James Bord’s reported professional poker winnings total $4.3 million (£3.2 million), according to BBC Sport, but that figure is not a verified net worth. He also worked in sports betting and analytics and later founded an AI-focused data company; advisers said he and his bid partner made money through technology and analytics investments, without disclosing details. His consortium’s Sheffield Wednesday takeover did not go through: it withdrew in February 2026, and the club later transferred to a different buyer.
How James Bord reportedly made his money
Public reporting points to several parts of Bord’s career, but does not establish how much wealth he holds today. The clearest figures relate to poker prizes; his employment, business activity and investments are not accompanied by a publicly verified personal balance sheet.
Professional poker winnings
BBC Sport reported in 2025 that Bord had won $4.3 million (£3.2 million) on the professional poker circuit. The National separately reported that he won $1.3 million for taking the 2010 World Series of Poker Europe Main Event. That tournament prize is one reported result within his poker career, not an additional estimate of his net worth. BBC Sport and The National reported these figures.
The Guardian put his career poker winnings at about £3 million in 2026. That is a rounded report of winnings, rather than a valuation of his assets or a measure of what he kept after costs, taxes or other financial obligations. The Guardian also said there was no public record establishing his wealth beyond the reported poker winnings.

Work in betting, analytics and AI
Bord worked for gambling firms Starlizard and Smartodds, according to BBC Sport. After leaving Smartodds, he focused on machine learning and artificial intelligence in San Francisco and went on to run Short Circuit Science, a data company that BBC Sport described as using AI for sports analytics. The National reported that Bord founded Short Circuit Science in 2016 and described its work as spanning sports analytics, climate and pharmaceuticals. These reports describe his career and business activity; they do not disclose company accounts or show how much income or equity he personally received. BBC Sport; The National.
Investments described by his advisers
During the Wednesday bid, advisers to Bord and Felix Romer said the proposal was privately funded and that the pair had made money through investments in technology and analytics. They declined to provide details, The Guardian reported. That is an explanation attributed to their advisers, not independently verified earnings or a disclosed breakdown of the bid’s funding. What is known—and not known—about Bord’s net worth
No reliable total net-worth figure is established in the cited reporting. Poker winnings are gross prizes, not a calculation of present-day wealth. Employment, a company’s activity, investment returns and capital committed by a consortium are separate measures and should not be combined into a personal fortune without supporting financial disclosures.
In particular, BBC Sport reported a £47.8 million proposed takeover, but that was the value associated with the consortium’s offer—not evidence that Bord personally owned or supplied £47.8 million. The Guardian’s account of private funding does not specify each participant’s contribution. BBC Sport; The Guardian.

What happened to the Sheffield Wednesday takeover?
The original “edges closer” framing is out of date. Bord’s group became preferred bidder, then withdrew. Sheffield Wednesday later transferred to a different owner.
- 24 December 2025: Bord’s consortium was selected as preferred bidder. BBC Sport reported that the bid still needed to pass the EFL Owners’ and Directors’ Test, with possible complications relating to gambling. BBC Sport.
- 25 February 2026: The consortium of Bord, Felix Romer and Alsharif Faisal Bin Jamil withdrew from the proposed £47.8 million takeover. BBC Sport reported that the group had been funding club losses at about £1 million a month and considered the club’s valuation lower than its offer; the agreement did not allow it to renegotiate. These were reported figures and context, not audited accounts presented here. BBC Sport.
- 2 May 2026: The EFL said administrators had reached an agreement with Arise Capital Partners LLC, led by David Storch, to transfer the club’s assets. The league said Wednesday had met its relevant requirements and was no longer in administration under its new ownership. EFL.
When the consortium withdrew, it said: “We have spent over £4m to help run the club over the last two months and, after much consideration, have decided that we can no longer continue to do so.” BBC Sport reported that statement. The reported £4 million was support for running the club, not a disclosed measure of Bord’s personal wealth. BBC Sport.

What Bord proposed to do at Wednesday
During the bid, The National described a proposed data-led approach to recruitment, sports science and in-game decisions. Bord said the group saw potential to use those tools with the club’s backroom staff to support decision-making and performance. This was an ambition for a takeover that did not happen; it was not an approach implemented by Bord at Sheffield Wednesday. The National; BBC Sport.
BBC Sport also reported that Short Circuit Science had an advisory role at multiple clubs, including Sheffield United, mostly involving youth players at the time of its December 2025 report. It described Bord as having football interests associated with Córdoba CF and Bulgaria’s Septemvri Sofia, and as owning Dunfermline with a partner. The National also reported his involvement with those clubs. The available reporting does not provide audited accounts or a complete ownership schedule, so these descriptions should not be read as a precise account of his holdings. BBC Sport; The National.
