This guide uses Australia for practical consumer steps, then explains the narrower Canadian and New Zealand comparisons. In Australia, a consumer-facing price generally has to show the minimum total payable, including GST and unavoidable or preselected charges. A refund is a separate question: consumer law or the seller’s policy determines whether you are entitled to money back, while the seller adjusts its GST reporting when a taxable sale is cancelled or reduced.
What GST is doing to a consumer price
Goods and services tax is charged on taxable supplies. Depending on the jurisdiction and selling context, a merchant may build the tax into the advertised total or show a tax-exclusive amount and add GST later. That difference explains why two receipts can display tax differently even when the final amount paid is similar.

GST is not a universal rate or a universal price-display rule. Supplies can be exempt or treated differently, and business-only quotations may follow rules that do not apply to household shoppers. Always identify the country before interpreting a GST line.
Australia: the displayed consumer total
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) says businesses selling to consumers must display the total price as a single figure. The minimum amount shown must include taxes, duties and unavoidable fees. It must also include a charge that is optional in theory but automatically selected and payable unless the shopper removes it.
#1 Best Overall
- Two-Part Carbonless Invoice Book: Each invoice book has 50 sets of invoices, each with a white/light yellow section, with the yellow section retained in the invoice book to maintain detailed records.
- Consecutively Numbered: Enlarged red 6-digit numbers in the upper right corner of each invoice receipt book help you quickly navigate through your orders.
- Wraparound Divider Flap: A thick folded cardboard divider is integrated into the back of each invoice book for use between each two-part sales order to prevent the written content from rubbing off on subsequent copies of the invoice, resulting in wasted invoices.
- 2 Packs/50 Sets (100 Sets Total): Each invoice book provides 50 sequentially numbered carbonless sets of 2 invoice books for long-term use.
- Customizable Space: Each invoice book for small business has space at the top to add a company seal or sticker.
- An unavoidable booking fee must be included in the displayed total.
- A preselected add-on that remains charged unless you untick it belongs in the total.
- If a business shows a partial price as well, that partial figure must not be more prominent than the total.
- A price displayed only to other businesses does not have to include GST under the ACCC’s consumer price-display guidance.
These rules answer “Is GST included in the price?” for an ordinary Australian consumer listing: the required consumer-facing total should already include it. Check the final checkout screen for the total and for any optional item you actively chose.
New Zealand: a rate-specific example
Inland Revenue New Zealand states that most things consumers buy have GST added and lists the current GST rate as 15%. That rate is specific to New Zealand, not a global standard. Inland Revenue also lists exceptions such as rent on a consumer’s home, overseas airfares and mortgage payments.
For a taxable New Zealand purchase with a GST-inclusive total, the GST component can be isolated mathematically as total price × 15 ÷ 115. For example, a NZ$115 GST-inclusive total contains NZ$15 GST and NZ$100 before GST. Use that calculation only where the supply is taxable and the 15% rate applies; an exempt or specially treated supply will not fit the example.

Why GST appears on a receipt
A GST line tells you how the seller has allocated the transaction for tax records. It does not mean you have filed a personal claim with the tax authority. The line may show GST included in a total, GST separately, or a rate and amount, depending on the country, seller and document type.
Australian consumer receipts
Under ACCC consumer guidance, an Australian business must provide a receipt for a purchase over A$75. It must also provide one for a lower-value purchase when the consumer asks. A receipt may be a GST tax invoice, cash-register docket, handwritten document or digital receipt.

- QUALITY INVOICES: Adams Order books provide a professional invoice or customer receipt; a great way to create and maintain a professional image for small businesses and service providers
- 50 TWO-PART CARBONLESS FORMS: Customers get the perforated white top copy; retain the canary and pink copies for your records
- WRAP-AROUND COVER: Fold the back cover between sets to keep invoices neat and legible
- ROOM FOR CUSTOMIZATION: A blank space at top leaves room for your company stamp; a big savings over custom-printed forms
- CONSECUTIVELY NUMBERED: Large 6-digit numbers in the upper right hand corner help you thumb through orders quickly
The basic receipt information identified by the ACCC includes:
- the business name and ABN or ACN;
- the product or service supplied;
- the date it was supplied; and
- the price.
If you paid less than A$75 and need proof for a warranty, return or expense record, ask at the time of purchase or promptly afterward. The A$75 threshold concerns the obligation to issue a receipt; it does not remove your consumer-law rights.
Itemised service bills
An Australian consumer can request an itemised bill for services. The request generally must be made within 30 days after receiving the original bill, and the business must provide the itemised bill within seven days. An itemisation is useful when a service invoice groups labour, materials, call-out charges or other components into one amount.
Receipt versus Australian tax invoice
A receipt proves payment or records a sale for a consumer. A tax invoice is a more specific GST document used to substantiate a taxable supply and, for a registered business customer, support an input-tax-credit claim. The documents can be combined, but the labels are not interchangeable in every situation.
Information expected on a tax invoice
Australian Taxation Office (ATO) guidance says a tax invoice needs enough information to identify the supplier and its ABN, describe the supply, show quantity where relevant, state the price and taxable-supply extent, give the issue date and show the GST amount. For a total price of at least A$1,000, the recipient’s identity or ABN is generally included.

A household shopper does not normally need to calculate or separately recover the GST shown on a receipt. Keep the document because it can establish what was bought, when and for how much if a remedy issue arises.

