How Is Bitcoin Generated? Mining, Block Rewards, and Home Mining

Bitcoin is generated through proof-of-work mining, but only a valid block’s coinbase transaction can claim new BTC. Here’s how the process and home-mining economics work.

Bitcoin is generated through proof-of-work mining: specialized computers compete to add valid blocks of transactions to the Bitcoin blockchain. When a valid block is accepted, its first transaction can create the scheduled block subsidy and collect transaction fees for the miner.

As of August 18, 2026, that subsidy is 3.125 BTC per accepted block. It is not a guaranteed payment to every miner, and it is separate from the fees attached to transactions in the block. Buying Bitcoin does not generate new coins; it transfers existing BTC from one owner to another.

What it means to generate Bitcoin

“Generate Bitcoin” can mean three different things:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • New issuance: A valid block’s coinbase transaction creates the block subsidy according to Bitcoin’s protocol rules.
  • Acquiring ownership: You can buy, receive, or earn BTC that has already been issued. These transfers do not create new Bitcoin.
  • Controlling Bitcoin: A wallet does not contain physical coins. It manages keys that can authorize spending unspent transaction outputs recorded on the blockchain.

The protocol’s current issuance schedule is designed to limit supply to approximately 21 million BTC. That is a limit under Bitcoin’s current rules, not a claim that all those coins are already in circulation. A different network created by a rule-changing fork could have different rules; it would not change the rules followed by the unchanged Bitcoin chain. Bitcoin.org’s FAQ describes the issuance schedule and supply design.

How mining generates new Bitcoin

Mining does not mean decrypting Bitcoin or finding coins hidden in a computer. It is a competitive search for a valid proof of work. The process orders transactions, makes it costly to rewrite blockchain history, and releases new BTC according to a predictable schedule.

  1. A transaction is broadcast. A user signs a transaction and sends it to the network.
  2. Nodes check it. Nodes independently check whether it follows the rules and whether its inputs can be spent. Valid transactions not yet included in a block may be held in a node’s mempool.
  3. A miner assembles a candidate block. A miner or pool chooses transactions, then constructs a block with a special first transaction called the coinbase transaction. Despite the name, it is unrelated to the Coinbase exchange.
  4. The block is represented by a header. The transactions are summarized in a Merkle root. The 80-byte block header also contains a version, the previous block’s hash, a timestamp, the target encoded in nBits, and a nonce.
  5. ASICs search for a valid hash. Mining machines repeatedly hash variations of the header. They alter the nonce and, when needed, other data such as coinbase-related data that changes the Merkle root.
  6. A miner broadcasts a candidate. If a hash is numerically below the network’s current target, the miner can broadcast the block as a valid proof-of-work candidate.
  7. Nodes verify the block independently. They check proof of work, the previous-block reference, transactions, spending rules, the Merkle root, and whether the coinbase claims no more than the permitted subsidy and fees, among other consensus rules.
  8. The accepted chain extends. Nodes follow valid chains according to Bitcoin’s chain-selection rules, which favor the valid chain with the greatest cumulative proof of work. A competing block can temporarily create a fork, and a block later left behind in a reorganization does not retain the lasting reward.

The coinbase transaction can claim the block subsidy plus the fees from included transactions. The Bitcoin Developer Guide explains block structure, the coinbase transaction, proof of work, and how transaction fees arise when inputs exceed outputs.

Proof of work: a search, not a puzzle solution

Each hash attempt produces an unpredictable result. A miner succeeds when the resulting hash is below the network’s target. People often describe this as looking for “leading zeroes,” but that is only a visual shorthand for a number being small enough; the protocol does not seek a particular word or a fixed string of visible zeroes.

There is no scheduled winner or central operator. Anyone can attempt to mine, and a miner’s chance of finding a block depends on its share of the total network hash rate. Generating a valid proof requires repeated attempts, while checking a proposed result is comparatively quick. That imbalance makes proof of work a costly way to propose blocks that other nodes can verify.

A valid hash alone does not guarantee a lasting reward. The block must also obey consensus rules and become part of the accepted chain. If two miners find blocks close together, nodes may initially see different valid branches; subsequent proof of work resolves which branch is extended.

How much Bitcoin does a miner receive?

As of August 18, 2026, the subsidy is 3.125 BTC per accepted block. A block’s total reward can be greater because it also includes transaction fees. The network targets an average interval of about 10 minutes, but blocks do not arrive on a fixed schedule. The SEC filing cited here reports the current subsidy and approximate interval; the filing does not mean that an individual miner receives BTC every ten minutes.

When inputs to a transaction exceed its outputs, the difference is a fee that the miner including the transaction may claim. Fees are not newly issued BTC. The subsidy is new issuance; both can be claimed through the block’s coinbase transaction.

Halvings reduce the subsidy

The subsidy is cut in half every 210,000 blocks. Because blocks are not produced at perfectly regular intervals, future calendar dates are estimates rather than guarantees.

Issuance phase Block subsidy
Bitcoin launch in 2009 50 BTC
After first halving 25 BTC
After second halving 12.5 BTC
After third halving 6.25 BTC
After April 20, 2024 halving 3.125 BTC
After the next halving 1.5625 BTC; expected around mid-2028, subject to block production

The SEC filing covering Bitcoin’s historical subsidy schedule provides context for the halving progression and expected timing.

Why Bitcoin mining difficulty changes

About every 2,016 blocks, Bitcoin adjusts mining difficulty to keep the long-run average block interval near 10 minutes. If total mining power rises, difficulty increases; if significant hash rate leaves, it can fall at a later adjustment. The Bitcoin FAQ describes this automatic adjustment.

