Local SEO services can help your small business present accurate, useful information when nearby customers search for a service, such as “salons near me” or “salons open now.” They can improve how clearly your business matches relevant searches, but no provider can guarantee a higher position in Google’s local results: Google says there is no way to request or pay for one.

What local SEO can—and cannot—do

Google says local results are mainly based on three factors: relevance, distance and prominence. Google’s local ranking guidance defines relevance as how well a Business Profile matches a search, distance as how far a business is from the searcher or the location named in the query, and prominence as how well-known the business is.

  • Relevance: Accurate categories, services, hours and other profile details help explain what your business offers.
  • Distance: This reflects proximity, so a business cannot edit its way closer to a searcher.
  • Prominence: Google describes this in terms of how well-known a business is. Reviews and information about a business across the web are among the details Google discusses in its guidance.

Local SEO work can make your information clearer and more complete, and help you maintain it across your profile and website. It cannot control the searcher’s location, make every search relevant to your business or guarantee that Google will show you in a particular position. Google’s guidance is explicit: “There’s no way to request or pay for a better local ranking on Google.”

What a local SEO service may work on

A service should focus on accurate information that helps prospective customers decide whether to contact or visit you. Its scope may include:

  • Your Google Business Profile: Check that the business name, category, phone number, website, address or service area, and hours are correct and complete.
  • Your website: Make the services, locations served and ways to get in touch easy to understand. Location pages should describe real locations or service areas, not imply a presence where you do not operate.
  • Reviews and photos: Improve how the profile presents the business by adding useful photos and responding to customer reviews. Google recommends reviews and photos as part of improving profile usefulness and presentation; neither guarantees a ranking.
  • Other public business information: Review relevant web information for accuracy. Google says it may compile profile information from public web content, licensed data, user contributions and its own interactions with places, not only from the business owner’s entries. Google explains how it sources information for Business Profiles.

Ask a provider to distinguish concrete work—such as correcting hours or improving a page—from outcomes it cannot control, such as a guaranteed position, number of calls or revenue increase.

Start with Google Business Profile

Google Business Profile is available at no charge to eligible businesses that make face-to-face contact with customers. It lets owners manage information shown on Google Search and Maps, including hours, phone, website and location details, and add photos and videos or collect and respond to reviews. An online-only business with no in-person location or service is not eligible.

Rank #2
Adams Sales Order Book, 2-Part, Carbonless, White/Canary, 4-3/16 x 7-3/16 Inches, 50 Sets per Book (DC4705)
  • QUALITY INVOICES: Adams Order books provide a professional invoice or customer receipt; a great way to create and maintain a professional image for small businesses and service providers
  • 50 TWO-PART CARBONLESS FORMS: Customers get the perforated white top copy; retain the canary and pink copies for your records
  • WRAP-AROUND COVER: Fold the back cover between sets to keep invoices neat and legible
  • ROOM FOR CUSTOMIZATION: A blank space at top leaves room for your company stamp; a big savings over custom-printed forms
  • CONSECUTIVELY NUMBERED: Large 6-digit numbers in the upper right hand corner help you thumb through orders quickly

The profile itself is free; an SEO consultant or agency may charge for its work managing the profile or handling broader local SEO. If you hire help, make sure the business retains ownership and access to its profile rather than handing permanent control to a provider.

Set your address or service area correctly

Your profile should reflect how customers actually receive your service. Google distinguishes businesses that serve customers at their address from businesses that visit or deliver to customers.

  • Storefront: Customers visit the business at its address.
  • Service-area business: You visit or deliver to customers and do not serve them at your business address. Google says to specify service areas using real places, such as cities or postal codes, rather than a radius.
  • Hybrid business: You serve customers at your address and also visit or deliver to them. Address-display needs differ from those of a service-area-only business.

Google says one service-area business can have one profile for its overall service area. See Google’s guidance on service-area and hybrid businesses before changing address or area settings.

Decide whether to manage local SEO yourself or hire help

There is no universally best choice. A straightforward profile may be manageable in-house; a provider may be useful if you need help coordinating profile accuracy, website pages, reviews and broader web information. Compare the proposed work and accountability rather than buying a promised ranking.

What to compare Questions to ask
Scope Does the work cover only profile updates, or also the website, reviews and other public business information?
Ownership and access Will your business retain ownership and administrative access to its Google Business Profile?
Reporting Will the provider show what it changed and report progress in terms of completed work and observable information, rather than guarantee a ranking?
Locations and service area Does the plan reflect the areas and locations where you actually serve customers?
Claims and fees Are the deliverables clear, and is the provider’s fee separate from Google Business Profile, which is no charge?

Google’s guidance does not establish typical provider fees, delivery timelines or a guaranteed return on hiring an SEO service. Ask for those terms directly and assess them against the work offered; do not treat a sales estimate as a proven result.

What to expect after improvements

Keep the profile, website and customer-facing details accurate as your business changes. A service can help maintain that information and make your local presence more useful to searchers, but Google’s three ranking factors mean that completeness alone cannot ensure visibility for every nearby query. Measure the provider by the work it actually performs and the clarity of the information customers can find.