Ask these questions in order:
- Do consumer law or the seller’s policy require a refund? The answer depends on why you are returning the item and the country.
- What happens to GST after the price or supply changes? The seller handles the tax adjustment in its records; a registered business customer may have a related credit reversal.
When Australian consumer law may provide a remedy
ACCC guidance addresses remedies when goods or services have a problem, such as failing to meet a consumer guarantee. The available remedy can depend on the seriousness of the problem and the nature of the supply. A seller’s “change-of-mind” policy is separate: Australian consumer law does not automatically require a refund merely because a shopper no longer wants a sound product. Check the store’s stated policy before assuming a discretionary return is available.
Where a refund is required for a faulty product or service, the ACCC says a business must not reduce the refund to account for the consumer’s use. That rule concerns the consumer remedy. It is not a formula for subtracting GST from the amount you receive.
What the seller does with GST
The ATO treats a return and associated refund as capable of cancelling the taxable supply in whole or in part. That is an “adjustment event”: the supplier adjusts the GST previously reported for the portion returned. A repair or maintenance return does not necessarily cancel the original supply, so the GST treatment can differ.
The ATO’s recalled-goods example involves a GST-registered retailer refunding a GST-registered business customer. The retailer adjusts GST it reported, while the business customer reverses an input-tax credit it previously claimed. This is business tax administration, not a special GST application that an ordinary consumer files after a retail return.

Why a visible GST line is not a personal tax refund
Seeing GST on your receipt does not give you a general right to apply directly to the tax authority for that amount. If the seller accepts a qualifying return, the seller refunds or credits the transaction under the applicable consumer law or policy and makes any required GST adjustment. If the seller lawfully refuses a change-of-mind return, there is no separate consumer GST claim that bypasses that decision.
How to handle a return in practice
- Identify the reason. Record whether the item is faulty, unsafe, incorrectly described, missing a component or simply unwanted. The reason affects your legal remedy.
- Check the seller’s process. Look for time limits, proof-of-purchase requirements and whether the seller offers exchange, repair, replacement or refund for change of mind.
- Keep evidence. Save the receipt or digital order record, photos of a defect, delivery records and messages with the seller.
- Request the remedy clearly. State the problem, purchase date, amount paid and outcome sought. For a service, request an itemised bill if the original charge is unclear.
- Check the refund amount. A qualifying refund should address the amount paid under the applicable remedy. The seller’s GST adjustment is reflected in its accounting; you do not add a second GST claim.
- Escalate with the right issue. If the dispute is about a failed consumer guarantee or misleading price, raise it with the relevant consumer-protection body. If it is only a voluntary change-of-mind return, the published store policy is usually decisive.
Canada: similar tax adjustment, different terminology and scope
Canada’s GST/HST rules cannot be substituted for Australia’s. Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) guidance says a seller may adjust, refund or credit the GST/HST originally charged on returned goods. A Canadian seller may tell customers that tax is included in the total, separately state the amount, or show the applicable tax rate.
The CRA material also describes a four-year period for making the described tax adjustment after reducing the purchase price. That is a tax-administration period for the seller’s adjustment; it is not a four-year consumer deadline for deciding whether a return is allowed. Consumer return rights still depend on the reason for return, provincial or territorial law and the seller’s policy.
New Zealand: taxable supply information since 1 April 2023
New Zealand changed its record-keeping terminology on 1 April 2023. The former “tax invoice” requirement was replaced by taxable supply information, and “credit/debit note” terminology was replaced by supply correction information. Inland Revenue says the change concerns invoicing and record keeping: the definition of taxable supplies and the way GST is calculated did not change.
For a New Zealand consumer, the practical lesson is that a record may not be titled “tax invoice” even though it contains the information needed to document the taxable supply and any correction. The 15% rate and the listed exemptions remain specific to New Zealand guidance.

Reading common GST situations
The advertised total is higher at checkout
In Australia, compare the advertised consumer total with the checkout total and look for an automatically selected fee or add-on. An unavoidable or preselected charge should have been included in the displayed minimum total. A genuinely optional extra that you actively choose can increase the final amount.
The receipt has no GST line
A missing separate GST line does not by itself prove that GST was omitted. The document may show a GST-inclusive total, cover a non-taxable or exempt supply, or be a basic receipt rather than a detailed tax invoice. Ask the seller for clarification or an appropriate tax invoice when you need one for business records.
The seller refunds less after you used the product
For an Australian remedy covered by consumer guarantees, the ACCC says the business must not reduce the refund to account for your use. Ask the seller to identify the legal or policy basis for any deduction. A discretionary change-of-mind return can have different conditions, so distinguish that case from a faulty-goods remedy.
A business bought the item
A GST-registered business should retain the required tax-invoice information and account for any input-tax credit according to its circumstances. If goods are returned and a credit was previously claimed, the business may need to reverse that credit when the supplier adjusts the GST. Those obligations do not apply simply because an individual consumer sees GST printed on a receipt.
Country-by-country questions to ask
Before relying on a GST explanation from another country, verify five points:
- Must a consumer-facing price include GST, or may tax be added separately?
- Which goods and services are taxable, zero-rated or exempt?
- When must a receipt or tax-invoice record be issued, and what threshold applies?
- Does consumer law require a refund for this reason, or is it only a change-of-mind request?
- How must the seller document and report the tax adjustment after a return?
These questions prevent a Canadian tax-adjustment period, a New Zealand rate or an Australian receipt threshold from being presented as a worldwide rule.
