You do not have to wait a fixed number of days after joining a new job to start an EPF transfer. For qualifying accounts, EPFO’s automatic-transfer procedure starts from the new employer’s Form 11 declaration. The transfer is completed only after the member’s 10-day opportunity to stop it has passed and the new employer’s first contribution has been deposited and reconciled. The separate two-month rule applies when a member needs to update the previous job’s date of exit for an online transfer claim; it is not a universal waiting period for every transfer.
What the waiting periods actually mean
There are three different milestones that are easy to confuse: joining the new employer, initiating a transfer, and seeing the transfer completed in the account. Joining does not itself mean the old balance has moved. In an eligible automatic transfer, the new employer’s declaration in Form 11 triggers the process; EPFO’s 2017 revised procedure then gives the member 10 days from the notification to stop a proposed transfer. That window is not a guaranteed end-to-end processing estimate. Completion also depends on the new employer’s first contribution being deposited and reconciled.

The two-month figure concerns a different task. EPFO’s 2020 transfer FAQ says that a member can update the previous employment’s date of exit only after two months from leaving that job. That date is mandatory for a member-filed online transfer claim. If the date is already recorded, the member does not need to wait two months merely because they have joined a new employer.

EPFO’s reviewed material does not specify one universal number of days from joining to final transfer credit. A member should use the account’s status and passbook to confirm what has happened rather than count from their joining date or assume that the transfer is complete when the 10-day window ends.

Choose the route that fits your account
EPFO describes both automatic transfer on a change of employment and a member-filed online transfer claim. The right route depends on whether the existing UAN and employment details qualify for automatic transfer, and whether the previous job’s date of exit is present.
| Route | How it starts | Timing point | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Automatic transfer | For the procedure described by EPFO, the new employer’s Form 11 declaration triggers the transfer when the earlier UAN is Aadhaar-seeded and verified. | The member has 10 days after notification to stop the proposed transfer. Completion then requires the new employer’s first contribution to be deposited and reconciled. | Confirm the new employer has linked the existing UAN, watch for EPFO’s notification, and verify the account status or passbook. |
| Member-filed online claim | The member applies online; the previous employment’s date of exit is mandatory. | If the member must self-update that date, EPFO’s FAQ says to wait two months after leaving the previous job and meet the Aadhaar/OTP prerequisites. | Check whether the date of exit is already present before treating the two-month rule as relevant. |
EPFO’s 2017 eligibility circular describes conditions that include a verified Aadhaar associated with the UAN, previous employment details, and establishment conditions. Because that circular is older, it is useful procedural context, not a guarantee that every account configuration qualifies under the current portal. The more recent official parliamentary response confirms that automatic transfer remains a listed facility, but it does not set a universal completion deadline.
In the particular revised procedure for a qualifying account with a verified, Aadhaar-seeded earlier UAN, the new employer’s Form 11 declaration acts as the transfer request. EPFO says Form 13 is not required in that case. This is a route-specific exception, not a reason to assume that Form 13 is unnecessary in every account situation. If the automatic route does not apply and you need to file an online claim, check the requirements for that route, especially the previous employment’s date of exit.

What to do after joining the new employer
- Give the new employer your existing UAN. EPFO says the UAN is permanent and does not need to be obtained again when you change jobs. Make sure the employment declaration you provide is accurate. A new job is not a reason to start a second UAN.
- Check that the existing UAN is linked to the new employment. Ask the employer to confirm the linkage and declaration rather than assuming it happened on your first day. The automatic route described in EPFO’s revised procedure depends on the new employer declaring the transfer request through Form 11.
- Watch for the proposed-transfer notification. EPFO’s procedure gives you 10 days from the SMS notification to stop the proposed transfer if it is incorrect or unwanted. Use that opportunity if the employment linkage is wrong; do not treat the notification itself as proof that funds have already been credited.
- Allow the first new contribution to be deposited and reconciled. Under the cited procedure, the automatic transfer is not completed merely because the 10-day window expires. The new employer’s first contribution must also be deposited and reconciled.
- Verify the result in your EPFO member account and passbook. Check the individual account status for evidence of the transfer. Joining, UAN linking, receiving an SMS, or reaching day 10 are separate events and none alone establishes that the old balance has been credited.
These checks help distinguish a process that has not started from one that is still awaiting a required step. For example, if you have given the employer your UAN but the first contribution has not yet been deposited, the completion condition described by EPFO has not been met. If the contribution is deposited but the status does not show a completed transfer, confirm the individual account record rather than treating the contribution as proof of transfer credit.

If an automatic transfer does not start
First check whether your existing UAN is linked to the new employment and whether your previous employment details are recorded correctly. Automatic transfer is conditional, and the older EPFO circular’s eligibility factors do not establish that every member or establishment will qualify. If the automatic route is not initiated, a member-filed online transfer claim may be relevant.
Before applying, check whether the previous job’s date of exit is present. EPFO’s transfer FAQ calls it mandatory for an online transfer claim. If it is missing and you need to update it yourself, the FAQ says that you can do so only after two months have passed since leaving the previous job, subject to Aadhaar-based OTP prerequisites. This is when the two-month wait matters; it is not a blanket rule that postpones every transfer after a job change.
If an employment has been linked to your UAN in error, EPFO’s 2025 Executive Committee agenda notes that members can delink erroneous or fraudulent employment linkages. Review the employment record before proceeding with a transfer that appears to involve the wrong job. The agenda does not provide a universal processing time for delinking or transfer completion.

