Logan Paul said he paid about $3.5 million for what he believed was a sealed case of first-edition Pokémon cards. When he and collector Bolillo Lajan San opened it at Baseball Card Exchange in Chicago, reports said the case contained non-Pokémon cards, described as G.I. Joe cards. The case’s provenance and authentication history later drew scrutiny, but the available reporting does not establish who knowingly misrepresented it or whether Paul ultimately recovered the full amount.
What did Logan Paul pay $3.5 million for?
Paul said the purchase was a purported sealed case of first-edition Pokémon cards. Contemporaneous coverage reported that the transaction price was about $3.5 million, and described the episode in connection with his video titled “I Lost $3,500,000 On Fake Pokémon Cards.” ComicBook.com’s 2022 report covered the video and the purported case; GameSpot’s January 2022 report covered the opening and the reported price.
The $3.5 million figure is the reported purchase price, not a verified final net loss. Reporting on the transaction and the unboxing does not establish whether Paul later recovered all, some, or none of the money.
What happened when the case was opened?
Paul and collector Bolillo Lajan San took the case to Baseball Card Exchange in Chicago for an opening and check. Reports said the box contained non-Pokémon cards, identified as G.I. Joe cards, rather than the expected Pokémon product. GameSpot’s account describes the opening and the authentication context.

The distinction matters: packaging that appears intact, or an earlier assessment of a sealed case, is not the same as confirming that the contents are authentic Pokémon cards. In this case, the reported contents contradicted what Paul believed he had bought.
Why did collectors question the case?
PokéBeach’s January 2022 specialist reporting described inconsistencies in the case’s provenance and concerns raised by collectors. Its report on the case discusses the disputed history and conduct in the chain of sale.

- The Pokémon TCG: Mega Evolution—Pitch Black Elite Trainer Box includes 9 Pokémon TCG: Mega Evolution—Pitch Black booster packs and 1 full-art foil promo card featuring Zarude.
- This also comes with 65 card sleeves, 40 Pokémon TCG Energy cards, and a player’s guide to the Mega Evolution—Pitch Black expansion.
- You will also get a competition-legal coin-flip die, 6 damage-counter dice, and a plastic coin.
- You will also find a collector’s box to hold everything, with 6 dividers to keep it organized and a code card for Pokémon Trading Card Game Live.
Those concerns are allegations and questions about the case’s history, not proof that every intermediary or anyone involved in an earlier assessment knew the contents were fake. The reporting cited here does not establish who, if anyone, knowingly misrepresented the case, nor does it settle legal responsibility.
What is established about the loss—and what is not?
- Reported purchase price: About $3.5 million, attributed to Paul’s account and contemporaneous coverage.
- Reported contents: Non-Pokémon cards, described in coverage as G.I. Joe cards.
- Disputed issue: The case’s provenance and authentication history drew scrutiny from collectors.
- Unsettled outcome: The sources cited here do not verify whether Paul recovered the full purchase price or identify who knowingly misrepresented the case.
That makes “scammed out of $3.5 million” a useful description of the reported episode, but not a verified accounting of Paul’s final financial loss or a finding about any person’s intent.

What the case illustrates for collectible buyers
A seal or an authentication claim can speak to packaging or an assessment process without proving that the contents are genuine. For a high-value sealed collectible, buyers should scrutinize provenance—the documented chain of ownership—as well as what an authentication actually verifies. Independent review can reduce uncertainty, but no single check guarantees authenticity.
