How K. A. Hamied and Luba Derczanska’s Romance Became Part of Cipla’s Story

K. A. Hamied and Luba Derczanska’s cross-cultural marriage became part of Cipla’s family story through their son Yusuf, who joined the company decades after its founding.

The romance between Indian chemist K. A. Hamied and Lithuanian Jewish student Luba Derczanska shaped Cipla through family, identity and a legacy that their son Yusuf later carried into the company. It did not, on the available evidence, single-handedly create Cipla or explain its growth: Hamied founded the pharmaceutical firm in 1935, decades before Yusuf joined.

Who were K. A. Hamied and Luba Derczanska?

K. A. Hamied was born in Aligarh in 1898. A chemist, teacher and Indian nationalist, he taught at Jamia Millia Islamia and pursued further scientific training in Germany. In 1927, he returned to Aligarh while considering a chemical technology institute, an ambition tied to industrial development and financial independence. A scholarly account of his Berlin and Aligarh years is available in the Library of Congress-hosted chapter “An Indian Muslim in Jewish Berlin: Khwaja Abdul Hamied”.

Luba Derczanska was born in Wilno, then part of Russian Poland; the city is now Vilnius, Lithuania. According to a 2017 biographical feature by the Lithuanian Jewish Community, she met Hamied near Berlin in 1925, where she was a student. Their relationship developed from that meeting. The feature provides the account of their courtship and marriage, so those details should be understood as reported biography rather than a full independent reconstruction of every event.

How did the couple marry?

The biographical feature reports that Hamied and Derczanska married at Berlin’s mosque in 1928. They held another ceremony at the Choral Synagogue in Wilno in 1929, and their marriage was also solemnized at a London register office. The multiple ceremonies reflect the cross-cultural and cross-border circumstances of their lives, rather than a simple story of two fixed identities.

The family history also carried profound loss. The feature reports that Luba’s parents were murdered during the Holocaust. It recounts that, in a 1992 exchange with a Times of India editor who asked him as a Muslim leader, Yusuf Hamied replied: “Why aren’t you asking me as an Indian Jew? Because my name is Hamied? My mother was Jewish.” The wording is reported by the feature and its republication by Scroll; neither is an independently reviewed transcript of the interview.

How did the family connection reach Cipla?

K. A. Hamied founded Cipla—originally Chemical, Industrial & Pharmaceutical Laboratories—in 1935. Cipla’s own commemorative history dates the establishment to 17 August and describes the founding aim as making medicines accessible in India. That company account is the source for its founding narrative and milestones.

The firm therefore existed long before the couple’s son, Yusuf K. Hamied, joined it in 1961. Cipla says Yusuf helped pioneer active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) manufacturing in India. His entry linked the family’s next generation to the company’s technical and business development, but it does not establish that his parents’ romance directly caused Cipla’s later scale.

What does the romance tell us about Cipla’s history?

The connection is best understood as part of a family and values story, not as a single-cause explanation of a corporation. Hamied’s chemistry, nationalist politics and interest in industrial capacity are documented aspects of his work; Cipla’s own history presents accessible medicines as a founding purpose. Yusuf’s later role connects that inheritance to the company’s subsequent technical milestones.

Cipla’s timeline also records Mahatma Gandhi’s visit on 4 July 1939, quoting him as saying, “I was delighted to visit this Indian enterprise”. The company says the words have been immortalised across its offices. In 1972, its timeline notes an indigenously developed inhaler and the death of K. A. Hamied on 23 June. These are company-reported milestones; they offer context for Cipla’s development but do not prove that the marriage itself drove each one.

Seen carefully, the story joins personal history to corporate history without collapsing them. A Muslim Indian chemist and a Jewish woman from Wilno built a family across cultural and political boundaries; their son later took a role in the company his father had founded. That is a meaningful connection to Cipla’s legacy, even though the available accounts do not isolate the romance as the cause of the company’s growth.
