A hardware wallet keeps the private keys used to authorize crypto transactions on a separate device, reducing the chance that ordinary malware on a connected computer can steal those keys. It does not make transactions automatically safe: a user can still expose a recovery phrase, approve a deceptive request, confirm a substituted address, or lose access through physical, firmware, or supply-chain risks.
What a hardware wallet actually protects
Crypto assets are recorded on their blockchains; a hardware wallet holds or uses the private keys that authorize transactions. A computer or phone may prepare a transaction and send relevant data to the device, where the signature is produced. The connected host should not receive the private key itself. That separation reduces one important risk, but it does not establish that the transaction presented to the device is honest or matches what you intended.

Ledger describes its threat model as assuming the host may be compromised. Its documentation also says physical user approval is required, so host malware cannot silently use the device as a signing oracle. Those are vendor descriptions of its own design, not guarantees that every hardware wallet works identically. Ledger further describes deriving a key for an operation, using it, and erasing it to limit exposure time; this, too, is an implementation claim specific to its explanation. Ledger’s technical documentation
Protection against direct key theft is not transaction protection
If malware infects the computer, key isolation can make it harder for the malware to copy the signing secret directly. But the computer can still send misleading transaction data to the device. The device can produce a valid signature for an action you approve, even if that action is harmful.

What a hardware wallet cannot protect against
Recovery phrase theft or loss
A recovery phrase is a backup that can restore access on another compatible wallet. Someone who obtains it may be able to access the funds without the original device. Generate it through the device’s official setup flow, and do not use a device that arrives with a phrase already configured. Keep the phrase private and offline: do not photograph it, send it by chat or email, store it online, or type it into a website, computer, or phone. Protect it from damage and loss as well as disclosure. Trezor’s seed phrase security guidance
Deceptive requests and misunderstood approvals
Signing is an authorization, not a guarantee that an action is safe. Ledger’s developer documentation, updated September 23, 2026, warns: “An attacker who controls the host can present a hash of a transaction the user did not intend to authorise.” If you approve a request without understanding it, the device may sign a harmful transaction. Blind signing and limited displays
The computer or phone display can be tampered with, so review the details on the hardware wallet’s own display before approving. For a transfer, check the destination and amount. For a smart-contract action, understand the permission or operation being signed. A device display is a meaningful safeguard, not proof that every complex contract action is easy to interpret. If the device does not clearly show what you are authorizing, do not assume blind approval is safe. Ledger guidance on clear signing

Malware can replace a copied destination address with a similar-looking address. A 2021 paper introducing EthClipper tested this attack against Trezor, Ledger, and KeepKey devices. The device may show the substituted destination for confirmation, but that defense fails if you check only a few characters or approve without verifying the destination. This is a demonstrated attack method, not evidence of how often it occurs in practice. The EthClipper paper

In the paper’s specific attack setup, its authors estimated that an attacker using off-the-shelf PCs and NAS storage could mine a database matching 25% of address digits to obtain a 50% chance of finding a fitting fake address. This result is limited to that setup; it is not a general wallet-compromise rate.
Physical, firmware, and supply-chain risks
A device can be lost, stolen, tampered with, or affected by hardware or firmware vulnerabilities. Trezor lists vulnerability categories including seed extraction or injection, PIN bypass, bypassing user confirmation, private-key extraction, and physical or supply-chain attacks. A category’s inclusion does not mean every model is affected. Check current advisories for the specific device you use. Trezor’s security page

Phishing and social engineering
An attacker may trick you into revealing your recovery phrase or approving a malicious operation. A wallet cannot distinguish an informed choice from one made under deception. Treat unexpected requests for a phrase or an approval as a warning sign; no hardware device can make disclosure safe. Trezor’s seed phrase security guidance
How to use a hardware wallet more safely
- Set it up yourself. Use the device maker’s official setup flow to generate the recovery phrase. Do not use a device that arrives preconfigured with one. Trezor’s seed phrase security guidance
- Keep the recovery phrase offline and private. Do not photograph it, send it through chat or email, store it in a cloud drive, or enter it on a computer, phone, or website. Any additional copy remains a credential that needs protection. Trezor’s seed phrase security guidance
- Review the request on the device. Check transfer details on the trusted display and understand the permissions or action for contract interactions. If the display does not make the request clear, stop rather than approving blindly. Ledger guidance on clear signing
- Verify the destination, not just the computer screen. Treat the connected wallet interface, website, and clipboard as potentially hostile. Check the address shown on the device against the intended recipient before confirming. The EthClipper paper
- Secure the device and backup. Protect both against unauthorized access, theft, damage, and loss. A more durable backup format may reduce physical-damage risk, but it does not reduce the need to keep the phrase secret. Trezor’s seed phrase security guidance
- Keep software current using verified instructions. Follow update guidance through the device maker’s official channel. Trezor identifies firmware updates as part of device security guidance. Trezor’s security page
What the security evidence does—and does not—show
Hardware wallets address a specific weakness: exposure of signing keys to a general-purpose connected device. They do not eliminate risks created by the recovery backup, misleading transaction data, physical access, or flaws in a particular device. Vendor descriptions explain their own design; they should not be treated as universal proof for every wallet. The cited 2021 EthClipper study demonstrates an address-substitution mechanism, but does not establish its current real-world frequency. The available evidence does not provide a general percentage of crypto losses prevented by hardware wallets or a rate of hardware-wallet attacks.
