If an eligible U.S. shipment is at least one day late, you may be able to open a support ticket; that is an escalation option, not a lost-package declaration. If tracking says “delivered” but the package is missing, report it through FedEx’s missing-package process. For a U.S. lost or undelivered shipment, FedEx’s claims page sets a filing deadline of nine months from the shipment date—not a recommended waiting period.
What “lost” means in FedEx’s guidance
FedEx’s public guidance does not set a single waiting period that applies to every shipment. The right next step depends on what tracking shows, whether the package is actually missing or simply late, and the shipment’s region and service. Check the live tracking details for the current status and estimated delivery date before treating a delay as a loss.
A “delivery exception” is a temporary delay caused by unavoidable circumstances. FedEx says an exception does not necessarily mean the shipment will arrive late, so an exception scan alone is not proof that a package is lost. FedEx explains delivery exceptions and provides delivery visibility features such as an estimated date and, where available, a map view.
What to do based on the tracking status
It is still in transit or has an exception scan
If the estimated delivery date has not passed and tracking is updating, use the live estimate as your guide. An exception indicates a possible delay, not a formal loss finding. If the delivery date passes, check whether the tracking page offers a support option for your shipment.

It is at least one day late in the United States
For an eligible U.S. delayed package, FedEx says you can start a support ticket when it is delayed by at least one day. Look in the shipment’s tracking details and choose Manage Delivery if the support-ticket option is offered. FedEx says it will send case updates by SMS or email. The one-day threshold is when an eligible customer may seek support; it does not mean FedEx has declared the package lost. See FedEx’s delayed-package support guidance.
It says delivered, but you cannot find it
- Open the shipment’s tracking details and check for picture proof of delivery, if available.
- Check likely drop-off spots around the delivery address.
- In tracking details, select Manage Delivery, then Report Missing Package.
- Save the case number. FedEx says it will contact you to help locate the package.
Use this missing-package report for a package marked delivered but not found; it is distinct from a delayed-package support ticket. FedEx’s delivered-but-missing instructions describe the reporting route.

A missed delivery is being held for pickup
FedEx says it holds a package for up to seven days before returning it to the shipper. That is a pickup window, not a threshold for deciding that a shipment is lost. Check the tracking details or delivery notice for the applicable pickup instructions. FedEx’s hold guidance covers this situation.
Claim deadlines: loss is different from damage
If a shipment remains undelivered or lost, a claim may be appropriate. FedEx’s U.S. claims page states these filing deadlines:

The nine-month period is a filing limit, not an instruction to wait nine months before reporting a problem. Damage and missing-contents deadlines are separate from a whole-shipment loss claim. Confirm the terms that apply to the exact shipment, since route, service, and region can matter. FedEx’s claims page lists the U.S. deadlines and claim process.
Regional terms can differ. For example, FedEx’s Europe conditions PDF, dated 2021, specifies notice within nine months after handover for loss, non-delivery, or misdelivery, and a separate 21-day period for damage, delay, or missing contents. Those terms are evidence of regional variation, not universal current advice. Read the Europe conditions and check the terms applicable to your route.

What to have ready for a claim
Gather the tracking or PRO number and evidence of the shipment’s value. FedEx lists receipts, invoices, proof of payment, and item details among useful supporting documents. Retain the original packaging if the issue involves damage or the shipment may need inspection. FedEx’s claim-filing instructions explain the supporting information it may request.
An older FedEx claims document says most cases are normally resolved in five to seven business days after FedEx receives the claim form and supporting documentation, unless additional research is needed. This is a typical estimate from that document, not a guarantee and not the time FedEx takes to locate a missing parcel. See the claims document.
