Lightning is a payment network built on Bitcoin payment channels, while Core Lightning (CLN) is software for operating a node on that network. A recipient creates an invoice, the payer’s node finds a route through channels, and intermediary nodes forward the payment conditionally. Whether it succeeds depends on connectivity and directional liquidity, not simply on whether a channel appears in public network data.
What the Lightning Network is
The Lightning Network is a peer-to-peer payment network anchored to the Bitcoin blockchain. Its participants use payment channels to make repeated transfers without publishing every balance update on-chain. The blockchain remains the settlement and enforcement layer, while most payment activity occurs between connected nodes.

A channel is funded by a Bitcoin transaction. Once it is open, the participants can update how the channel’s value is divided by exchanging signed commitments. Those updates are not separate Bitcoin transactions. A later closing transaction records the final result on-chain, either cooperatively or through the protocol’s dispute rules.
Channels can be linked. If you do not have a direct channel to the person you are paying, your node can attempt a path through one or more intermediary nodes. Each hop forwards the payment through its own channel and may charge a routing fee. The collection of channels and their routing relationships is the network; it is not a single company, wallet, or server.

What Core Lightning is—and is not
Core Lightning (CLN) is Blockstream’s open-source implementation of the Lightning protocol. It is node software with documented installation procedures, operational tools, APIs, and RPC methods. Running CLN means operating one implementation that connects to the wider network.
CLN is therefore different from the Lightning Network itself:
| Term | Meaning | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Lightning Network | The interoperable peer-to-peer network of Bitcoin-anchored channels | Provides the channels and routes through which payments can move |
| Core Lightning | An open-source node implementation | Lets an operator open channels, create invoices, route payments, and manage a node through commands and APIs |
| Lightning node | A running instance of an implementation such as CLN | Maintains channels, communicates with peers, and participates in payments |
| Wallet application | A user interface that may embed or connect to node software | Helps a person pay or receive without necessarily exposing node operations directly |
Calling CLN “the Lightning Network” confuses software with the protocol ecosystem. Likewise, calling it a wallet misses its role as infrastructure that can be controlled through RPC and API interfaces.

What happens during a Lightning payment
1. The recipient creates an invoice
The recipient first creates an invoice that specifies the payment request. In CLN, the invoice RPC creates an expectation of payment and returns an invoice token that can be shared with the payer. The invoice can specify an amount or allow any amount, and it can include a route hint for an incoming channel that is not otherwise advertised publicly.
An invoice is normally represented as a string that the payer’s wallet or node can scan or paste. It is not the same thing as a Bitcoin address: it describes a particular Lightning payment and its conditions.
2. The payer supplies the invoice to a node
The payer scans, pastes, or otherwise transfers the invoice to their Lightning wallet or node. The payer’s software decodes the payment details and checks that the request is still usable according to the invoice’s conditions.

3. The payer’s node chooses a route
The payer’s node uses its view of the network to select a path from the payer to the recipient. Public gossip can advertise channel existence, capacity, and fee policy. That information helps a node construct candidate routes, but it does not reveal the exact balance distribution inside every channel.

A route can therefore look plausible and still fail. A channel may have enough total capacity while lacking enough usable balance on the direction required for this payment. The node may try another route if one exists.
4. Intermediary nodes forward conditionally
Each intermediary forwards a conditional payment across its channel. The condition uses a cryptographic hash and a time lock. The recipient can complete the payment by revealing the corresponding preimage; that revelation lets each preceding hop claim the amount it forwarded. If the condition is not satisfied before the relevant time limit, the funds can be returned according to the channel’s commitment rules.
This arrangement allows routing nodes to forward payments without taking unilateral custody of the entire payment. The underlying Bitcoin blockchain supplies enforcement if a participant stops cooperating, although the practical safety of any operation still depends on correct software, backups, monitoring, and timely action.
5. The recipient settles the invoice
When the recipient’s node receives the payment and releases the required preimage, the payment settles across the route. Each intermediary receives its forwarding amount and fee, and the payer’s and recipient’s channel balances change without an individual on-chain transaction for every hop.

Why liquidity is the central practical constraint
Lightning liquidity is directional. A node needs suitable outbound balance to send and suitable inbound capacity to receive. A channel’s advertised capacity is the total value committed to it, not a guarantee that the required amount is available in the direction a payment needs.
Sending liquidity
To pay someone, your node needs a route with enough usable balance moving away from you at every hop. Rebalancing, receiving payments, or opening channels with different peers can change that position over time, but no single channel guarantees permanent sending capacity.
Receiving liquidity
To receive through your node, you need inbound liquidity: capacity on the other side of your channels that can move toward you. Merely opening a channel from your node does not automatically give you the ability to receive the amount you want.
Recommended Free Tools
Core Lightning’s FAQ identifies two common ways to obtain inbound liquidity: another node opens a channel to you, or you successfully send through a channel that you opened, shifting balance toward your side. The amount and reliability of inbound capacity depend on the peers, channel sizes, and payments actually moving through them.
Why a displayed route can still fail
- Public channel data may not show the private balance split.
- The usable balance may be smaller than the invoice amount in the required direction.
- A channel or peer may be temporarily offline or unwilling to forward.
- Fees and the amount needed at each hop may make an otherwise short route unusable.
- The recipient’s channel may lack enough inbound capacity.
These are normal network conditions, not proof that the invoice, wallet, or Bitcoin blockchain is broken.
Online availability and node connectivity
Both endpoints generally need to be online while a Lightning payment is attempted. The payer’s node must discover and use a route, and the recipient’s node must be available to receive and settle the invoice. An operator who runs a node intermittently should understand that an open channel does not by itself make the node continuously reachable.

