How Hannah Montana Cast Pay Compared With the Franchise’s Success

Miley Cyrus later said she was probably the least-paid cast member, but no salary figures or cast-pay ranking are public in the cited reporting. The franchise had substantial reported sales and viewing, yet those numbers do not establish its profits or how much performers earned.

Miley Cyrus later recalled that she was “probably the least paid person” on the Hannah Montana cast because she “didn’t know any better.” But the available reporting does not say what she or her castmates were paid, and it does not support a salary-versus-profit calculation. What it does show is a striking contrast between Cyrus’s recollection and the franchise’s substantial reported commercial reach.

What Miley Cyrus said about her pay

In an interview with Elle, Cyrus said: “I mean, at one point—they’ll probably kill me for saying it—I was probably the least paid person on my [Hannah Montana] cast because I didn’t know any better.” TIME reported the comment on September 28, 2016, preserving the qualifier “probably.”

That is a recollection, not a disclosed salary record. Cyrus gave no amount, contract details, or comparison with named castmates. It is fair to say she remembered being paid relatively little; it is not possible from this account to rank the cast’s compensation or establish that every performer was underpaid.

How large was the Hannah Montana franchise?

By 2009, the franchise’s reported scale extended well beyond television episodes. TIME reported that Disney said the franchise had sold more than 8 million CDs, generated $225 million in movie-ticket sales, and sold 15 million books. TIME also reported Disney’s broad assessment that Cyrus was worth billions of dollars to the company.

#1 Best Overall

These are different kinds of measures, not a single audited profit figure: CDs and books are sales counts, while the $225 million figure is ticket sales. The “worth billions” description is Disney’s assessment as reported by TIME; the article does not provide a calculation that would make it equivalent to revenue or net profit from the show alone.

Disney’s business model was cross-promotion

The commercial story was a company-wide strategy that linked television exposure with recording deals, radio play, soundtracks, concerts, and merchandise. Gary Marsh, then president of entertainment for Disney Channels Worldwide, described television as a starting point: “For many people, TV is an endgame. For us, TV has simply become a launchpad to opportunities elsewhere in the company.”

That helps explain why franchise success cannot be measured by episode revenue alone. It also does not reveal what percentage, if any, of those businesses’ proceeds went to individual performers.

Why Cyrus’s reported annual earnings do not answer the salary question

In June 2009, CBS News reported that Cyrus made $18 million in the prior year and described Hannah Montana: The Best of Both Worlds Concert as the biggest concert film at that time. The $18 million figure concerns her reported annual earnings, not a disclosed salary for the television series. It cannot be used to infer her show pay or the compensation of the rest of the cast.

What later audience figures add—and what they do not

The franchise continued to attract viewers decades later. In a March 27, 2026 announcement, The Walt Disney Company said the 20th Anniversary Special had drawn 6.3 million views across Disney+ and Hulu after three days. Disney also reported that catalog viewing rose nearly 1,000% that week and that fans had streamed more than half a billion hours globally on Disney+ to date.

Those are company-reported viewing measures with distinct timeframes: the special’s three-day total, a week’s change in catalog viewing, and cumulative Disney+ viewing to date. They demonstrate continuing interest, not the original show’s earnings, cast compensation, or the franchise’s net profit. Disney said its collection included all four seasons, the movie, and the concert film; availability may vary by location or change.

Why a salary-to-success comparison cannot be calculated

The available figures do not share a common basis. One is Cyrus’s qualified memory of her relative pay; another is a report of her annual earnings; the franchise figures include product sales, ticket sales, and viewership. None gives a complete cast payroll, contractual participation, or audited franchise profit.

So the defensible conclusion is narrower than the headline’s wording: Cyrus later remembered being probably the least-paid cast member, while the franchise reached substantial commercial scale. The sources do not establish how much the cast collectively made or prove that their pay was abysmal relative to profits.

What a residual check can—and cannot—show

In April 2026, actor and dancer Dana Vaughns described receiving a $66.40 residual check from Hannah Montana: The Movie, alongside smaller checks, as reported by Us Weekly. That is one performer’s account of a later residual payment. It is not evidence of original cast salaries, a typical residual amount, or the show’s compensation arrangements.
