How Hulk Hogan Undercut Jesse Ventura’s 1986 Wrestling Union Effort

Jesse Ventura’s proposed 1986 wrestler-organizing effort never became a union. Ventura and Hulk Hogan later described how McMahon learned of the plan, while other accounts point to fear of retaliation and uncertain locker-room support.

Hulk Hogan’s disclosure to Vince McMahon alerted WWF management to Jesse Ventura’s proposed wrestler-organizing effort before WrestleMania 2, according to accounts by Ventura and Hogan. But the evidence does not show that Hogan alone doomed a formal union: the proposal never became one, and reported management pressure, fear of retaliation and uncertain locker-room support also mattered.

What Jesse Ventura proposed before WrestleMania 2

Ventura recalled making his appeal in the dressing room before WrestleMania 2 in 1986, waiting until agents were gone. His idea was to coordinate WWF performers with wrestlers from rival Jim Crockett Promotions and use the event’s already-publicized card as leverage: wrestlers could refuse to perform until union negotiators were allowed in.

In a 2016 interview transcribed by Wrestling Inc., Ventura described the proposal this way: “if we go together and simply tell the media we are not wrestling unless union negotiators by federal law come in and give us the opportunity to unionize.” The 2023 NYU Journal of Intellectual Property & Entertainment Law likewise summarizes the plan as a collective refusal to wrestle. These were organizing talks and a proposed tactic, not a recorded union vote, established bargaining unit or completed organization.

Ventura said the stakes included health care, retirement and labor protections. He also questioned why wrestlers were classified as “independent contractors” if they could not freely work for another promotion. Those concerns reflect his account of why he wanted collective action; they do not establish the legal status of every performer or the terms of each wrestler’s contract.

How McMahon reportedly found out

Ventura said that McMahon called him the following night, threatened to fire him if he raised unionization again and “read him the riot act.” Ventura recalled working WrestleMania 2, then leaving for the film Predator and joining the Screen Actors Guild. These are Ventura’s recollections, not independently confirmed company records.

Years later, while suing McMahon over announcer royalties, Ventura said he asked his lawyer to learn who had alerted management. He recalled that McMahon named him during a deposition when asked whether anyone had tried to form a wrestling union. Asked how he knew, McMahon reportedly said Hogan had told him. The deposition exchange is known here through Ventura’s account, not an independently inspected transcript.

Hogan later described the disclosure in the Netflix documentary Mr. McMahon, according to an October 2024 report by Fightful. Fightful quoted Hogan saying: “I was on Vince McMahon’s team all the way. I went straight to Vince and said, ‘Hey, Jesse’s stirring shit up, man. He’s trying to start a union here and you’re going to have a bunch of wrestlers walk out on you at Madison Square Garden. Just want to let you know what’s up,’” Hogan’s account supports the central point that he informed McMahon; it does not, by itself, establish that the disclosure was the sole reason the effort failed.

Why the effort did not become a union

Management learned about the proposal

If Hogan’s account is accurate, his warning gave McMahon advance notice of the proposed walkout. Ventura recalled a direct threat after McMahon confronted him. Fightful also reported McMahon’s description of the effort as a sham and quoted him saying: “The whole thing was a sham. It’s something he pulled out of the air. Mostly like, ‘We should get together.’ Quite frankly, no one in the locker room would get behind Jesse.” That is McMahon’s reported view, not an independently verified count of wrestler support.

Fear of retaliation and uneven support

The NYU law review says wrestlers backed away because of management pressure or fear of retaliation, drawing on earlier labor scholarship. It also reports that WWF fired a less prominent pro-union wrestler, but the available accounts do not establish the firing’s timing or prove that it resulted from this specific effort. Fightful separately relayed Tony Atlas’s recollection that McMahon warned wrestlers individually that anyone attending a meeting would lose their job. These accounts are not reconciled, so they should not be treated as a single verified sequence.

Different financial incentives

Former wrestler Jim Brunzell, interviewed by Portside in 2022, recalled discussing unionization with Ventura and speaking with Hogan. Brunzell said Hogan indicated he would not support a union because it could hurt him. Brunzell also linked the effort to concerns about pay transparency, performers’ bodies and retirement. These are Brunzell’s later recollections, not documentation of every wrestler’s motivation.

Brunzell estimated that Hogan could earn “upward of $50,000 per week” and that he and others earned “about $5,000 per week.” Those are retrospective estimates reported by Portside, not audited payroll figures or a verified pay scale for the locker room. They offer context for the incentives Brunzell perceived, but cannot establish what each wrestler earned or why each chose not to organize.

What the accounts establish—and what they do not

  • Ventura’s proposal: He said he sought coordinated action before WrestleMania 2 in 1986, including possible cooperation with Jim Crockett Promotions wrestlers.
  • The disclosure: Ventura attributed his knowledge of Hogan’s role to McMahon’s deposition; Hogan later reportedly said he went directly to McMahon.
  • The outcome: The plan did not produce a union. Accounts describe management pressure, fear of retaliation and disputed levels of support.
  • The limits: The cited accounts do not establish a formal union campaign, a contemporaneous vote, a complete meeting roster or a sole cause for the effort’s failure.

Ventura’s 1999 memoir, I Ain’t Got Time to Bleed, is cited for the episode by the NYU law review and is useful as Ventura’s own account, not independent corroboration. Fightful’s report identifies Mr. McMahon as a source for Hogan’s later account; viewing availability can vary.