Core Lightning’s FAQ notes that a node behind a NAT router may need TCP port 9735 forwarded for inbound connectivity. The exact networking arrangement depends on the router, firewall, hosting environment, and whether the node has a stable address. Treat port forwarding as an operational requirement to verify, not as a universal hardware prescription.

- Keep the node process running during expected payment windows.
- Ensure peers can reach the node on the configured Lightning port.
- Monitor channel state and peer connections.
- Maintain current backups and a recovery plan for the node’s channel data.
- Test small payments before relying on a route for a larger payment.
Opening a channel with Core Lightning
CLN’s fundchannel RPC opens a channel by committing a funding transaction to Bitcoin. The process therefore has an on-chain component before the channel can be used for ordinary Lightning routing.
- Select a peer. Choose a reachable Lightning node whose operating role and connectivity fit your payment needs.
- Connect to the peer. Your CLN node must establish a peer connection before requesting a channel.
- Call
fundchannel. Specify the peer and the amount to commit to the channel. CLN creates the funding transaction. - Broadcast and wait for confirmation. The transaction pays Bitcoin network fees and must receive the confirmations required by the channel and peer policy.
- Verify the channel state. Use CLN’s channel-management and status interfaces to confirm that the channel is usable.
- Plan the balance direction. A newly funded channel may be useful for sending but still provide little inbound capacity for receiving until payments shift the balance or another peer opens a channel to you.
Closing a channel can also involve an on-chain transaction. Funding and closure costs therefore depend on Bitcoin blockchain fees and transaction conditions at the time; there is no fixed universal price established by the protocol.
Lightning fees versus Bitcoin on-chain fees
Two cost categories are easy to confuse:
| Cost | When it occurs | What determines it |
|---|---|---|
| Bitcoin on-chain fee | Opening a channel, closing it, or performing another blockchain transaction | Transaction size, fee market conditions, and the operator’s fee selection |
| Lightning routing fee | When intermediary nodes forward a payment | The fee policies set by the forwarding nodes and the route selected |
A direct payment may involve fewer routing hops, while a routed payment can incur fees at several intermediaries. Neither category has a permanent fixed amount. Avoid promises about a guaranteed settlement time, fee, or success rate because current blockchain conditions, peer policies, route availability, and liquidity all affect the result.
How to receive a payment through a CLN node
- Confirm inbound capacity. Check that your channels can accept the amount in the incoming direction.
- Create the invoice. Use CLN’s
invoiceRPC with a specified amount, or use its any-amount option when the final amount is not predetermined. Add a description or label suitable for your accounting system. - Add a route hint when needed. If the incoming channel is not publicly advertised, include a route hint so the payer’s node can find a path to you.
- Share the invoice securely. Send the invoice string to the payer through the agreed channel and do not reuse an invoice as a general account identifier.
- Stay online. Keep the receiving node connected while the payer attempts the payment.
- Verify settlement. Confirm through CLN’s invoice or event interfaces that the invoice is paid before delivering goods, services, or refunds.
If the payment fails, create a fresh invoice only after checking whether the original remains unpaid and whether the problem was route liquidity, connectivity, amount, or expiry conditions.

The payer sees “no route”
This usually means the payer’s node cannot construct a usable path from its current network view. Check peer connectivity, whether the recipient is reachable, the invoice’s route hint, and whether a different route or smaller amount succeeds.

The route exists but payment fails
Advertised capacity may not match spendable directional balance. Try another route or amount, and have the recipient verify inbound liquidity. A failed attempt does not establish that the channel’s total capacity is exhausted.
The recipient never sees the payment
Verify that the recipient’s node is online, the invoice was copied correctly, and the invoice has not expired or already been settled. NAT or firewall rules can prevent inbound connectivity even when the node process itself is running.
Channel opening is delayed
The funding transaction is a Bitcoin transaction, so confirmation depends on the blockchain’s current conditions and the transaction’s fee rate. The channel cannot be treated as immediately usable merely because the RPC call was accepted.
A node loses data or is restored incorrectly
Channel state is operationally important. Use CLN’s documented backup and recovery procedures, keep backups current, and do not restore stale channel data in a way that could cause the node to broadcast outdated commitments. The exact recovery process depends on the CLN release and deployment, so follow the documentation for the version you run.
Security model and realistic expectations
Lightning’s conditional forwarding uses hash preimages and time locks so that a route can settle atomically across multiple channels. Intermediaries do not need to trust one another to honor the payment voluntarily; the conditions and Bitcoin’s enforcement mechanisms provide the settlement rules.
That does not mean every operational risk disappears. Software bugs, lost channel data, poor backup practices, offline periods, routing failures, and incorrect liquidity assumptions can still cause losses, delays, or unavailable funds. Lightning is not perfectly private in every circumstance, and it does not guarantee instant or successful payment for every invoice.
Choosing CLN for your role
CLN is most relevant when you want direct control of a Lightning node, automation through RPC or APIs, and the ability to manage channels and routing policies. A consumer who only wants to pay may prefer a wallet interface that hides node operations. A merchant may value invoice creation and settlement callbacks. A routing-node operator may prioritize stable connectivity, channel-management tools, monitoring, backups, and upgrade discipline.
