not state the exact respondent count, fieldwork dates, recruitment method or detailed weighting procedures. Those limits make it unwise to treat the percentages as highly precise estimates of all Americans’ views, even though WalletHub describes the sample as nationally representative.
The findings are best read as a snapshot of the surveyed respondents’ opinions. They do not, on their own, establish how often tipping screens appear nationwide, whether employers are actually reducing wages, or how much customers tip in practice.

What can customers do when a tip screen appears?
A screen offering tip amounts is a request, not proof that a tip is required. Fox News quoted etiquette consultant Jules Hirst saying, “Not every exchange requires gratuity.” The decision can depend on the service, local norms and whether a gratuity has already been added; the survey itself does not set tipping rules.
For U.S. service contexts, WalletHub’s 2025 guide recommends 15%–20% for sit-down restaurant servers and food delivery. It says tipping is usually not expected for takeout or a coffee-shop order, though a tip may be worth considering for a large or complex order. For a large restaurant party, it advises checking whether gratuity is already included. These are the guide’s recommendations, not legal requirements or results from the 2026 survey.

What the findings say about tipping pressure
WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo told Fox News: “Now, it’s everywhere you look. That’s part of the frustration, because people are at a point where they don’t know who to tip and how much to tip.” That is Lupo’s commentary, not a separate survey statistic. The poll’s 55% response about social pressure and 20% response about tip screens offer related evidence about how some respondents experience the choice, but they do not explain every person’s decision.
