How H&M Became a Global Fast-Fashion Retailer

H&M grew from a single Swedish womenswear shop into a global fashion business by combining accessible prices with a widening product range, international expansion and a growing mix of stores and online sales. H&M Group reported net sales of SEK 228,285 million for its financial year ending 30 November 2025, and its market overview listed H&M stores in 82 markets and e-commerce in 62 as of 31 August 2026. Those figures show scale, but do not establish a precise ranking among the world’s fast-fashion brands.

How did H&M get started?

Erling Persson opened Hennes, a womenswear store, in Västerås, Sweden, in 1947 after a trip to New York inspired him to pursue fashion retail. The business opened a Stockholm store in 1952. In 1968, it became Hennes & Mauritz and expanded into men’s and children’s clothing. That change broadened the business beyond its original customer and helped establish the wider apparel-retail proposition it would develop over time. H&M Group’s history documents these milestones.

What helped H&M appeal to a broad range of shoppers?

Accessible fashion as the central promise

The company describes its business idea as offering “fashion and quality at the best price in a sustainable way.” In practical terms, that is a promise to make current-looking clothing available at prices intended to reach a broad market. H&M’s popularity can be understood in part through this combination of price, design and quality: it positioned fashion as an everyday purchase rather than an occasional luxury. This is the company’s stated strategy, not independent proof that every product meets a particular quality or sustainability standard. H&M Group’s business overview explains the stated business idea.

A wider product and brand offer

H&M’s early move from womenswear into men’s and children’s clothing widened the potential customer base. The business later developed into H&M Group, whose portfolio includes H&M alongside other brands and ventures. The group describes its evolution as growth from one store into a family of brands serving customers worldwide. Group-wide sales and employee figures therefore describe the broader company, not H&M brand sales alone. H&M Group’s company overview describes its portfolio.

How did H&M expand beyond Sweden?

H&M built its reach through international retail expansion and, later, digital commerce. Its company history records milestones in international growth, marketing and the development of online channels. As of 31 August 2026, the group’s market overview listed H&M stores in 82 markets and H&M e-commerce in 62. These are H&M brand market-presence figures, not a store count, and the two channel totals are not interchangeable. Market availability can change over time. The group’s market overview provides the dated figures.

How does H&M’s retail model work?

Stores and online channels

H&M Group describes its approach as omnichannel: physical stores and digital channels are intended to complement one another. Stores provide a place to browse and buy in person, while e-commerce extends access to markets where the company operates online. The company’s stated approach is to have the channels reinforce each other; the market counts above show their reach, not how much revenue each channel contributes.

Independent suppliers rather than owned factories

H&M Group says it does not own the factories where its products are made. Instead, it works with independent suppliers in a multi-tier supply chain: direct supplier relationships are at the garment manufacturing or processing level, with additional suppliers further upstream. This sourcing structure is important to understanding how a global apparel retailer obtains products, but outsourcing by itself does not establish production speed, working conditions or labor outcomes. H&M Group’s supply-chain information describes the model.

Design, purchasing and supply-chain decisions

In its reporting, the company says it has worked to streamline design and purchasing, shorten decision paths, improve trend analysis and speed up its supply chain. These are H&M Group’s descriptions of its operating approach; the available figures do not independently demonstrate that any one change caused the company’s historical growth or popularity. The group’s annual and sustainability reporting discusses its approach.

What do H&M Group’s latest reported figures show?

H&M Group’s financial year runs from 1 December to 30 November. Its FY2025 results cover 1 December 2024 through 30 November 2025 and report group-wide performance, not H&M brand-only sales.

Measure H&M Group FY2025 figure What it means
Net sales SEK 228,285 million Full-year group net sales; up 2% in local currencies year over year.
Gross margin 53.4% Full-year gross margin, not the operating margin.
Fourth-quarter operating margin 10.7% A quarterly measure for the fourth quarter, separate from the full-year gross margin.

These are company-reported results. Net sales indicate the scale of the group’s business, while gross margin is the share of sales remaining after cost of goods sold; neither figure alone establishes a ranking against competitors. H&M Group’s FY2025 report contains the financial results.

How should H&M’s sustainability figures be read?

H&M Group reported that, in 2025, 80% of materials in its commercial products were recycled or sustainably sourced, including 32% recycled materials. It also reported a 1% reduction in scope 3 greenhouse-gas emissions against a 2019 baseline, measured according to the company’s science-based target. These are company-reported measures with defined scopes; they do not establish that the entire business or all of its products are sustainable. CEO Daniel Ervér said the company was “strengthening our offering and showing that growth, profitability and reduced emissions can go hand in hand.” The FY2025 Annual and Sustainability Report gives the measures and management’s account.

Can H&M be called one of the world’s largest fast-fashion brands?

H&M is clearly a large global fashion retailer: its group reported FY2025 net sales of SEK 228,285 million, while the H&M brand was listed in 82 store markets and 62 e-commerce markets as of 31 August 2026. But those facts do not establish an exact position among fast-fashion brands. A defensible ranking would require comparable competitor figures using the same measures and reporting periods, and the sales figure here is for H&M Group, not the H&M brand alone. “Fast fashion” is also the framing of this topic; the cited company materials do not provide an independent classification of H&M under a formal definition.
