How Long Is a Manufacturer’s Warranty? What to Check

A manufacturer’s warranty has no universal term. Find the length and start date in the warranty for your exact product, then check its coverage and conditions.

There is no standard length for a manufacturer’s warranty: the term depends on the product and the written warranty that applies to it. To find out how long yours lasts, check the warranty for your exact product and market, including its start date, any separate limits for components, and whether the limit is measured in time, mileage, or another way. This guide covers U.S. federal rules; state law and the country where you bought the product can affect your rights.

How long does a manufacturer’s warranty last?

It lasts for the period or other limit stated in the warranty terms for that product. A warranty may specify a number of months or years, a mileage limit, or different terms for different parts. There is no universal duration that applies to all manufacturers or products. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) advises consumers to review the warranty’s length, coverage, remedy, and claims process: FTC: Warranties.

For a precise answer, you need the product and model, the country or state where it was purchased, the purchase date, and the warranty text that applied at that time. Federal rules require written warranty disclosures to state the duration or other measure of coverage and, if it differs from purchase, when coverage begins. That is a disclosure requirement—not a federal rule setting one warranty length for every product. See the FTC’s Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act rules.

When does the warranty clock start?

Check the terms rather than assuming coverage starts on the day you paid. The warranty may name purchase, delivery, installation, or another event as the start date. If the start event differs from purchase, federal disclosure rules call for it to be stated. Keep a dated receipt or other proof of purchase; it can help establish the relevant date and original ownership.

How to check your warranty’s actual length

  1. Identify the exact product. Note its model and the market or country for which it was sold. Similar models or versions sold in different markets may have different terms.
  2. Find the applicable warranty document. Check the paperwork supplied with the product or the manufacturer’s warranty information. Use the terms that applied when you bought it, not just a current page for a different model or purchase date.
  3. Locate the duration and start event. Look for the coverage period, any mileage or other limit, and the event that starts the clock. Check for separate terms covering components.
  4. Read the coverage conditions. Review which defects, parts, labor, shipping, and remedies are included, as well as exclusions and any maintenance or usage requirements.
  5. Check the claim procedure. Confirm whether you need registration or proof of purchase, where to request service, and what steps the warranty requires.
  6. Save the documents. Keep the warranty and receipt so you can refer to the terms and support the date of purchase if you make a claim.

Does the stated term mean every repair is covered?

No. Duration answers how long the written warranty may apply; the coverage terms determine which defects or repairs qualify. A warranty can have exclusions, conditions, or different limits for particular components. It may also specify whether the remedy is repair, replacement, or another option. Read those terms alongside the duration instead of treating the stated period as a promise to fix every problem.

What if you report a defect before the warranty expires?

The FTC says that if you report a defect during the warranty period and the product is not fixed properly, the company must correct the problem even if the warranty expires before the repair is completed. For details, see the FTC’s consumer guidance on warranties.

How a manufacturer’s warranty differs from other protections

Written manufacturer’s warranty

This is the manufacturer’s written promise, with the duration, coverage, exclusions, remedy, and claim process set out in its terms. In the United States, federal law does not require manufacturers or retailers to offer a written warranty on consumer products. When they do offer one, applicable rules govern what they must disclose. See the FTC’s Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act rules and its Businessperson’s Guide to Federal Warranty Law.

Implied warranties

Implied warranties are legal protections that may apply even when there is no written warranty. Their scope and availability depend on applicable law, including state rules; exceptions can include a valid “as is” notice where state law allows one. They are not a promise that a product will last for a particular number of years. The FTC explains that implied warranties concern the product’s condition when sold, not a guaranteed lifetime: FTC, Businessperson’s Guide to Federal Warranty Law. Federal law also restricts some suppliers from disclaiming or modifying implied warranties when they provide a written warranty or enter a qualifying service contract; see 15 U.S.C. § 2308.

Separately purchased service contracts

A service contract—sometimes marketed as an “extended warranty”—is sold separately from the product. It may overlap with the included warranty, so compare what repairs it covers, its term, price, deductibles, and claim steps before buying. It is not the same as the manufacturer’s included written warranty.

How to compare warranty terms on two products

Do not compare products by duration alone. Review the terms side by side, including:

  • Written duration, start event, and any mileage or other limit.
  • Coverage for parts, labor, and specific defects; exclusions and maintenance conditions.
  • Available remedy, such as repair or replacement, and any shipping or deductible costs.
  • Where and how to submit a claim, and whether registration or proof of purchase is required.
  • Whether coverage transfers to a later owner and what happens after a repair or replacement; check the wording rather than assuming.
  • Any overlap with a separately purchased service contract.

These distinctions help show whether a longer stated term actually offers more useful protection. The FTC also recommends checking the warranty’s length, limitations, remedy, and repair process before purchase.
