For the usual new-hire route to an FAA air traffic control job, expect several months at the FAA Academy in Oklahoma City, then about two to three more years of facility-specific classroom and on-the-job training before certification. The facility phase varies with the complexity of the assignment. Some graduates of approved Enhanced AT-CTI college programs may go directly to facility training after they are hired, but they still have to meet FAA selection and clearance requirements.
How long does FAA air traffic controller training take?
The FAA describes its standard sequence as several months at the Academy, followed by two to three additional years of training at the assigned facility. That local training combines classroom instruction with on-the-job experience, and successful completion leads to certification as a professional controller. The FAA’s 2026 workforce plan says full certification can take more than two years, depending on the facility’s complexity.
These are approximate training estimates, not a guaranteed end-to-end timeline. The FAA does not give one fixed Academy duration for every course and trainee, and the time needed at a facility varies. The estimate applies to FAA entry-level hiring and certification; it should not be generalized to military roles or other countries.
What are the stages of training?
1. FAA Academy training
For the standard entry-level route, training begins at the FAA Academy in Oklahoma City. The FAA describes this phase as lasting several months. Its published material does not establish a single total number of weeks that applies to every course or trainee.

2. Facility-specific training
After Academy graduation, trainees are assigned to locations around the country and continue with local classroom and on-the-job instruction. The FAA says this phase takes two to three years after the Academy; its 2026 workforce plan notes that full certification may take more than two years based on facility complexity. A trainee is not a certified professional controller simply because they have completed Academy training.
How do the college pathways affect the timeline?
AT-CTI is the FAA’s Air Traffic Collegiate Training Initiative. The effect of college training on the post-hire sequence depends on whether a graduate follows the traditional or Enhanced pathway.

Enhanced AT-CTI can remove Academy attendance from the post-hire sequence, but it is not an instant route to certification: the college coursework takes time, and facility qualification still follows. The FAA’s 2026 workforce plan lists 11 approved programs at 10 schools as of the end of FY2025.
Does hiring time count as training time?
No. Applying, being selected, and completing required medical and security checks happen before training, so they can extend the calendar time from application to certification without changing the training estimate. In its 2025 hiring-process description, the FAA said the updated process reduced processing time by more than four months in some descriptions. That figure refers to hiring-process time, not to a shorter Academy course or facility-training period.

What should you use as a planning estimate?
For the standard FAA route, plan for several months at the Academy plus roughly two to three years of facility training, with the understanding that facility complexity affects the path to certification. If you are considering an AT-CTI program, verify whether it is traditional or Enhanced: the former may waive the first five weeks of Academy qualification training, while the latter may allow direct entry to facility training after hire. In either case, distinguish the time spent in education and hiring from the training period itself.
