The best-known figure is 1,061 C919 orders reported for September 2023; a separate secondary source later cited 380 C909 aircraft on order. Those figures have different dates and provenance, so they should not be added and presented as COMAC’s current total.
What the published figures show
The U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission’s 2025 report says COMAC reported 1,061 C919 orders in September 2023, citing Chinese state media. It is a dated order headline, not a current, audited count of firm orders across COMAC’s aircraft programs. The commission also notes that GallopAir’s previously announced C919 orders were not confirmed in a later report it cited. Read the commission’s report.
The same report cites Travel and Tour World for 380 C909 aircraft on order, with the figure attributed to 2025. This is a secondary estimate, not a COMAC disclosure of a reconciled firm backlog. The sources do not establish whether it includes options, intentions, or other kinds of commitments. Read the Travel and Tour World report.
Why the figures do not add up to a current total
COMAC’s February 3, 2026 Singapore Airshow announcement said the C909 and C919 programs had delivered more than 200 aircraft combined. That is a delivery figure, not the number of aircraft still on order. It cannot be subtracted from the 1,061 or 380 headlines to calculate a current backlog: the figures have different dates and scopes, and the order headlines do not establish a consistent treatment of firm orders, options, and intentions. COMAC announcements illustrate why commitment categories matter. In November 2024, the company described Hainan Airlines Group’s purchase of 60 C919s and 40 C909s as confirmed orders. A separate deal announced that month for Colorful Guizhou Airlines comprised 20 confirmed C909 orders and 10 letters of intent. In February 2026, a C909 firefighting aircraft deal comprised three confirmed orders and three intentions. These categories should not be combined as if they were all firm orders.
- COMAC: Hainan Airlines Group orders, November 12, 2024
- COMAC: Colorful Guizhou Airlines agreement, November 12, 2024
- COMAC: C909 firefighting aircraft deal, February 2026
What counts as an aircraft on order?
A confirmed order is different from a letter of intent, an option, or an announcement whose terms have not been confirmed. The distinction matters when comparing announcements or compiling a backlog: including non-binding intentions alongside confirmed aircraft would inflate the apparent firm-order count.

COMAC renamed the ARJ21 as the C909 in November 2024. The C909 name therefore refers to the program formerly known as ARJ21; do not count ARJ21 and C909 as separate aircraft families. COMAC said 150 C909 aircraft had been delivered by the time of the renaming announcement. Read COMAC’s renaming announcement.

In July 2026, China’s Civil Aviation Administration reported that Air Cambodia had signed an agreement to purchase 20 C909 jets, with the first batch scheduled for the second half of 2026. The report does not clarify whether any part of the agreement is an option, and it does not provide COMAC’s overall backlog. Read the CAAC report.