As a result, a faster machine does not guarantee a fixed amount of BTC per day. Its share of total network hash rate matters, and increased competition can offset hardware improvements. Any machine-level BTC estimate is a forecast based on conditions such as difficulty, fees, price, and uptime—not a production promise.

What equipment is used to mine Bitcoin?

Modern Bitcoin mining is dominated by application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) designed for SHA-256 hashing. Ordinary laptops, CPUs, and GPUs are not economically competitive for Bitcoin mining at modern difficulty levels.

  • Hashrate: Number of hash attempts per second, often given in terahashes per second (TH/s).
  • Power draw: Electricity consumed, measured in watts. A miner runs continuously when operating.
  • Efficiency: Often stated in joules per terahash (J/TH); lower means less energy for a given amount of hashing.
  • Cooling and electrical needs: Air-cooled units produce substantial heat and noise. Hydro or immersion setups add pumps, heat exchangers, plumbing, fluid, and maintenance.

Manufacturer and marketplace pages can help compare specifications, but listed prices are time-sensitive and are not complete installed costs. For example, Bitmain’s product page showed an S21 XP Hydro at 473 TH/s, 5,676 W, 12 J/TH, and a displayed price of $10,170 when accessed for this article. Bitmain’s product listings may change, and that figure does not establish availability or include every shipping, tax, electrical, or cooling cost.

Electrical requirements can rule out a home installation. Bitmain’s certification material for that hydro model specifies 380–415 VAC, three-phase plus protective earth, at 50–60 Hz. The model’s certification document illustrates why a high-load ASIC may not suit a standard household outlet. Check the exact model’s requirements and consult a qualified electrician; do not improvise wiring or bypass electrical protection.

Solo mining and pool mining

A pool coordinates work from many miners. It gives participating machines work and tracks partial proofs called shares. Shares show that a miner contributed hashing effort for payout accounting; they do not necessarily meet Bitcoin’s network target. A pool’s target is typically easier than the network’s, and only a network-valid block is broadcast as a Bitcoin block. The Bitcoin developer guide on pool mining explains shares and how pools estimate contributions.

Approach How payouts work Main trade-off
Solo mining If you find an accepted block, you can claim its permitted subsidy and fees. Potentially large, infrequent payout; long stretches without a reward are normal, especially for a small share of network hash rate.
Pool mining The pool distributes proceeds according to its payout method and terms. Typically smaller, more regular payouts, but pool fees and dependence on the pool’s operations and rules.

A pool participant normally receives an accounting-based share of pool revenue, not the whole block reward. The coinbase output itself cannot be spent immediately: it has a 100-block maturity period. The pool may then allocate its proceeds to participants under its own payout terms, which can include separate thresholds and timing.

Can you mine Bitcoin at home?

It is technically possible, but whether it makes financial sense depends on local electricity costs, equipment and infrastructure, market conditions, and operating expenses. A multi-kilowatt ASIC is a continuous industrial load, not a low-power computer. Before buying, check electricity tariffs and demand charges, circuit capacity and voltage, ventilation, noise, heat management, internet reliability, repair options, and any landlord, utility, fire-safety, or local restrictions that apply.

Estimate electricity before revenue

Use this formula for electricity consumed by the miner itself:

Daily electricity cost = (power in watts ÷ 1,000) × 24 × electricity price per kWh

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A 3,645 W machine running continuously uses about 87.48 kWh per day. At $0.10 per kWh, that is about $8.75 per day for electricity; at $0.20 per kWh, it is about $17.50. Those calculations use the S21 XP specification listed by Braiins’ marketplace; they are electricity costs only, not profit estimates. Cooling and other facility loads may add consumption.

A fuller estimate has to account for:

Net mining result = BTC revenue − electricity − pool fees − hosting − cooling − repairs − internet and facility costs − hardware depreciation − financing and taxes

Revenue depends on BTC price and its measurement date, network difficulty or hash rate, machine performance, fees, pool payout method, electricity location and tariff, and uptime. Without those assumptions, a daily BTC or profit figure would be misleading. A mining-cost guide such as Braiins’ cost-to-mine guide can help organize assumptions, but calculator output is not a guaranteed return.

Mine, buy, or use a service?

Option Potential advantage Important drawback
Buy BTC Straightforward way to acquire BTC without operating equipment. No participation in mining; exposure to Bitcoin’s market-price risk remains.
Mine at home Hands-on participation; may suit someone with suitable infrastructure and low-cost or otherwise stranded energy. Capital, electricity, heat, noise, maintenance, and uncertain economics.
Hosted mining Can avoid installing high-load equipment at home. Adds hosting fees, contract and termination risk, service interruption, shipping and repair questions, and possible custody or machine-identification concerns.
Cloud mining Low apparent setup burden. Opaque economics, counterparty exposure, limited control, and substantial scam risk.

Anyone evaluating hosting or cloud-mining terms should check whether a specific machine is identifiable, all electricity and pass-through charges, uptime remedies, pool account ownership, payout custody, repair and replacement terms, withdrawal rules, and the provider’s verifiable operating history. Claims of guaranteed daily Bitcoin, risk-free cloud mining, or fixed returns are warning signs. Legal and tax treatment depends on jurisdiction and should not be assumed from a general mining explanation.

What happens when the subsidy runs out?

Mining does not stop when the issuance schedule reaches its limit. Miners can continue processing transactions and providing proof of work, with transaction fees as their compensation rather than a newly issued subsidy. The exact calendar date of the final issuance is not a simple fixed prediction: the schedule follows block height and repeated halvings. Bitcoin.org’s FAQ explains that mining remains necessary after the final bitcoin is issued.
