Joss Taylor and Megan Alcorn left their Perth jobs in June 2022 to travel around Australia and build their travel-content work. As their audience grew, brands began approaching them, and they believed they could afford the trip without quickly running through their savings. But the reporting does not disclose their earnings, sponsorship terms or complete income mix—so their story is a personal account, not a formula for replacing a salary.

Why did Taylor and Alcorn leave their jobs?

Taylor grew up in Katanning, Western Australia, studied outdoor recreation and marketing, and met teacher Megan Alcorn in Perth in 2019. They began travelling and posting together during the COVID period. As their audience grew and brands started reaching out, they decided travel could be financially workable without rapidly depleting their savings. They quit their jobs in June 2022.

Taylor described the leap as both daunting and exciting because it meant giving up the security of employment: “It was a big jump to quit your day job and purely focus on one thing,” he told PerthNow in an interview published 22 July 2024.

What is known about the money—and what is not?

The couple’s account is that audience growth and brand approaches helped them feel able to travel without quickly burning through savings. The available reporting does not state how much they earned, what any brand paid, how long agreements lasted, or how much of their trip was funded by savings, paid work or other sources. Their full revenue mix is not established.

PerthNow reported that Seaustravl had 64,000 Instagram followers and 33,000 YouTube subscribers in 2024. Those are historical audience counts, not current figures, and they do not show how much the couple earned. Follower totals alone cannot establish whether a creator can replace a particular salary or cover the costs of travelling.

Seaustravl’s own marketing page describes the pair as having more than six years of digital marketing experience and names collaborations with Anaconda and Great Northern Brewing Co. Those are statements from the couple’s business page; neither the interview nor that page establishes that the collaborations involved affiliate commissions or reveals their contract terms. The exact revenue model behind their 2022 decision remains undisclosed.

What changed when travel became work?

Taylor said the hardest part was balancing the pressure to create content every day with being present in the places they visited. As he put it, “You’ve got to find that balance between really enjoying something and having your phone in front of you.” The trade-off matters: a trip can be both an experience and a production schedule, and the demands of making content may affect how freely a creator spends time offline.

There were also ordinary practical hardships. Tent travel could be uncomfortable in wind and rain, and they sometimes had few places to shelter. Their favourite items included a Jetboil hiking stove, a comfortable mattress, a Weber barbecue and a hammock. Seaustravl’s About page describes their setup evolving from sleeping on a vehicle tray with an old esky to using a rooftop tent and fridge. The story does not identify current product models or establish that any particular kit is necessary for full-time travel.

Where did they travel, and what came next?

Taylor singled out the Kimberley, including the East Kimberley and Gibb River Road around Kununurra, as well as Tasmania. He described the Kimberley as rugged and Tasmania as having diverse landscapes. The couple also said they tried to spend money in small towns and connect with local people.

By July 2024, the interview reported that they had returned to Perth and were reassessing their next steps. They were considering upgrading to a caravan and planning overseas travel; those were plans at that time, not confirmed current arrangements.

What can someone considering a similar leap take from their story?

Their experience suggests questions to answer before treating creator work as a substitute for a job. It does not establish that another creator will receive brand approaches, earn a reliable income or travel without drawing on savings.

  • Work out the financial runway. Estimate essential living and travel costs, decide how much savings you are willing to use, and consider what happens if creator income is delayed or lower than expected.
  • Separate interest from committed income. An approach from a brand is not the same as a signed agreement or a predictable payment. Taylor and Alcorn’s reported story does not publish contract details or earnings.
  • Account for the work itself. Their main challenge was making content without letting the phone dominate the experience. A travel-content plan should include the time and pressure involved in creating regularly, not only destinations.
  • Plan for day-to-day comfort and logistics. Their tent-weather difficulties show that travel conditions matter. The right camping setup depends on a trip’s needs; the reported gear list is context, not a product recommendation.

Taylor offered this personal advice to people contemplating a similar choice: “I know that’s a cliche, but it’s pretty much the best advice you can give someone when they’re contemplating it because no one ever regrets it,” he said. That is his view, not evidence that people generally never regret leaving a job.
