How Kevin O’Leary Built His Fortune—and What the $400 Million Estimate Means

Kevin O’Leary’s fortune began with SoftKey, the software company he founded in 1986. The reported $4.2 billion Mattel acquisition and Fortune’s 2026 estimate of his net worth are different measures.

Kevin O’Leary’s wealth-building story starts with SoftKey, the software company he founded in 1986, and the 1999 sale of its successor, The Learning Company, to Mattel. Fortune reported O’Leary’s net worth at about $400 million in 2026, but that is an estimate—not a verified financial disclosure. The reported $4.2 billion acquisition price was the value of the company transaction, not O’Leary’s personal proceeds or net worth.

How Kevin O’Leary made his first fortune

O’Leary founded SoftKey Software Products in 1986 after earning an MBA and starting a production company. ABC describes SoftKey’s approach as bringing consumer-goods marketing principles to the software industry. Rather than relying only on organic growth, the company expanded through acquisitions of software publishers and competitors.

ABC’s account lists acquisitions including WordStar International, Spinnaker Software, Compton’s New Media, The Learning Company, Creative Wonders, the Minnesota Educational Computing Company, Mindscape, and Broderbund. By 1998, ABC reports, the business had annual sales above $800 million, 2,000 employees, and offices in 15 countries. ABC also says the company raised more than $1 billion in financing.

What happened in the Mattel deal

Mattel acquired The Learning Company in 1999 for a reported $4.2 billion, according to ABC’s biography; Fortune reported the same deal figure in 2026. That number describes the acquisition transaction—not the amount O’Leary personally received.

Those measures are easy to conflate, but they answer different questions:

  • Company transaction value: The reported $4.2 billion price for Mattel’s acquisition of The Learning Company.
  • Personal proceeds: The amount O’Leary personally took away from the transaction. The public sources cited here do not establish that figure.
  • Estimated net worth: A later estimate of the value of a person’s assets minus liabilities. Fortune put O’Leary’s at about $400 million in 2026; it is not an audited or disclosed balance sheet.

As Fortune recounts, O’Leary described his first millionaire moment as “very anticlimatic.” The anecdote reflects the personal milestone, not a disclosure of his proceeds from Mattel’s acquisition.

Businesses and public roles after SoftKey

Storage Now

O’Leary moved into other ventures after the software business. ABC says he co-founded Storage Now in 2003. The company operated in 11 cities and was acquired in March 2007 for $110 million. That is a reported company sale price; it does not establish O’Leary’s individual proceeds.

Investing and television

O’Leary became an investor on Shark Tank at the show’s 2009 premiere, according to Fortune’s 2026 profile. His public identity now combines business ventures and investing with the blunt television persona behind the nickname “Mr. Wonderful.” ABC’s biography attributes this line to him: “Don’t cry about money, it never cries for you.”

That persona is also reflected in his description of investing: “Here’s how I think of my money: As soldiers. I send them out to war everyday. I want them to take prisoners and come home, so there’s more of them.” ABC presents the quote as O’Leary’s own explanation of how he thinks about his money; it is an illustration of his approach, not a measure of his financial results.

What the $400 million figure does—and doesn’t—tell you

Fortune reported O’Leary’s estimated net worth as about $400 million on March 22, 2026. Treat that as a media estimate, not a precise, independently verified balance-sheet figure. The sources do not establish his current audited net worth or the personal cash proceeds he received from the Mattel deal.

The comparison between $4.2 billion and $400 million is therefore not a simple accounting of money gained and then lost. One is the reported value of a company acquisition in 1999; the other is a later estimate of one person’s net worth. Without verified information about his ownership stake, transaction terms, taxes, investments, liabilities, and later business outcomes, the gap cannot be used to calculate what happened to his personal wealth.
