How Jagex Used RuneScape Bonds to Fight Gold Farming

Jagex launched tradable RuneScape Bonds in 2013 as an official way to exchange in-game wealth for account benefits and, it hoped, divert demand from gold farmers.

Jagex introduced RuneScape Bonds in September 2013 to give players an official way to exchange in-game wealth for account benefits. The company said that channel could divert demand from illicit gold sellers; the announcement explained Jagex’s rationale, but did not prove Bonds eliminated or reduced gold farming.

What RuneScape Bonds did at launch

In an announcement dated 25 September 2013, Jagex described Bonds as tradable in-game items bought through its website. Players could trade or gift them to another player, who could redeem them for membership, spins, or RuneCoins under the launch-era offer. Their in-game value was to be determined by player demand. These are details of the 2013 launch, not a statement of every current mechanic. Jagex’s 2013 forum announcement

The system created an official player-mediated exchange: one player could obtain a Bond through Jagex and another could acquire it using in-game wealth. Jagex’s theory was that players seeking wealth or account benefits would have an authorized option instead of buying gold from third-party sellers. As developer Mod Jacmob put it, “The introduction of Bonds provides a way for the community to satisfy this demand without Jagex or any third party introducing gold into the game.” Jagex’s 2013 developer post

Why Jagex linked Bonds to its anti-farming effort

Gold farming involves accounts or operators generating in-game currency and items for sale outside the game. Jagex argued that this market was sustained by player demand. Bonds offered a sanctioned route for players to exchange game wealth for benefits, rather than relying on illicit sellers. CEO Mark Gerhard called Bonds “a critical part of our war against gold farmers and of fixing the damage they have caused to the game economy.” Jagex’s 2013 announcement

The intended distinction was not that Bonds made game wealth disappear. Instead, they were meant to put a Jagex-approved item and exchange path between players, with the company saying the arrangement avoided Jagex or a third party injecting new gold. Whether that design reduced illicit sales in practice is a separate question, and the launch statements do not establish an answer.

What Jagex reported about enforcement in 2013

In a developer post on 25 September 2013, Jagex cited the following figures as context for its anti-gold-farming campaign. They are historical company-reported statistics and estimates, not current RuneScape 3 measurements or independent findings. Jagex’s 2013 developer post

Jagex’s 2013 claim What it described
Over 90% Bots permanently removed during the preceding three months, according to Jagex.
20,000 to barely over 1,000 Daily incoming macro reports, which Jagex said had fallen to barely over 1,000.
1.1 million Ban offences against accounts known to be gold farmers since 1 January 2013, according to Jagex.
Over 3 trillion GP Gold and items Jagex said it had removed from gold-farmer accounts that year.
Around 170 billion GP per day Jagex’s estimate of gold sold in-game each day by illicit accounts it said it could link to gold farming.
Well over 40% Jagex’s estimate of the share of active players who had bought gold from third-party real-world trading vendors.

The figures show what Jagex said it was confronting when it announced Bonds. They do not show that Bonds caused enforcement results, reduced illicit trading, or made gold farming disappear.

How the original Bond tax worked

The launch announcement also described a 10% Grand Exchange value tax when a player re-traded a Bond after it had been traded or gifted. Jagex presented the charge as both a gold sink and a way to discourage excessive Bond merchanting. That was a 2013 mechanic; the announcement does not establish that the same tax or conditions apply today. Jagex’s 2013 announcement and FAQ

What the current rules and Bond page say

Jagex’s current Bonds page describes Bonds as in-game items redeemable for membership and RuneCoins. It says they can be traded player-to-player or through the Grand Exchange, and securely gifted. The page does not establish a current conversion rate in the information cited here, so launch-era prices or redemption details should not be treated as current. Jagex’s Bonds page

Jagex’s Rules of RuneScape prohibit real-world trading, including buying or selling in-game items, gold, or account names for money or anything else of value. The rules also cover paying someone to play an account. Jagex warns that illicit sellers may use cheating or hijacked accounts and that buyers face fraud and personal-information risks. Botting or macroing is also prohibited and can lead to an account ban. Rules of RuneScape Jagex’s botting and macroing rules

What Bonds establish—and what they do not

Bonds are an official, player-to-player route to account benefits, while buying gold from outside sellers is prohibited by Jagex. That difference in status and rules explains the company’s anti-farming argument. The available 2013 statements and current product and policy pages do not quantify present-day gold farming, establish how much Bonds displace illicit sales, or provide a causal evaluation of the system’s effectiveness.