How long does the transfer take in total?
The official material reviewed does not give a single service-level deadline covering the whole period from joining a new job to the final transfer credit. The 10-day period is a member’s opportunity to stop a proposed automatic transfer; it is not a promise that the transfer will finish on day 11. Reconciliation of the first contribution is an additional completion condition, and the source does not state how long that reconciliation takes in every case.
EPFO’s July 2026 portal notice said services were live after a database consolidation and that some claims and service requests could take longer during an initial two-week stabilization period. That notice described conditions around the consolidation, not a standing estimate for all transfers. For an individual case, rely on the member portal and passbook rather than applying that temporary notice as a normal processing timetable.
Accordingly, there is no reliable universal countdown to use from your first day at work. The most useful milestones are procedural: whether the new employer has made the required declaration, whether you received a proposed-transfer notification and allowed its 10-day stop period to pass, and whether the first contribution has been deposited and reconciled. The account record is the way to confirm the result.
What EPFO’s published figures do—and do not—show
In its response to Lok Sabha Unstarred Question No. 1002 in 2024, EPFO stated that the automatic-transfer facility applied to employees who joined after 1 October 2016. That date describes the applicability stated in that response; it does not, by itself, establish that a particular member’s account meets all the conditions for automatic transfer.
Rank #4
EPFO’s 2025 Executive Committee agenda reported 4,96,661 automatic-transfer requests without member and employer action among 15,73,826 total transfer claims from 17 January to 18 February 2025, or 31.56% for that reporting period. Those figures show that such requests occurred at scale during that specific period. They are not a forecast of the chance that any one person’s transfer will be automatic, nor do they show how long an individual transfer will take.
Common timing mistakes
- Waiting two months just because you changed jobs: the two-month rule in EPFO’s FAQ is tied to a member self-updating the previous job’s date of exit, not the start of every transfer.
- Assuming a transfer is complete when the notification arrives: the notification begins the 10-day opportunity to stop the proposed transfer; completion also requires the first contribution to be deposited and reconciled.
- Assuming the new employer’s first contribution alone proves the old balance moved: verify the transfer in the member account or passbook.
- Filing an online claim without checking the exit date: EPFO says the previous employment’s date of exit is mandatory for that route.
- Assuming automatic transfer is guaranteed for every account: eligibility depends on account and employment conditions; EPFO’s older circular should not be read as a current guarantee for every configuration.
- Getting a new UAN just because you changed employers: EPFO says the UAN is permanent, so provide the existing one to the new employer.
- Reading a temporary portal notice as a normal service deadline: the July 2026 stabilization notice referred to a particular period after database consolidation, not a standing transfer timetable.
Sources and scope
The timing and process described here follow EPFO’s UAN member FAQ, its Revised Procedure for Transfer of Accounts dated 20 September 2017, its 2020 FAQ on transfer claims, its 2017 automatic-transfer circular, its 2024 parliamentary response, its 2025 Executive Committee agenda, and its July 2026 portal notice. These materials establish the distinctions between the automatic route, the member-filed claim route, and the two-month date-of-exit update condition. They do not establish a universal total processing deadline.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to transfer my EPF after changing jobs?
EPFO provides an automatic-transfer facility for qualifying change-of-employment cases. Give the new employer your existing permanent UAN and check the account status; do not assume the balance has moved simply because you joined or the UAN was linked.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIs EPF transfer automatic when I join a new company?
It can be automatic in qualifying cases. Under EPFO’s revised procedure, a verified Aadhaar-seeded earlier UAN and the new employer’s Form 11 declaration trigger the process. Eligibility depends on the account and employment details, so it is not guaranteed for every configuration.
Best Value
Do I have to wait two months to transfer my PF?
Not in every case. EPFO’s two-month condition concerns a member self-updating the previous job’s date of exit. That date is mandatory for a member-filed online transfer claim, but if it is already recorded, the two-month self-update wait is not a general barrier to starting a transfer.
When is an automatic EPF transfer complete?
In the procedure described by EPFO, the member’s 10-day opportunity to stop the proposed transfer must pass, and the new employer’s first contribution must be deposited and reconciled. Check your member account or passbook to verify the individual transfer; EPFO does not state one universal end-to-end completion deadline.
Do I need to file Form 13 for an automatic transfer?
EPFO’s revised procedure says Form 13 is not required in the described case where the earlier UAN is Aadhaar-seeded and verified and the new employer’s Form 11 declaration triggers auto-transfer. That exception should not be assumed to cover every route or account.

Do not assume the proposed transfer is correct. Review the employment record and use the 10-day stop opportunity if the proposed transfer is incorrect or unwanted. EPFO’s 2025 Executive Committee agenda also notes that members can delink erroneous or fraudulent employment linkages.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: You generally do not need to wait two months after joining a new job to start an EPF transfer. That period applies when you need to self-update the previous job’s date of exit for an online claim. For a qualifying automatic transfer, watch for the notification, allow the 10-day stop window to pass, and remember that completion also depends on the new employer’s first contribution being deposited and reconciled. Confirm the credit in your member account or passbook; there is no universal total processing deadline.
