Luca Schnetzler—also known as Luca Netz—has aimed to grow Pudgy Penguins from a digital collectible project into a character-led consumer business. Its strategy links NFT-associated characters and community participation with licensed products, physical toys, retail distribution and online experiences. The clearest example is a toy designed to work as both a conventional purchase and, at launch, a possible entry point to Pudgy’s digital world. That is a business strategy, not proof that digital collectibles have achieved mass adoption.
How did the concept evolve?
The Pudgy Penguins collection began in 2021. Schnetzler acquired the project in 2022, according to TechCrunch’s 2023 account. The collection’s 8,888 NFTs were created in July 2021, as described by OpenSea.
Rather than relying only on NFT trading, the company set out to build a broader intellectual-property business around the characters. In a May 2023 License Global interview, Schnetzler described creating content and products as a conventional IP company would, with blockchain technology added to the model. That vision makes physical commerce central: toys and other licensed goods can introduce the characters to people who may never shop for an NFT.
How do toys connect physical shopping to digital products?
The first Pudgy Toys launch, reported by TechCrunch in May 2023, included 16 licensed SKUs inspired by NFTs in the original collection. The article described an initial plan for about 100,000 toys, priced at $5 to $35 at launch; those were launch-era plans and prices, not current inventory or pricing.

In OpenSea’s June 2023 interview, the toy experience included QR codes that could grant access to Pudgy World and related digital items. Schnetzler described the intended ease of that connection again in a November 2024 Brave podcast interview: a toy purchase could unlock NFTs through a web-style experience. These accounts explain the company’s design at those dates; they do not establish that every current product includes an unlock or that every past code remains redeemable.
The commercial loop works in both directions. NFT-associated characters and holders supply designs and a community with which to gather feedback. Physical products can reach shoppers through familiar retail and gift channels. A digital experience can then offer an additional step to buyers who want one. The company’s stated approach is to distribute character IP across online and offline settings, rather than make NFT trading the only route to the brand.

Where have Pudgy products been sold?
Retail figures are snapshots, not a current directory of stockists. Axios reported in February 2024 that Walmart distribution had grown from 2,000 to 3,100 stores. That report also described a promotion with 30 new toys priced from $2.99 to $11.97. The numbers describe that promotion and period; they should not be read as today’s Walmart assortment or prices.
In the November 2024 Brave interview, Schnetzler said Pudgy had expanded to retailers including Target, Hot Topic, Smith’s and Big W, and cited approximately 10,000 retail doors. That was an executive-reported figure in a podcast, not an independently audited current distribution count. OpenSea reported the initial toy launch on Amazon in May 2023, but that does not confirm that a particular listing or seller is still available.

How do NFT holders participate or earn?
In the 2023 License Global interview, Schnetzler said characters associated with NFT holders were being licensed into products and that holders helped inform product selection and community feedback. TechCrunch’s 2023 launch coverage likewise described licensed characters and royalties for holders when toys sold. In the 2024 Brave interview, Schnetzler also said licensed NFT holders received royalties.

These are descriptions of the company’s licensing model from those interviews, not evidence that every current Pudgy product uses the same arrangement. A buyer should not assume that owning an NFT automatically grants commercial rights, or that every product sale generates a royalty for a holder; the applicable rights and terms depend on the relevant license and product.

In a separate interview, Netz described a business spanning digital products, toys and collectibles, licensing, social content, film and television, and gaming. That is his description of the company’s intended verticals, not evidence that they are equally developed or contribute equally to revenue. The underlying bet is that recognizable characters can support multiple kinds of products and experiences over time.

The company also maintains direct routes for creators and potential commercial partners. Its creator program invites active creators to apply; accepted participants may promote products and earn commission on qualifying sales through approved channels. The public page does not state a full commission schedule or guarantee acceptance. The licensing and partner page invites inquiries across categories including toys, apparel, food, hospitality and entertainment. It does not establish that a particular deal exists.
What does the model show—and what does it not?
Pudgy Penguins illustrates one way a digital-native character brand can pursue consumer commerce: use licensed IP and community relationships to develop products, put those products into ordinary shopping channels, and offer a digital experience as an optional continuation. For readers assessing the business, useful questions include who owns or licenses each character, whether a product has a working digital unlock, how community members participate, and which activities generate repeat sales.
Launch-era sales reports and retail counts should be interpreted with their dates and sources attached. OpenSea reported more than 20,000 toys sold and over $500,000 in sales in the first few days of the 2023 launch; that is a launch-period report, not an audited lifetime sales total. Neither that figure nor store-door counts alone establish continuing demand, profitability or the financial contribution of NFTs relative to physical products.
