Birmingham City was reported to be due another payment when Jude Bellingham moved from Borussia Dortmund to Real Madrid in 2023. The title figure of £6 million is not independently confirmed by the available sources: BBC Sport reported a seven-figure payment, while Deutsche Welle reported that Birmingham’s sell-on entitlement was 5% of the sell-on fee—not 5% of Real Madrid’s entire transfer payment.

What Birmingham City was reported to receive

BBC Sport reported that Birmingham was set to receive a seven-figure sum after Real Madrid agreed to sign Bellingham in 2023. It did not specify £6 million in the report cited here. Deutsche Welle reported that Birmingham’s 2020 agreement entitled the club to 5% of the sell-on fee. That percentage should not be read as 5% of Real Madrid’s full fee: the reporting describes it as a share of the sell-on fee, and the sources do not establish the precise calculation or the amount ultimately paid.

Accordingly, £6 million is the figure asserted in the headline, but it is not independently verified by these sources. Neither the BBC report nor Borussia Dortmund’s official transfer announcement provides a club-confirmed breakdown of Birmingham’s proceeds.

How the two transfers fit together

Move Reported fee or terms What it means for Birmingham
Birmingham City to Borussia Dortmund, 2020 BBC Sport reported a £25m fee. BBC said Birmingham had a sell-on clause that would bring a seven-figure sum after Bellingham’s next move.
Borussia Dortmund to Real Madrid, agreed June 2023 BBC Sport reported an initial €103m (£88.5m) fee. Dortmund described a high fixed fee plus performance-related variables spread over six years. Deutsche Welle reported Birmingham’s share as 5% of the sell-on fee; the amount Birmingham received is not specified in the official Dortmund announcement.

The figures refer to different things. The £25m was the reported fee for the 2020 transfer to Dortmund. The €103m (£88.5m) was the reported initial fee for the 2023 move to Real Madrid, not a confirmed calculation of the sell-on payment. Dortmund’s announcement also distinguished a fixed fee from performance-related variables, so the initial fee alone does not describe every possible element of the later deal.

What a sell-on clause does

A sell-on clause gives a selling club a contractual right to a portion of value associated with a player’s later transfer. It can provide income years after the first sale, but the wording matters: the percentage might apply to a defined fee or to a club’s profit on a later sale. In Bellingham’s case, Deutsche Welle reported a 5% share of the sell-on fee. The available reporting does not spell out the clause’s full legal terms or establish the calculation base, so applying 5% directly to the whole Real Madrid fee would go beyond what is reported.

Why the second payment mattered to Birmingham

The reported windfall followed a major rise in Bellingham’s profile after his move to Germany. At the time of his 2023 transfer, Dortmund said he had made 132 appearances, scored 24 goals and provided 25 assists for the club. Those figures give context to the scale of his Dortmund spell, but they do not verify Birmingham’s payment or explain how its sell-on entitlement was calculated.

What is—and is not—confirmed about the £6m figure

  • Reported: BBC Sport said Birmingham was due a seven-figure sum after the 2023 transfer.
  • Reported: Deutsche Welle put Birmingham’s entitlement at 5% of the sell-on fee.
  • Not established by these sources: that the payment was exactly £6 million, how that figure was calculated, whether variables were included, or the precise base to which the 5% applied.

The grounded conclusion is that Bellingham’s 2023 move was reported to trigger another substantial payment for Birmingham under its sell-on arrangement. The exact £6 million amount remains unverified by the BBC, Deutsche Welle and Dortmund sources cited here.
